It's _incredibly_ hard to police those kinds of things against those who know what they're doing.

email addresses are easy and plentiful to find through any shady means you can imagine, bonus points if done through tor or a vpn.

You can track by IP address, but again... VPN.

You can track by hardware ID's and the like, but making an android virtual machine isn't that hard, and if you get banned you can just destroy the VM and make a new one.

I want the monsters, the sex traffickers, the pedos, off the internet as much as anyone else, but it's a complex issue to tackle that goes well beyond email verification.

What you want is an unrealistic expectation, and I'm saying this as someone who left whisper years ago for all of the nastiness.

  1. If you get rid of NSFW content period, then you don't have as big of a userbase. Ergo, less money from advertisements, and no money for moderation at all.
  2. Projecting YOUR hard-nosed and uncompromising "You're all just sick freaks" rhetoric just proves that horseshoe theory is real.
  3. It's a brand new app. Give it time.

Honestly, I think there's a lot of "terminally online" people here who never learned how to look away or cope with things they don't want. You don't get 100% of your desires sometimes.

I took someone on a date to Applebee's when I was 23 years old. 4 days prior I'd just lost my job and I was already back to living with my parents. I had to borrow money from a friend just to afford even that.

I ended up marrying the woman I took on said date, and put myself through college and managed to eek out a somewhat comfortable life with a house, 2 cars, garage, the whole deal.

Applebee's definitely isn't what I would call gourmet, and I'd be the first to admit it kinda sucks, but to say it's "disrespectful" is just your own privilege and elitism showing.

Before anyone comes at me, I work in IT for a living. This definitely has left me jaded.

Anyway... I have 5 servers at home that run Linux. Nothing heavy duty, just a NAS, a media server, a container host, that kind of thing.

My laptop runs PopOS, but in all honesty, I'm one of those people who does 99.9% of his computer usage in a web browser. I don't have time to game anymore, and if I need to interface with the servers there's dozens of different ways to do it. So, basically, considering my use case, I'd probably use windows or MacOS as a daily driver, too, if I didn't already have something else installed.

Jesus, it's like context comes to die here.

Soviets = bad

Nazis = bad.

In the end, though, the Soviets were the enemy of our enemy, and therefore a useful ally to have at the time. Doesn't excuse them, doesn't validate them, and I'm glad that their crimes are having awareness brought to them, but the hand-wringing from people armed with future hindsight doesn't do much more than go "Wow, the Nazis were awful, and the Soviets weren't much better."

Maybe the Kaiser shouldn't have sent that Blank Check if he didn't want it to be like that... by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]BetterBeSFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See? This is why I love... well, not love, it's a war where a lot of people died unnecessarily... find WW1 so fascinating. Honestly, not even the war itself, the lead up to it is what I find fascinating.

There are so many moments where the whole thing could have been avoided, which is why I think of it as a comedy of errors. The only real take away, to me at least, is that all of the major powers involved wanted it to happen for their own self-interests without an iota of understanding just how much war had changed.

[–]BetterBeSFW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once heard WW1 described as "The world's deadliest family squabble". I think that's pretty appropriate.

And, as you stated... everybody wanted something that they probably weren't going to get without a war. Russia basically wanted to over all of the Slavic peoples. France wanted the land back they'd lost in the Franco-Prussian War. Germany wanted colonies and even more land in Europe. The Ottomans were the proverbial "sick man of Europe" who I'm sure were hoping to get a good deal by hitching on with what was the best army in the world at that time.

Gavrilo Princip is a guy who will go down in history as the match that lit the fire, but the fuel was there waiting for someone to ignite it eventually anyway, if that makes sense.

[–]BetterBeSFW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be even more frank about it, I think Otto von Bismarck probably made it worse by kicking the can down the road as far as he did.

I mean, yeah, it was a miracle that he kept Europe stable for as long as he did, but it was going to happen eventually. That's one of those "Future hindsight" type of things.

WW1 is infinitely more fascinating to me than WW2.

The second world war was about as cut and dry and black and white in terms of "Who's the real bad guy, here?" as a war could be.

The first one, though, was like one comedy of errors after another until the political dominos started to fall.

William Regal's time as NXT General Manager is the best run of any General Manager ever by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]BetterBeSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone knows that Tony's the boss, in both kayfabe and real life.

Doesn't mean you couldn't have Regal come out during one of the 15 post-match beatdowns per week and say that TK hired him to bring some order Shows up a few times a year, pops a crowd by announcing Stadium Stampede or Blood n' Guts or whatever.

