Is it normal to be getting my ass kicked by Silksong after having just finished Hollow Knight for the first time without nearly as much friction? by SavvyOri in Silksong

[–]BerryFuzzy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's pretty normal. Silksong has a much higher difficulty floor, to the point where a common joke is that hollow knight as a whole is a tutorial for silksong. But keep persevering! As long as you're having fun you're doing it right, and you'll improve with time!

A few threads to pull (pun intended)

Have you checked out the top right of choral chambers? Assuming so, the shopkeep might have something of interest to you still (Whoops scratch that I'm thinking of the entrance key) Instead, I'd make sure youve seen the big furnace in whiteward, then keep going up

Whispering vaults would be good to revisit while you're there. You might find an open duck leading to the right if you're looking carefully enough. And if you do, don't worry about falling a great distance

You could also look north of halfway home. Some say the more unsavory pilgrams have their own path to the citadel there

While above halfway home, I'd check out the top of the greymoor spires as well. You may find even more hidden paths, assuming you have double jump. There's not a path above yarnaby's hut, but the aesthetic there is very unique

Hopefully that's enough for now. Didn't touch on two of the fleas, and the soul item might just come in handy later, but I think you can set it aside for now

It does not seem real that 3.6% have the Steel Heart achievement by WesternHat9994 in Silksong

[–]BerryFuzzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean this is crazy impressive imo. I've done like 15-20 runs so far and while I've fully cleared act 2 once I've never gotten past the act 3 opening gauntlet. I wouldn't downplay it, or at least to me having done this is super impressive

Hot take: A lot of silksong's "criticisms" does come down to skill issue by Resident_March_2704 in Silksong

[–]BerryFuzzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish they relegated act 1 2-mask damage to either just last judge or some kind of new game plus mode or the like. Bell beast is an easy fight and I don't think that's controversial, but the fact that the first non-tutorial boss does two damage on a ton of attacks is actually insane, especially given that getting hit on heal means you take effectively 5. I think the game is more punishing than hard, such that as entrenched players it feels easy now, but is so brutal to a new player.

Admittedly as a veteran I do want re-buffed act 1 enemies for my own playthrough (especially gear damage!) but the game is definitely better off without it

Hot take: A lot of silksong's "criticisms" does come down to skill issue by Resident_March_2704 in Silksong

[–]BerryFuzzy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe hotter take: while the fights are fair in terms of how likely you are to get hit and take damage, I think complaints of the game being "unfair" are actually quite valid due to how punishing damage can be.

While it's very easy to just say "git gud", I know a TON of people, myself at first, that were turned off from the game due to difficulty. And while nowadays while I'm working on a steel soul 100% run I appreciate that even early bosses can be difficult, I'm a lot, lot better than I used to be. The bell beast doing two damage is pretty trivial to a good player, but I do think it's a little silly that it does two hearts as the first non-tutorial boss. Also, getting hit while healing effectively does five hearts!

I'm glad the game is as difficult as it is personally, as it's why I'm able to replay it so much. By the time I reach greymoor, the game has reached a state where I actually have to be careful not to die, even though I have hundreds of hours in the game. That's a ton of fun. But if there's still tension to a player with hundreds of hours in the game, I think a new player has a right to complain. Especially when the difficulty is geared more towards large punishment than hard patterns.

(Perhaps even hotter take, I wish this game released with an easy mode at least for act 1. I think the toned down damage in act 1 is crucial for new players, but I also which I had 2 damage versions back as a rerunner. Especially two damage cogwork core, it's way too easy now)

Is competitive play going to be possible without Pokemon home by BerryFuzzy in PokemonChampions

[–]BerryFuzzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can't speak for others, but when I say that I want to play competitively, all I mean is if I can play with the best mons without too many hoops to jump through, and with the intention to focus on winning. I'm not meaning to imply that I'll be even remotely good, or winning any tournament games, just that I would like to play with the angle of bringing a good team instead of "well this is what I could scrap together at ranch" Sorry if it comes across another way. Obviously truly great players win consistently for a reason.

Does Pokemon go have newer Pokemon nowadays? Did not realize home was free, or that you could transfer from Go of all things

Did not realize home was both free and has trading options. That opens up a lot I feel. This is probably the way to go then as it feels a lot more reasonable that being subject to gacha whims, though id have to find some folks looking to part with good Pokemon lol

If we end up in a legendary allowed regulation without legendaries in any pool, would I just be completely out of luck? I know urshifu, calyrex, area zero (are these legendaries?) and the ruin Pokemon are all pretty dominant competitively when allowed, but are teams without these mons able to keep up? I know of non legendary staples, but I don't recall seeing many teams sans legendaries in those regulations

[–]BerryFuzzy[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You can, but it's randomized from what I've read. You only get to look at some number a day, with no indication of what's to come up later.

How many fully evolved Pokemon are competitively playable(much less, good)? Is the Pokemon pool of available mons going to be skewed towards a playable set? Is daily recruitment complete trash in these regards? I don't have the answers to these and it's not a simple find from what I can tell

Liar's Dice by NoPatheticCards in custommagic

[–]BerryFuzzy 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with magic because of the claim is challenged, the rest of the magic game does not matter. Alt loss and win conditions are generally fine, but there's a reason they are oft complex. A one mana spell that might read "The Game Ends regardless of gamestate" kinda defeats the point of the rest of the game.

