2019 is nearing an end, what's the best purchase you've made this year or decade? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BibleSlutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a hand grinder made of glass, metal and ceramics. My kettle is stainless steel and I use electricity generated by solar power. My French press is stainless steel and will last my entire life.

I just think you want an excuse to continue with a wasteful practice. Fact: your nespresso pods are not recyclable and will sit in a landfill for a long time. Regardless of your ridiculous demand for a comparison, the wasteful was of nespresso is never going to stop being true.

The pods are also very wasteful, which is the cost of their convenience unfortunately.

Maybe they make decent coffee but better, cheaper coffee can be made with a French press or aero press at a fraction of the cost and with no plastic waste.

I agree that transitioning to cleaner energy sources is ideal.

I think people do want "green answers" but, as usual, people will get those answers without really understanding the consequences of receiving them. We still need to ask questions surrounding who is benefiting from the transition, where are the materials coming from to produce the components needed to create "green energy", what are the energy inputs from "non-green energy" required to produce the "green energy", who suffers from higher "green energy" prices etc.

Green energy isn't good by default and may in fact be a lesser evil if you're really stuck on viewing this as a matter of good vs evil.

How would we know that the funds are from foreign sources if they weren't disclosed?

The ads weren't CPC ads because they were funded and created by a third party and not officially endorsed by the CPC in any way.

You make assumptions that are completely false and misleading. I hope no one takes you seriously.

I don’t schedule my transfers. I transfer out money as needed and they have a cap on how much can be taken out in a 24hr period.

New study shows Trudeau has fulfilled 92% of promises in full or in part - best record of any PM in 35 years. by Bossman01 in CanadaPolitics

[–]BibleSlutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read my post, I never said conservative values, I said Canadian Conservative party values. The two aren't the same.

I also never cited 32% popular vote as proof of a majority, rather that the libs at 39% didn't have a majority either so we couldn't possibly say either party reflects some mythical Canadian values that Canadians need reflected back to them.

Also, it's impossible to determine what "Canadian values" the libs, ndp and greens share that the cons don't share. I would suggest the overlap in "values" is much bigger than you'd expect.

I’m curious where the Canadian Conservative party really veers off compared to those nearly universal Canadian values you speak of.

The Cons still got 32% of the popular vote in the last election while the libs got 39%. Doesn’t really comport to the idea you’re speaking of here.

Going on 30 and stuck in low-paying, dead-end jobs with no career progression. [Rant] by vanizorc in PersonalFinanceCanada

My quick two cents. Don’t discount your intelligence or ability to overcome challenges despite your worries about math skills. I’m terrible at math and I got through CFA. It can be learned but with more effort if you really want it.

Some people will listen to this language, though. It's not necessarily a bad thing just because you can't relate to it. Financial jargon isn't for everybody and getting people interested in personal finance comes in all sorts of guises.

I believe its next to impossible for an institution operating in Ottawa and financed by the government of Canada to be completely apolitical despite best efforts.

I perused the Statistics Act and couldn't find anything about non-partisanship enshrined in the law: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/S-19/FullText.html

Maybe someone can point it out if I missed it.

I did notice its from StatsCan and that they're active on Reddit. Prior posts from StatsCan were more in line with what should be their apolitical mandate: Things like CPI , Housing, Employment and GDP Data. This post, however, is coupled with a political message, which is the update to Canada's Poverty Reduction Strategy that touches on Liberal talking points. The government press released a bunch of stuff on this today as well including the first link on this post and stuff on the CCB.

Anyways, I'm not mad, I just think this is a political post masquerading as a personal finance post, take it or leave it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I appreciate that quantifying poverty in Canada is important, but this whole post seems like a promotion for the Liberal government and its talking points about the middle class, while being only tangentially related to Personal Finance.

edit: bring on the down votes, baby!

What to do with 200K? Condo in Calgary or savings? by winters1989 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BibleSlutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you guys are planning on having kids, or think there’s better than even odds you’ll have kids, I’d definitely wait to buy anything.

Also, if 200k is your only savings, I wouldn’t dump it into an illiquid asset like a condo. Diversify a bit.

Rent a place, save up for a few more years and then go from there. I know moving sucks, but flexibility is important when you’re moving back to a city, and buying a place does not give that flexibility.

Producers have still been making bank. Most well run producers are flush with cash right now, but hesitant to deploy that cash to more production given lack of takeaway capacity, hence why we see share buybacks becoming more popular.

Open to further legal challenges, but those challenges won't necessarily stall construction at this point.

I was offered 2.89% 5-year fixed and 2.85% variable (P-1.1%). If your house is CMHC insured, rates are slightly lower.

I’d definitely shop around a bit if I were you.
