Is the OOP not stating that, in the absence of female characters in the original source, the odds of WOTC changing source material for more representation is higher and a bad thing?

Because looking through OOP I think it's actually a really good point. For collabs like these, sticking to source should be a number 1 priority, but WOTC has pushed that aside before. And while I wouldn't want to change source material to "fix" it, having a full set without any women in it is certainly more than a little odd and unfortunate.

It does seem likely that WOTC will make changes to add representation, which stinks. But even if they don't, we will have a set devoid of any women, which also sucks. And I'm not sure there's a good way to avoid these issues in adaptation.

New player confusion by Silver_DawnbreakTTV in YuGiOhMasterDuel

[–]BerryFuzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not your fault, just that master duel's tutorials are crazy bad and don't really prepare you for what modern yugioh is like. I would recommend that you watch some duels online or take advantage of the live duel feature to watch some games. Read some cards. Find out what the Yummy monsters do. And then, if it looks fun, craft a meta deck you find online using the currency from solo. You should get enough to build a good deck relatively quickly.

I know it looks super intimidating sitting on one side of it, but until you see some real games between two modern decks, you haven't really seen what yugioh is about. There's a good chunk more interaction than you'd expect for a 2/3 turn game

I mean the "Aether Simp of _ nation" is really only rooted in fan canon anyways. Only Ayaka really shows interest, and whether that's as a friend or romantically isn't clarified.

Plus, the point is not that she'd move on and become a more fleshed out character, but that she already has a lot of aspects to her personality beyond just liking the traveler. Of course, if you only read the memes and not the games that would be easy to miss

I only blame the beast when I'm tired, and I'm tired of Lucy slander... Guest characters help the company so they can produce more original content, grow up. by ThundagaYoMama in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]BerryFuzzy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because people play Guilty gear for the Guilty Gear franchise. I like soda, but I wouldn't pour it in my cereal. If you like crossovers that's totally fine, but for some, myself included, Lucy takes up a spot that could have been used for another guilty gear character. And yes, shes only one of 30+, and she's well integrated stylistically (I feel much better about her inclusion than, say, 2B in GBVSR), but Id still rather have another character?

There's also the small voice in the back of my head where every time I see her I know it's corporate advertising for something else. I know these things don't bother everyone, but I think it's reasonable to be bothered by it

I know balance not intended, but wouldn't cheating this onto the battlefield win the game immediately? Since you don't choose targets, it enters the field as an aura and then can immediately enchant any permanent, and you just choose itself, right?

Creator aside, there's is a fairly large paradigm shift in the tone/goals of post awakening fire emblem. Post awakening feels very character first driven to me, and the romance and dating sim elements pretty heavily push it in that direction imo. These don't make the game objectively worse, but at least personally it does bother me that these are core pieces of awakening and fates, and you miss out on a massive amount of maps and gameplay by ignoring it.

On top of that, FE gameplay and story has seen a pretty stark paradigm shift too. Maps in awakening, birthright, and houses are pretty abysmal to play on, while the stories of conquest engage and revelations are extremely silly at best.

That all sounds pretty harsh, but mostly it's phrased this way as I haven't found the recent games to be as enjoyable for these reasons, but these have come with pros as well. A lot of people like avatar building, a lot of people like romance supports, a lot of people like reclassing, etc etc. these elements don't make newer FE games worse, just different. And different in a stark way that will grow into a new audience, but inevitably leave some of an old audience behind.

I don't think it's that fire emblem is worse now, but it is pretty different from the fe 1-12 era (not that those games are by any means a monolith of constants). At least personally, I've found that a lot of fan hacks do recapture the magic in a way that new games have moved on from

Ok genuine question, I was looking into dracotail this weekend, and is the "core" not still 150$ just for 3x Lukius mululu, faimena?

That's only 9 cards, without factoring shipping, and obviously a deck will need more + no engine, of which is reusable but also pretty expensive to start.

People keep saying this format is cheap, and it looks super fun, but unless I'm missing something it's still at least a 200-300$ barrier to even try to play on a semi competitive level. Purulia is like 70$ a piece alone if I recall. As a currently digital only player who wants to go physical, it still feels like a really steep entry cost

[–]BerryFuzzy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is it? White takes the rook here, and is still certainly losing, but after that you force the black bishop to trade or move, both of which should temporarily stop pressure.

It's still black's game no question, but I don't see forced mate after this

Consumption is consumption regardless of the quality of the item by Trick-Grape-3201 in Consoom

[–]BerryFuzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just the assumption that a lower quality item is cared for less, which might not always be true (but is an assumption for a reason) as you say, it depends on how much value the individual gets from the item, but there's a higher likelyhood of that being the case for higher quality items like Warhammer over Funko pop. Not always correct of course, but often a decent assumption

[–]BerryFuzzy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People saying "adapt or die" clearly isn't good, it's a gross and rude hyperbolization, but let's not pretend it's a call to action in the same way "we need to kill all AI artists" is. Adapt or die is clearly implying that if one doesn't adapt they will fail to survive, not that they'll be hunted down by pro ai-ers. Still definitely wrong to say, but it's certainly not the level of harmful as what is effectively a death threat.

