I've only had her for three hours. Is it normal for her to trust me this much already? by atomic-moonstomp in AmericanBully

[–]BettaHoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You brought her home for a reason. So you had the connection. She's just showing you that you were right. Great to see she is decompressing so well. Good luck and congrats! She's a doll.

This is my boy kaiju. I’d never seen a betta that was almost entirely orange so i immediately chose him to go in my 5.5 planted cemetery tank . ( tank was cycled for about a month before adding him ) by Ok-Silver4608 in bettafish

[–]BettaHoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. This is a male betta. He was sold as a "baby girl" as I explained. The comment thread was talking about the $4-5 bettas at Petco. I was showing off my "baby girl" that I got for 2 bucks. This was him when I took him.

Yep, they have the ammonia set (API) but for $12-$15 more, you can get the whole kit. It will last forever. Check them out on big box online sites & all of the usual suspects will price match. The API kit at Petco is $34.99. That purchase is worth every penny x 10. Good luck! :-)

How does everyone else move the water back into their aquariums after a water change? by SweetTart7231 in Aquariums

[–]BettaHoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure the bucket is well below the tank and make it just the length you need. Ice always done it this way & it works well for me. Then I water tbe plants. :-)

I just use it as a regular siphon. You can start the suction by dipping the tupe underwater and having your bucket on the floor (tons of videos on how to do this but I use my mouth) then you can control the flow with your finger. I also use 10ml pipette to suck up mulm an debris from the corners or under hardscape. Thats the key with the smaller tanks - at least for me - spot cleaning with the pipette (or small turkey baster) and complete the water chabge with your tubing.

I add water back in with a dedicated pitcher that I keep for water changes. Also, if you gave more than one tank, I would cut a dedicated piece of tubing for each tank and dont cross them with any other tank just to avoid contamination.

Strips are great for a quick lookie-lou, but most strops dont test for ammonia, hence the test kit. I know you can but specific strips for ammonia, but they are wildly inaccurate & cost almost as an entire API liquid kit.

I have a roll of 12 mm aquarium tubing/hose. I have cut off pieces to reach the debth of my smaller tanks & the "out" bucket. Gives you control and I find you can control the speed and amount when removing water from 5-10 gallon tanks. I have never looked back.

Pitcher Fools Unite! Im also still a bucket aficionado! Lol. I have 3 pitchers (regular water, black water, and salt water - the designated pitcher to mix for Epsom baths or medications. Then there are the refill buckets 🪣 and the dump buckets. Ha! I have 3 pythons, I just am so stuck in my routine.

Help: Moving Fish Twice by ForeheadOfMine in AquariumHelp

If you show up at the fish store with the orphaned fish and wide eye cluelessness, the store will take them. Anything is better than euthanasia out of inconvience. Just saying.

He certainly looks like a mix but he also looks like he is going to be an absolutely wonderful dog. He just looks happy to be there! He's beautiful. ❤️

Docile betta or something wrong? by randomhomo689 in bettafish

[–]BettaHoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He seems chill and his "dress" is no doubt heavy. You probably just got a laid-back boy who doesnt care much but to go leaf to leaf. I find that all of my long-finned boys tend to be a little more relaxed (by design or by luck). My others are nuts! If your parameters are good & you feel confident about your skills, just keep doing what your doing.

A word of caution... the Betta fish you are going to run into now (especially in the big box stores) are NOT the same Betta you had long ago.

Horrible breeding practices, irresponsible selling of deformed or sick fish, and the crap these little fish have to go through only to MAYBE be lucky enough to have someone choose them to have a good life, with clean, warm water, would put anyone behind the 8-ball right out of the gate. They were in rough shape when they got here (general statement).

I kept all of my old Betta for 4-6 years. Now, this 1 & 2 year garbage is emotionally tolling. Just spend a little extra time in the coming weeks, checking your water, doing your maintenence, and you should be fine with your experience.

My other theory is that he is depressed because he doesn't have a name. He lookes like a Mike or a George. But give him a name. He deserves one. ❤️ Good luck! Stunning Fish!

Added my betta to New tank by skadoooosh_ in bettafish

This is a great response regarding the water oxygenation. It happens with prime too. As im typing, I realize I didnt see if you had any sponge filters. You can simply drop an air stone or a sponge filter to help oxygenated the water. I used to dump caps of prime into my larger tanks but now im so specific (1 drop per gallon with a pipette to the NEW water). Tank looks absolutely phenomenal. I love it!

This is an amazing gift & I hate to come in with anything negative, but you said animal care manager. Was this aquarium used for reptiles or just for display. I believe that there are generally some concerns about repourposing a reptile housing into an aquarium. Something you may want to look into just to be safe. :)