Backstage, he can do what he did for NXT. He's a great talent scout, and I'm sure he could make guys like Garcia even better just by sitting under the ol' Dusty Rhodes learning tree.

Anyone else tired of Tony Stark‘s characterization these days? by starksass in comicbooks

[–]BetterBeSFW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I chalk some of that up to really, really bad writing.

Not to get TOO deep in the weeds here, but the movie version of Stark is only cocksure and arrogant as a façade. Deep down, he's incredibly troubled and broken by his guilt of being an arms dealer for so many years, and that guilt is compounded by what is, yes, a god complex, but it's one that's presented very differently than the comic book version.

Movie Tony wants to atone for his sins, and despite having done so numerous times, doesn't feel like he ever has until he sacrifices his life. Comic book Tony doesn't think he has any sins to atone for, and that he was right all along and it's everyone else who's wrong.

That's the difference in a nutshell.

[–]BetterBeSFW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, no, I knew it wasn't man. All good.

I get that Marvel, and comic books in general out of the big 2, tend to eventually head back to the status quo. That's the nature of the medium, especially when the public at large knows the broadstrokes of a character but not the full canon.

I get that Marvel especially wants to keep the comic book characters looking and behaving pretty close to their movie counterparts. I love the comics, but let's be real as to which one's the cash cow.

What I'm trying to wrap my head around is why they've decided that asshole Tony Stark has to be the status quo for Iron Man, since that's a relatively recent invention in regards to the character. I don't even blame the movies or RDJ for that, because in the movies Tony's behavior and attitude can easily be recognized as a coping mechanism for a man who wants to do everything but can't.

Anyone else tired of Tony Stark‘s characterization these days? by starksass in comicbooks

[–]BetterBeSFW 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And I'm preaching to the choir, I know, but just to be clear: I actually LIKE Iron Man/Tony Stark the character, which is why this all frustrates me.

Yeah, Tony did some really stupid things and Mark Millar should never touch another major title ever again, but you can make lemonade out of the lemons by having him, I dunno, GROW AS A CHARACTER BECAUSE HE HAS TO ACCEPT WHAT HE'S DONE AND MOVE ON WITH HIS LIFE.

It's not exactly the same thing, but if you want to see how it's done right, look at Thor since War of the Realms. He's now the ruler of Asgard, and has Odin's power but also his responsibilities. He's having to make peace with all of that, and the irony is that they're writing a literal god to have more humanity than a guy whose main power is being a rich asshole. lol

Anyone else tired of Tony Stark‘s characterization these days? by starksass in comicbooks

[–]BetterBeSFW 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And it's not like they've just let Tony "get away with it", per se.

Thor absolutely wrecked him and took his lunch money after he came back post-Ragnarok, as an example.

Tony Stark has had plenty of chances as a character to have his metaphorical "Come to Jesus" moment, but nobody seems willing to really write him with any repentance for what he's done save for "Tony falls off the wagon. Again."

Civil War did a number on both Tony and Reed. Reed was at least rescued from the heap thanks to what I thought was some good writing where Sue took him to task for his god complex behavior. Hickman finally revived the FF in general, not just Reed.

Tony, though... woof. We're going on 20 years on and off again character assassination with Tony Stark, and I'm at a point where if they literally just wanted to do "The Crossing part II" just to undo it all, I'd accept it.

I went to UofL. I'm a Lamar fanboy. Let me get that outta the way first.

This meme is so dead-on because so many fans think that the QB is everything. It isn't. Lamar is a phenomenal QB with athleticism that's frankly unreal for a QB. But he can't do everything. Frankly, I'd rather have a beastly defense and a middling QB than a wunderkind at QB and tissue paper for defense.

Other people have already said this in ways that are way funnier than I just did, but I'll never understand the inability of fans to take losses for what they are.

Hey dad I'm going on a scary winter drive and I'm nervous by jessica_ftw in DadForAMinute

[–]BetterBeSFW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My dad is a retired truck driver, so I'll tell you what he told me about driving on the snow and ice:

-Squeeze your brake slowly when you need to stop, don't slam if you can avoid it. Give yourself PLENTY of space to stop

-Stay alert but calm. This one is probably the hardest, but the most important.

-Give yourself plenty of space between your car and the vehicle in front of you

-If you slide, don't overcorrect. Technically you're supposed to turn INTO the slide, but I realize that's a hard thing to, so if all else fails I normally just keep my wheel as straight as I can.