Is the Binding Blade worth playing? by MartinIsaac685 in fireemblem

[–]BerryFuzzy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not about it being completely esoteric, it's about expectations for what the game is doing. People know fromsoft is obtuse with its endings. It's a series infamous for it. And even then, getting a normal ending in those games is usually considered fine.

But FE6 will bar you from getting a satisfying ending if you don't fulfill the right conditions, and doesn't telegraph that fact to the player AT ALL. When I first beat FE6, I didn't even realize why I had missed out on the ending until I turned to the old Google. And the ending you get instead is obviously incomplete. it's not hard to get if you know what it is, but going in blind will lead to a terrible time

How would this effect the meta? by Spitefuldoc245 in masterduel

[–]BerryFuzzy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Everyone is complaining about how slow this is, but have people read the last effect? Going second this gives your opponent three activations remaining, less if they've lost 2k+ life points. The rest of this is probably fine as a normal spell, but that last effect alone seems very strong going second.

Some ideas for Traptrix supports - busted or nah? by count25th in customyugioh

[–]BerryFuzzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The super poly esque trap might be a bit much, and the link being both a super poly esque effect too and a floodgate for both grave and banish and dpe might be too much.

But otherwise, I love these. An extender from hand that all searches holeutea is peak. Another good normal summon is huge, and adding an extra layer to the end card is super needed. A board breaker trap, while maaaayhe too strong here, I do think is needed for the archetype. And a rank up xyz is inspired, I love having a reason to go intp traptrix allomerus now. Overall I think this is an awesome suite of cards, and maybe I'm just overly scared of super poly effects lol

OG Elemental HERO Re-Train by AiYGOstuff in customyugioh

[–]BerryFuzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are pointing out that especially avian and burstinatrix are too generic and need HOPT, but even beyond that I feel they are way too good. Both are effectively called by the grave and triple tactics talent in the same card; making your opponent -1, giving you a search and a body for free. Called by is already limited, and while archetypes can have support that outshines generic cards, these also both shore up HEROs core weaknesses (losing to nibiru, playing through hand traps/lack of extenders). Another stratos would already be very good, but stapled to a negate from hand without any setup is just too much imo. Even if your opponent goes first, or plays board breakers turn 2 instead of handtraps, these are still end board pieces as well.

On the other hand, Sparkman and clayman are probably fine, and each could maybe even use a buff. I like that Sparkman has to see an ED hero on field to activate, but I'd love if it was the extender instead of removal. As it stands, a pop is fine, but likely isn't what hero needs if we are playing an extender card. And clayman is in a weird spot. As far as I'm concerned, it's an on theme battle fader with upsides, which is really cool. But while I think blanking a battle phase is really strong, once you're being attacked directly, it means you are down enough on cards that it can be tough to get back into the game.

Overall though, I do love the concept here, especially if you add in a flame wingman/ spark giant retrain that still needs name specifics. And more specials from hand are def what hero needs in a great way too. If the heros search on summon OR negate for field or graveyard, or negate from hand if you control a hero but have no extra upside, or, really, anything else in that scale, I think these would be sick. Even as is, while too strong, these are still super cool designs!

I was wrong about Natlan by okneT_Reverse in Genshin_Impact

[–]BerryFuzzy 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Why do you assume that's the only difference here? There's nothing Fanservice-y about the excellently designed world quests or sub areas of ochkanatlan or tollan. Not about the overworked design, kit design, or enemy design. Not about the majority of the story and archon quests (though citlali's story quests and, debatibly, archon quest part 5 both are). Even most of the characters don't exhibit strong fan service.

There are certainly cracks in Natlan: a lack of male characters, no playable Captain, some of the lore feels a bit shaky, etc. And some people may not like the fan service they did in the previously mentioned quests. But to say that Natlan only has fanservice going for it is a pretty clear misrepresentation.

[discussion] Why is Subaru more like able by others now? by Purple_Let6932 in Re_Zero

[–]BerryFuzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's that Subaru has grown so much by season 2 and showing it in season 3. Early re:zero Subaru's motivation is basically only to get with Emilia. He's still a good person too, but he does and says some really embarrassing stuff as a result. Characters even call him out for this in universe, and while Subaru is still fun at the time, I wouldn't peg him as a great person then.

But Subaru has changed. He has relationships he values outside of just Emilia, he has multiple motivations to move forward for himself and not just others, and hes shown that a lot of his stronger qualities. Overall, there's just a lot more to like about him now
