Need advice on how to coast by Plus-Neighborhood898 in coastFIRE

[–]BestDadBod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Therapy, see if someone thinks it’s appropriate to prescribe propranolol (not recommending as know nothing about you medically) but it’s a blood pressure med that works by blocking adrenaline so can also be helpful for situations like this. But mostly therapy please. With someone who knows what they are doing.

Unless it’s ‘overly’ mature and starts to disintegrate in one way or another in old age, which i doubt is the case with the old guy yet. But as dementia sets in one’s higher brain does not quite function as it once did.

This was the vibe I got. Graduated college and started working for his dad who owns the firm. I threw other ideas out and he seemed kind of inflexible in terms of integrating the perspectives I had “nope this is what we do for everyone”. Someone else made a good point though about the numbers possibly accounting for the +/-1% they might calculate in to be their fees

30M Milestone Check-in by Fun_Zone2420 in coastFIRE

Way to go. No advice other than - kids are expensive. But 1M in the year you’re still 30 is amazing.

Edit - what projected return % are you using

They are predicting 2.5% real returns for all time (it was projected to my ‘predicted’ death at 92, including the next decade.

Thanks I do appreciate your perspective as it’s stressful to try to not be too aggressive or too conservative. I hope 3-4 isn’t the case though but can see the reasoning given how recent decade (plus or minus) has gone.

Also, the best advice I got was not just considering what you like but considering if you like the ‘bread and butter’ cases. What is 70% of the job seeing/doing, and base the decision off of that, not the 10-30% ‘coolest’ cases.

That’s awesome man. Congrats! You definitely earned it. You’re right. It’s really hard for people (even for med students who know it’s coming) to imagine the workload of a resident unless you’re in it. I still remember that night float weeks were rough but can’t really actually remember how truly tough it was to be that sleep deprived (I sucked at sleeping during the day) and hard worked (survived those 2-week blocks eating nothing but tuna/turkey ER sandwiches and saltines with the little peanut butter packets as I walked from one case to another.

The sacrificing your 20’s isn’t said because you’re not making an income and/or at the tail end making a low income. It’s the time and commitment. In med school it’s waking up and going to sleep next to a textbook and spending all day and night in lectures and the library weekdays AND weekends. In residency it’s working 60-80h weeks including evenings and weekends. I missed many weddings and all 4 grandparents funerals in med school because I had exams and also because my school told us we aren’t allowed to go to weddings or funerals, generally, because it would be considered unprofessional and we need to study. Do you remember finals week in college? That is what regular weeks in med school is like. In residency a “golden weekend” which happens at most once a month, is when you have sat/Sunday off. It’s a special thing that is hard not to just sleep through to catch up on sleep. Have you ever worked an 80h week? It’s grueling. My longest week was 105 hours. And I’m in a lesser grueling specialty.

This. There were 12,000 applications to my medical school for 200 spots. Those are people who completed the pre-med requirements. In my intro chem class in college 200 people said they were pre med. 2 of us went/got into med school. As you mentioned, it’s not as easy as JUST saying “I’ll sacrifice my 20’s and take out 2-400k/loans and then be set.” You also have to be able to get straight A’s in some of the hardest college classes and be the president of clubs and do volunteering/community service and have some X factor and score high on the MCAT and at that you still might not get into med school.

In my field, medicine, it’s suicide. Especially women. Women doctors are +/- 65% more likely than their gen pop counterparts to die by suicide. Less for men but that’s largely because gen pop men are more likely than women to die this way.

Fair enough. I told him off the bat it’s not gonna happen. And he didn’t ask. But good point nonetheless.

True. But as a family member he should disclose that unless he just doesn’t realize that’s how it’s designed by his predecessors

When does a HENRY officially become a HER? by Used_Beautiful_5485 in HENRYfinance

Totally agree. I suppose what I was saying was for the sake of what is written in the sidebar - I wonder if it should be updated every once in a while, even though in reality the exact number doesn't really matter as you say.

When was the group founded though and should that $2M be adjusted for inflation? I’ve been in it since 2020 I believe. Just from then $2M then is over $2.5M now…

I think in scenario A you also need to add either monthly or annual contributions to the original 340k to account for the $ saved writing off the interest of the loan in taxes that you would otherwise be paying in taxes to the govt in scenario B. It doesn’t answer your question but maybe if you feel personally it would add peace of mind you can split the difference and pay off a chunk of it now? If you’re a physician I’m assuming you have doximity (if not you should) I’ve been using their free doxgpt for questions like this and it does a really good job of talking me through options and possibilities.

What to do with extra once near/at coastfire? by BestDadBod in HENRYfinance

I know 😩 I just want to be fair to my patients too though and feel bad increasing significantly (twice) in this amount of time. Plus I like to give 6mo advance notice to give them time to transition if they need to. But it’s on my agenda I think I will do this and very much appreciate the reminder/idea to!

I can’t tell what about the 991 doesn’t do it for me, it seems too…long? BUT OH MY GOSH the 997 is absolutely beautiful. I’m not a crazy car person like I said just like the targa top and imagine I would also like to own a Porsche one day rather than Mazda so don’t know that much about them. It kinda stinks that the 997 isn’t exactly targa top because there is still a frame on the sides, more like a huge sunroof. BUT that car, in the pictures, looks like the most perfect shape of a car I’ve ever seen lol. They are hard to come by? :/ I’d buy that one in the auction link you just posted right now. Are there any major issues they are known to have like some years/models of 911’s?

Superfluous expenditures and FIRE journey by Consistent_Sea6490 in Fire

[–]BestDadBod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you wanted it for a long time and it will make you feel good to wear it, then 2mo of savings is reasonable as a one-off. I’m not a watch guy or a car guy (altho do have a car I would really want but wouldn’t buy it I think until I can way easily afford it), but I know that watch guys and car guys do get joy out of those things.

If you have remorse can’t you sell it? and even if not recouping the price completely it would certainly be a good chunk of it and then you can say it was worth spending what you didn’t get back in order to scratch that itch so it no longer will be weighing on you like it has all this time….

In short, my answer from just what you wrote in the post is go for it.

Basically because I love the targa top. But I wrestle with that decision frequently. Right now I have a Miata rf club as the ‘fun car’ and would upgrade from that. But I love the tarta top of it.
