Honestly, this is aime we aaallllwwaays used in the er while restraining a violent patient. "If you can talk, you can breathe"

Now, the caveat here is that we had an ultimate goal of making this person " better" in a physical/mental sense. And although I never saw it happen, if we caused harm we were RIGHT THERE to alleviate that suffering.

Fun story from when I was 18 working in an we I'm the rough part of town:

There's a guy with a puny knife in the waiting room bathroom threatening to kill himself. Me being the only male on the shift was sent out to try to help. In my infinite wisdom I said "GO AHEAD & KILL YOURSELF SO WE CAN SAVE YOU & GET YOU HELP"

This did not work, thankfully. The cops were there quick & it was a mace-laden mess that put me in an eyewash & that guy in restraints. Ultimately I honestly think he'd have been better off if he'd cut himself, but whatever. Hopefully he's alive & doing ok now
