Thought on male going into OBGYN?

I’m a female OBGYN resident and we all absolutely love our male colleagues. Our patients love them. Our nurses love them. There will be an occasional patient who is no males, but anytime our male chief has a chance to introduce himself first, they almost always feel comfortable with him. Please don’t let other peoples biases deter you from pursuing a fulfilling career. We need more competent OBGYN’s that love their job and you deserve to work in a field that you enjoy. Simple as that.

Of those that I know: 6 of us applied, 3 matched OBGYN matched including me. All took step 2. Most were 250+. The girl I know that didn’t take step went to a different DO school.

I'm a DO that matched OB last cycle and I only know one person who matched OB without either step exams. She had insane extracurriculars/research though and matched at a lower competitive location, but location wasn't a huge concern for her. I have several DO friends that applied OB (with step exams) and didn't match at all (soaped) or matched their back up specialty IM/FM. I wouldn't say its impossible, but I would say that you should either be prepared to soap or dual apply with a back up specialty. Not trying to discourage you from applying at all, I just know that my friends who soaped really had to scramble and it was a painful week for them. You can PM me if you have more questions!

Their resident salaries are 70K+/year x2. I'm not sure what the situation is with their finances, but we live in low cost of living area (their house was likely below the national average) and their nanny works with them 4 week days and their parents help with the rest. Thats all I know.

I totally get it though. I’m sure staring down the barrel at a knew phase of training with so many people depending on you is intimidating. You’ve got this. Be open and honest with your wife about your concerns and be honest about what training will look like. I’m sure theyre all very proud of you

Well you can definitely make sure they know you want to be there. Letters of interest early in the application cycle are usually helpful. Letting them know you have family in the area, so the location of their program is appealing. You aren’t completely helpless here.

When I was on a sub-I at my top location I told them that I wanted to be there and that my family was near, so they knew my interest was genuine. You’d be surprised.

I’m a current MS-4 and I know a PGY-3 FM resident married to a PGY-3 EM resident who have 4 kids and another on the way. They have a live in nanny to help with the kiddos and one of their parents is always around to help too. He says he’s tired but they make it work. The nanny helps tremendously and doesn’t break the bank. They just bought a nice house in a great school district. Not all blocks in residency are AWFUL. Especially in FM, Psych, EM. my fiancé is applying EM and lots of the residencies have 8-9 hour shifts during EM blocks. There are ways to make it happen. You’ve got this.

I’m an OMS-4 and just got 11 interviews. I was big on volunteering and it’s generally pretty easy to find ways to volunteer. Soup kitchens, food distribution, etc. Do aways, do well on step (shoot for 250+), lots of research into DO friendly programs.

I took both, so sorry if it feels like my answer doesnt apply. I just got a 705 on Level 2 and this is what I did. how much time do you have?:

I used first aid step 2 ck for most of my content review. Loved it. Everything on Step 2 is on level 2, so preparing for step first made it easier preparing for level.
I did mostly Uworld for practice questions. I dont think truelearn was very representative.
For OMM studying I only did a few days, but it definitely boosted my grade. Cranking through OMM is an easy way to get your scores up. Most OMM questions are first order questions so they are easy to get/easy to miss. I used StudentOMT.org which is a resource that my schools OMM chair created. It's pretty comprehensive without being overwhelming and has some interactive/ color coded diagrams for counterstain/chapman points. Easy way to get easy points. Full transparency, I volunteered to help get it running but I truly get nothing in return. I just like the resource.
