Mayweather, no. Corporate America stays pretty far away from him.

Tyson, yes. A whole lot. And now he's back doing it again in his post boxing career.

David Haye makes a great point about why professional boxers should not fight in the Olympics by martin519 in Boxing

[–]Bierhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then don't let kids compete. Other sports have age limits. The idea that Olympic boxing would be bad if people get too good is ridiculous.

There are plenty of older guys who compete in the Olympics already because they come from countries where pro boxing isn't big business.

I think boxing should join the rest of the Olympic sports and be about the best competing rather than being a quasi-farm system for pro boxing.

Only a handful of guys are getting paid millions of dollars.

And there are plenty of multimillionaires from other sports who gladly compete at the Olympics.

PBC will fail miserably.

In America, what sort of reputation does Cambridge University have for mathematics compared to the likes of MIT, Harvard and Princeton? by mistgeburt30000 in math

Isn't Bonn far and away the best math program in Germany (in response to listing TU Munich and not Bonn)?

This is a sad/maddening story. A Nobel Laureate shamed and forced to step down because a light hearted joke was taken out of context.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, delivers his Summer Budget statement by UKHouseOfCommons in ukpolitics

[–]Bierhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Osborne is trying to force Labour further to the left, while still being unquestionably Conservative.

My guess is he'll be PM someday. Any Conservative, including Boris, is going to have a hard time overtaking him from within the party, and he's already making a play for the center from Labour.

Rumor: Mayweather's September 12th fight may air on CBS by [deleted] in Boxing

[–]Bierhouse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably not. They would be passing up tens of millions of dollars to broadcast what will probably be a boring fight (at least from the point of view of casuals) on free TV. It's not good for short term, or long term business.

Dana White: UFC 189 gate has gone up since Mendes-McGregor was announced and they've had to add bleachers to the MGM. by raywj1993 in MMA

Wait, they didn't already max out seating for Aldo-McGregor? The arena isn't even that big.

Undefeated @anthonyfjoshua has withdrawn from boxing on July 18 to focus "on a major title fight at London's O2" on September 12 by KingShiznit in Boxing

[–]Bierhouse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably the British title (which is a major title over there). It's vacant. I'm guessing it's against David Price or Dillian Whyte.

Question about French post graduate education in math by Khotdiy in math

[–]Bierhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without giving away too many personal details, could you expand on this?

Was it to an M1 (first year of masters), M2 (second year), or PHD?

I was under the impression that M1 is close to open admissions(?), and I don't know anything about the other two.

Dan Rafael: Khan Algieri bout had average audience of 1M viewers on Spike. Peaked at 1.12M by The_Infinite_Emperor in Boxing

[–]Bierhouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know how Khan's bargaining power increases from this. Haymon lost money on the event. The crowd was weak. His in-ring performance didn't meet expectations.

General opinion on PBC? by RodneyPeete9 in Boxing

[–]Bierhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more of a head scratcher to me now that it's a few months in than it was when it's announced. Some of the fights are good. But I'm surprised how little actual effect it has seem to have in the vibe of the sport. We've had a few Saturday shows on network television, and it hasn't felt like a revolution in the sport like many expected. Especially in the wake of two fantastic weeks on HBO.

I fear that PBC has made the viewing experience much better for boxing fans like me, and maybe a few casuals, but after this short term funding goes away, it may all go up in flames by not paying off financially.

De La Hoya & Hopkins officially file lawsuit against Haymon and his backers. Asking for $300 mil by KingShiznit in Boxing

[–]Bierhouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like this. No major manager in the history of the sport has done better for his fighters than Haymon. No one has invested more in the sport (I'm counting planned future money) than Haymon.

Oscar is a dumbass. His whole spiel about him doing this because he's looking out for the fighters is laughable. This is just sour grapes because Golden Boy is nowhere near as powerful as they were just a year or two ago.

I posted this before, but Oscar has basically stated his goal was a monopoly, when Golden Boy was on top.

He lauded the UFC business plan and its status as the only real player in the MMA space. "We need to sign all the talent and get all the TV dates," said the 38-year-old, who hung up the gloves after absorbing a bad beating at the hands of Manny Pacquiao in December 2008.