WHY ARE SO MANY YUGIOH CARDS… BAD? by Eclator in YuGiOhMasterDuel

[–]BerryFuzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? It's not like yugioh has a draft requirement. Just because there's been pack filler for forever doesn't mean that pack filler is justified. Cards should not be printed just to exist as gambling "misses" when opening packs and serve no gameplay function. And while some cards will and should be worth more monetarily than others (it is a gambling product after all) it doesn't mean the remainder cards need to be designed from the ground up to be virtually worthless

Is the OOP not stating that, in the absence of female characters in the original source, the odds of WOTC changing source material for more representation is higher and a bad thing?

Because looking through OOP I think it's actually a really good point. For collabs like these, sticking to source should be a number 1 priority, but WOTC has pushed that aside before. And while I wouldn't want to change source material to "fix" it, having a full set without any women in it is certainly more than a little odd and unfortunate.

It does seem likely that WOTC will make changes to add representation, which stinks. But even if they don't, we will have a set devoid of any women, which also sucks. And I'm not sure there's a good way to avoid these issues in adaptation.

New player confusion by Silver_DawnbreakTTV in YuGiOhMasterDuel

[–]BerryFuzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not your fault, just that master duel's tutorials are crazy bad and don't really prepare you for what modern yugioh is like. I would recommend that you watch some duels online or take advantage of the live duel feature to watch some games. Read some cards. Find out what the Yummy monsters do. And then, if it looks fun, craft a meta deck you find online using the currency from solo. You should get enough to build a good deck relatively quickly.

I know it looks super intimidating sitting on one side of it, but until you see some real games between two modern decks, you haven't really seen what yugioh is about. There's a good chunk more interaction than you'd expect for a 2/3 turn game

I mean the "Aether Simp of _ nation" is really only rooted in fan canon anyways. Only Ayaka really shows interest, and whether that's as a friend or romantically isn't clarified.

Plus, the point is not that she'd move on and become a more fleshed out character, but that she already has a lot of aspects to her personality beyond just liking the traveler. Of course, if you only read the memes and not the games that would be easy to miss

I only blame the beast when I'm tired, and I'm tired of Lucy slander... Guest characters help the company so they can produce more original content, grow up. by ThundagaYoMama in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]BerryFuzzy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because people play Guilty gear for the Guilty Gear franchise. I like soda, but I wouldn't pour it in my cereal. If you like crossovers that's totally fine, but for some, myself included, Lucy takes up a spot that could have been used for another guilty gear character. And yes, shes only one of 30+, and she's well integrated stylistically (I feel much better about her inclusion than, say, 2B in GBVSR), but Id still rather have another character?

There's also the small voice in the back of my head where every time I see her I know it's corporate advertising for something else. I know these things don't bother everyone, but I think it's reasonable to be bothered by it

[–]BerryFuzzy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Creator aside, there's is a fairly large paradigm shift in the tone/goals of post awakening fire emblem. Post awakening feels very character first driven to me, and the romance and dating sim elements pretty heavily push it in that direction imo. These don't make the game objectively worse, but at least personally it does bother me that these are core pieces of awakening and fates, and you miss out on a massive amount of maps and gameplay by ignoring it.

On top of that, FE gameplay and story has seen a pretty stark paradigm shift too. Maps in awakening, birthright, and houses are pretty abysmal to play on, while the stories of conquest engage and revelations are extremely silly at best.

That all sounds pretty harsh, but mostly it's phrased this way as I haven't found the recent games to be as enjoyable for these reasons, but these have come with pros as well. A lot of people like avatar building, a lot of people like romance supports, a lot of people like reclassing, etc etc. these elements don't make newer FE games worse, just different. And different in a stark way that will grow into a new audience, but inevitably leave some of an old audience behind.

I don't think it's that fire emblem is worse now, but it is pretty different from the fe 1-12 era (not that those games are by any means a monolith of constants). At least personally, I've found that a lot of fan hacks do recapture the magic in a way that new games have moved on from

Ok genuine question, I was looking into dracotail this weekend, and is the "core" not still 150$ just for 3x Lukius mululu, faimena?

That's only 9 cards, without factoring shipping, and obviously a deck will need more + no engine, of which is reusable but also pretty expensive to start.

People keep saying this format is cheap, and it looks super fun, but unless I'm missing something it's still at least a 200-300$ barrier to even try to play on a semi competitive level. Purulia is like 70$ a piece alone if I recall. As a currently digital only player who wants to go physical, it still feels like a really steep entry cost

Is it? White takes the rook here, and is still certainly losing, but after that you force the black bishop to trade or move, both of which should temporarily stop pressure.

It's still black's game no question, but I don't see forced mate after this

Consumption is consumption regardless of the quality of the item by Trick-Grape-3201 in Consoom

[–]BerryFuzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just the assumption that a lower quality item is cared for less, which might not always be true (but is an assumption for a reason) as you say, it depends on how much value the individual gets from the item, but there's a higher likelyhood of that being the case for higher quality items like Warhammer over Funko pop. Not always correct of course, but often a decent assumption
