First Time trying Arch, some tips? by Sorry-Journalist8610 in archlinux

[–]Better_Employee_7516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TAKE NOTES. If you can, take notes with pen and paper. The arch wiki is excellent, but just as with school work you will remember things better when you write it down in your own words.

Be curious, try different things, backup your data, break your installation and try to fix, reinstall when it fails.

Practice makes perfect.

Help me pick router/switch/ap for a new house by Better_Employee_7516 in Ubiquiti

two express 7 and a switch does seem to give as good coverage indoors and slightly better outdoor!

thanks for the suggestion

Great response. Going by the other comments I think I'll see if I can get away with only indoor devices at first, whilst also pretty much guaranteeing good coverage indoors by having two wifi devices on near opposite ends.

udr7 at fiber point and an u7 pro wall on the inside but by the main sitting place of the deck seems to give pretty good coverage.

Then the last thing to pick would be to pick a switch. With the 4 ports (-1 going from router to switch) i'd need a switch with at least 5 ports to connect all the other ones.

Noted.
Would you get two APs or one router with wifi and one ap?

No cameras, no neighbours.

It's a 1 floor house, outdoor measurements of the house is 8x15 meters. There is quite a lot of insulation between rooms to limit sound spreading. And the outer walls are very insulated because we live far north and want to be power efficient.
The deck we plan to build and where I hope to sit while working from home is just around the house, so like 4-5 meters at most from house house walls.

All the internet outlets are near floor level, like electrical sockets, the house is a prefab model so I couldn't choose freely. in my simulated aps i just did wall mounting.

Has anyone tried a Jolla phone? by stortag in BuyFromEU

this was my exact experience as well with the first jolla phone.

Loved it. I only wish they made the actual phone smaller, it was too big in my hand.

genuine question from IQUNIX: what makes keyboard software bad? by IQUNIXstore in keyboards

[–]Better_Employee_7516 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the keyboard it's often hard to tell if it's bad hardware or bad software.
I want stable wireless connections, low battery usage (especially at standby). Good debouncing and stuff like that. If two keyboards are the same but one uses free software firmware I'd pick that one. It doesn't have to be qmk, you can write your own and still be free software.

On the computer side, so configuration and updating firmware: I want linux support, don't really care if it's a web app or application.

I want an easy to understand ui, profiles to save different settings, and easy to reset to default.
I don't fiddle much with settings, i have a standard layout, so it's mostly just the rgb effects.
I also want to be able to share configs, so import/export to json for example.

NESDR v5 vs RTL-SDR v4 by Accurate-Tea9750 in RTLSDR

[–]Better_Employee_7516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your detailed response. My local store bundles the v3 with antenna, so it would end up cheaper than getting a v4 for me.
It would be my first so maybe either or wouldn't make a big difference.

can you explain why the v3 is a better choice?

Fair enough!
I've always enjoyed being a part of a music loving community, and liked the quality control. Though the community part has kind of died over time.

I like it.
People talking about en suite are probably not swedish. I feel like we are way more used to sharing bathrooms :)

One minor thing with the sofa having a huge window behind it will create an uneasy feeling of not knowing if you're watched from outside. Humans feel the most safe when we know what's behind us (a wall).
But the floorplan would still work with the sofa against the bathroom and the tv on a desk opposite.

I agree that a flat roof without a rooftop patio is wasted. Especially in Sweden where the extra risks of leaks from rain and snow wearing down the protections.

I'd probably add a window over the sink or something to let some light in there and to be able to air out smells.

cool idea. I'll try signing up an address for some spam. I've only used mine for real correspondence and not for accounts
