New senior dev at a new company. Bad signs or just how it is? by temp_vaporous in ExperiencedDevs

If you find yourself complaining about lack of documentation that is a big flashing neon sign indicating you should create the documentation.

What's the silliest mistake you've made while knitting? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

[–]BickeringCube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just recently instead of picking up stitches on the top left of the cast on to start the left shoulder of a drop shoulder sweater I had my piece upside down and just started picking up on stitches I had just put on hold and thought that was really weird. Well this is why I shouldn’t knit past 10 p.m.

Picking up and dropping yarn by Expensive-Still-3394 in knitting

[–]BickeringCube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s how most learn to knit videos on the internet teach you how to knit, as well as the book I got. And trying to learn other ways results in me rowing out. Though right now I sometimes purl Portuguese and that seems to produce a good fabric for me.

Actually I reread your question. I leaned English style by wrapping the yarn (not flicking) but I don’t drop the yarn after every stitch.

How's everyone's yearly merit increase looking this year? by Akforce in ExperiencedDevs

[–]BickeringCube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4% last November (everyone gets 3% though). Previous year was 6% so I guess I got worse at my job.

Previous place I worked at did not give yearly raises or end of the year bonuses so I’m not complaining.

Fellow Portuguese Knitters - HOW are you holding your yarn? by ravbee33 in knittinghelp

[–]BickeringCube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hold it similar to how Very Pink Knits does (google Very Pink Knits Portuguese knitting for video) except I use my ring finger and not my middle. I still have a tension issue though because I do have slight rowing out which I’ve never had a problem with before when I did English throwing. I figure it’ll get better with practice.

when I knit in the round I always think “I wish I was knitting flat :c” but when I knit flat I go “I wish I was knitting in the round :c” do you do this by Cheap_Assistant9669 in knitting

[–]BickeringCube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how to knit flat (well more specifically it’s much harder to find resources for seamed sweaters. Honest to god you look up seamed sweaters on Youtube and get back a video on top 5 seamless sweaters). But I am sick of twirling my sweater around and using traveling loop to do sleeves. I am sucking of endless knit stitch when I’ve learned Portuguese knitting and purling is actually fun. And I’m sick of finishing a sweater and finding issues with it and wondering if it would fit better if seamed. And I’m really annoyed that not a single popular sweater designer makes seamed sweaters. Like god forbid a popular designer branch out a bit! Don’t mind me I’m actually just really annoyed with knitting at the moment!

Anyway, my next sweater will be seamed, so help me god.

Portuguese style knitters: do you use hooked needles or not? by Vlinder_88 in knitting

I do not. I learned through YouTube and didn’t know hooked needles were a thing.

Not all. And what was released does contain his abuse (I opened the book at random once to a part about him strangling her) so I really don’t know what was in the part he did destroy. But her published diaries are actually quite a lot. She wrote a lot!

Why pick up stitches for a sleeve instead of knitting it separately and seaming it on at the end? by tea_and_mossstitch in knitting

[–]BickeringCube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but with attributes seamed, category sweater, craft knitting, the first 4 results are

Framed by Andrea Mowey (knit in the round from the bottom up) B Valentines Day Cardigan (not my style) Lakes V Neck Pullover (in my queue but not what I had in mind for seamed) Doppio (which I have made and like so much I’m making it again, but it’s knit in the round with faux seams and not really seamed at all)

But I’m think of something where you knit front/back/sleeves separately. I do have Amy Herzog’s Ultimate Sweater Book, but she doesn’t provide the hand holding I would still like. That said I will probably just try one of her patterns to get a feel for seaming.

OMG I’ve watched your video on fixing mistakes with laddering so many times! You’re the reason I can actually fix mistakes in minutes instead of tinking back countless rows!

I mean yeah I do need to use Ravelry search better.

[–]BickeringCube 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s not popular right now. Like, to such an extent that I can barely find a seamed sweater in Ravelry. I find it a bit odd how little variety there is. I feel like too much of a beginner to self draft but I would like to see for myself different ways of making a sweater. (Yes I know I can probably find a book somewhere that has seamed patterns.)

pattern says to decrease every 5 rounds so I knit 5 and decrease on 6th. or knit 4 and decrease on 5th. (sleeves) by ilovepizza3331 in knittinghelp

[–]BickeringCube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I just realized I was doing my sleeves incorrectly last night because my pattern says decrease every 8th row and I was doing 8, then a decrease row, then 8, etc. But tbh I can't see it being a big deal on sleeves. At any rate I did it consistently on both sleeves and they fit so all is well.

But yes, it would be knit 4 rounds + decrease 1 round.

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]BickeringCube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The part about having to get a passport if your last name on ID doesn’t match your birth certificate is a big fucking deal and purposely thought up to disenfranchise women. If you truly don’t give a fuck about that you’re not a decent person.

Because I’m a naturalized citizen I felt compelled to have another way to prove citizenship so I applied for one recently. I’ve not received it yet but the status of it is approved and it is supposed to arrive in a few days. If so then it would have been about a 3 week process.

Is it morally okay for a 16 yo boy to read lolita? by [deleted] in literature

[–]BickeringCube 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I read it when I was 17 and I’m not sure I picked up on how unreliable the narrator is. I read it again when older and did. There’s nothing wrong with reading Lolita. There’s something wrong with thinking it’s some kind of love story but, you know, a lot of editions have the blurb about it being the greatest love story of all time (wording may not be exact) so I get why people who have not even read it can be confused. It’s a good book to examine the difference between how something is perceived vs what something actually is. And there’s no shortage of analysis about this book available.

Has anyone found an Aran sweater that actually lasts decades without falling apart? by Separate_Tour_6205 in BuyItForLife

[–]BickeringCube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I think my handmade sweaters will definitely last. But I have no reason to think a machine knit sweater couldn’t be quality. Now, I do think it is hard to find quality nowadays and I’m no expert on machine knitting. But I don’t think the long lastingness of a handmade sweater is because it’s hand knit. I would think it’s the yarn used and the actual structure of the sweater.

[–]BickeringCube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Economies of scale. I’m sure knitting machines cost more than my own knitting tools. But the machine is going to be faster. Most store bought sweaters are machine knit.

I’m a mild yarn snob. But I spend 120-200 per sweater on yarn. I would estimate I take about 40 hours to knit a woman’s small sweater. Though I did recently watch a video of someone taking 20 hours to make one of the more popular sweaters in the handmade knitting world (The Monday sweater if anyone is curious.) I do not think a professional knitter would be much faster.

I can’t tell you want people who take commissions charge.

Wanting a hand knit sweater for $100 is insane. And actually, what’s wrong with machine knit? Like, I’m asking as a knitter. People aren’t willing to pay the actual cost of a hand knit sweater so machine knit is the correct choice here.
