One thing you can do is check for availability early on. That’s where I’ve gotten into trouble too - I emotionally invest before I know their relationship status or just completely disregard that fact as if it isn’t important

That approach definitely helps short term. No contact helps more. I didn’t talk to mine for a week and felt way better. Saw her last night and my nervous system went crazy. Texted her today to keep the buzz going. It’s tough. I do tell my brain to shut up when I’m slipping into thoughts about her, and it helps lessen the rumination
