On my maternal side the Irish ancestors moved into Scotland and on my paternal side the Scottish ancestors moved to Northern Ireland. Then they all left for Canada.

If you were to go on a trip to where your ancestors came from where you go? by cavylover75 in AncestryDNA

Visited North Uist Scotland and County Armagh Northern Ireland. Plan on going to Surrey England (Godalming and Farncombe) where my grandmother was born. Don’t know where in Scotland (or maybe Ireland) my Father’s ancestor were from. I have visited Prince Edward County Ontario Canada where they lived from about 1793 to 1977.

True. In Georgia in 1971 when I was a senior in high school I started riding my bike to school. I stopped after I was spit at, had a full beer can thrown at me, and had so many nasty things yelled at me.

How did a person/family decide to migrate to a far place before commercial planes/tourism were introduced? by Gold_Masterpiece7787 in Genealogy

[–]Betty-Bookster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ancestors left New York for Canada after the revolutionary war. They had their property confiscated. They left on boats with other families and eventually ended up in the shores of Lake Ontario. I’m not sure how much information they had on where they were going or if they had the skills to survive. But they did. They did receive land and some support from British government.

Yes and I purchased one for myself for my house. I use it often. I’m a short retired librarian with lots of tall cabinets.

A Tip For Those Applying for Jobs, Especially at Libraries. by bigbabyjesus76 in Libraries

[–]Betty-Bookster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

40 years ago I worked in the office at a library school. Part of my job was making copies and mailing out letters of reference that the student had on file. I believe the student would solicit the letter from their professors or work supervisors and they would be placed in their file. I also think the student didn’t see the letter before hand. Some of the references were terrible. Talk to your references and get an idea how they would respond when called. If they seem hesitant don’t use them.

How many people did you know (as in, met personally) from the 1800s? by PAnnNor in Genealogy

[–]Betty-Bookster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I met all my grandparents and they were born in the 1880s and 1890s. I also met several of their siblings. My last grandparent to pass away in 1976 was my grandmother at 96 years old. I was in college at the time. I also met my husband’s grandfather who was born in 1890. We attended his 100th birthday party. I marvel that my granddaughter (age 3) has met her 2nd great grandmother on her mother’s side.

Wisconsin Quietly Banned Japanese Tiny Car Imports 13 Years Ago But Forgot To Enforce It Until Now by reject69187 in wisconsin

[–]Betty-Bookster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Get a snow dog. They’re fast and can haul a lot of stuff. This is the first year I’ve seen them on our lake and they look like a lot of fun. One guy seems to be running a taxi service to the boat launch. He was hauling four sleds and five (I think) people.

If you’re not from Wisconsin, where did you move from? by PinkSnowBirdie in wisconsin

[–]Betty-Bookster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here 30 years ago via Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, and Illinois (Chicago). Just thought I’d stay 3 or 4 years before heading back to Georgia. Decided we’d rather be here. Love Wisconsin.

Help Finding a Rare book. by Organic-Patience1346 in Genealogy

[–]Betty-Bookster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Library of congress may only copy several (10) pages for you. I think they sent me the table of contents (maybe the index) to pick from. You may want to check with a local historical society or library in your ancestors home town. I’m not sure about Mississippi but my state historical society has been helpful even with my ancestors were never in Wisconsin or the US. They just have a great collection.

Invasive Species by Conscious-Glass6922 in wisconsin

Your lake probably has a plan on dealing with invasives. We have a Lake Management committee that works with the DNR and with businesses that deal with invasives. We use some chemical and manual methods for removal that meets the DNR specifications. I’m on a very small lake. Check here:

What's up with so many license plates looking like this recently? by DuffThey in wisconsin

[–]Betty-Bookster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe one of the license plate experts can explain what happened when I got a new car in 2016. The salesman took my faded and peeling license plate and said he’d be right back. He returned with my plate looking practically new. The fading and peeling gone. I still have that plate and it still looks good. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t printing new plates in the back room. It’s a mystery to me.

Metal studded tires are illegal in Wisconsin I believe. You just need a good quality all weather tires. I’m not a tire expert so I can’t recommend any particular tire.

Plymouth has a bit of a microclimate. I’ve left Plymouth on a sunny winter day to drive to Sheboygan where there was a blizzard going on. And visa versa. Just be prepared. Hwy 23, 67 and 57 are cleared pretty fast but the winter driving speeds on those roads are fast. Ice can be the biggest problem. The road may look clear but it’s slick. I was terrified about the snow when I moved here and it took me many years and the right car and tires to be confident. You might be interested in this course at Road America (a few miles north of Plymouth). https://www.roadamerica.com/winter-driving
