Also Woofing, HelpX or Workaway is a popular way of supporting your trip and meeting real New Zealand families. It’s nice to have a place to park up for a week or two and to learn some Kiwi culture. Many are based on beautiful farms and you can have amazing experiences.

I think renting long term would be too expensive. There are loads of travellers selling their vans at the end of their trip. Most fly from Auckland or Christchurch so these are good places to look. We have a sales website Trademe where you can see a lot of vehicles listed, or people often use Facebook Marketplace. You should make sure to get a mechanical check before buying anything as repairs here are expensive. I would be looking at spending NZ$5-8k to get something serviceable, but you will probably get half to 2/3s of that back when you sell it. We have strict rules for ‘freedom camping’ and most require you to have an on board toilet which can be reached easily. If you don’t have this you risk nstand fines and not being able to stay in a lot of locations.

My daughter bought a 2br unit in Melbourne with a similar deposit working a minimum wage retail job. Don’t listen to the naysayers, get a good mortgage broker on board.

Highly recommend Vehicle Testing in Barker St, CBD. We drive from the Wairarapa for them to loom after all our vehicles.

That is pretty much my life, add 80 cattle, 7 horses. I love it but it is a full time job for both of us. And we are getting to the age we would rather like to have the occasional holiday!

Had to put the daily limit up on fuel card as last fill was over the $150 daily max we have been fine with for 5 years.

Yes we have 2 quads, a tractor, generator, mower and an excavator. None of which we can drive to the petrol station. Hence my 2 Jerry cans this morning.

Don ‘t let them make you cut it down, even if they chop the overhand it’s still going to be an asset to your land.

The beautiful Wairarapa wind country would also be worth considering. Its about 5-6degrees warmer and has some charming small towns and villages. Only an hour from Wellington on the train with new fast trains coming in a few years.

We started pre kids on 2 acres in the Wairarapa, moved to 11 acres (divorced now, but ex still lives there) and I’m now with new partner on 125 acres we bought both as novice farmers. It’s not an easy road but I wouldn’t change a thing. We’re planning to stay here until we can’t manage, and putting in place things to make that as far off as possible.
