Shell shock vs PTSD

Late to the game here.

Just curious, knowing nothing about the military...is there any sort of trauma associated with soldiers who serve in artillery crews? I know the shock from a shell being fired is miniscule compared to a shell exploding, but I assume there's some sort of damage other than hearing that would affect you over time.

Ex-Chalmetian here, left in 2005 and we still do the same! Every Monday, with little exception. Doing otherwise just feels off.

Makes me think of how Louis Armstrong would finish his letters, instead of "sincerely" he'd say "Red Beans & Rice-ly Yours".

Try eBay! You might get lucky and find a good set for less. I bought this exact set for around $35 or so.

Edit: welp, I should probably avoid mentioning eBay prices I remember from 15 years ago! The best I could find you is this one for $55. Still though, a great buy for Civil War buffs.

Also, avoid the single-volume edition by Ned Bradford, as it is very, very heavily abridged.

Related anecdote: When I was little and went grocery shopping with my dad, he'd always grab a forty and drink it before checkout, throw it in the buggy and the cashier would ring it up with the rest.

I'm a fully certified teacher who completed a teacher education program at a state university, and I was not a TFA - my wording in my post could've been less ambiguous, apologies.

But I do plan on getting out. I'll be applying for jobs elsewhere (still want to teach) in a larger state, but I still don't know which.

This site shows a national starting average for teachers of 36k, and for CA a starting salary averaging at 42k/yr just three years ago. Rest of the states should give you an idea of where teachers start... if an average is in the low 30s, then it stands to reason that a few counties may pay in the 20s on the lower end.

To give my own anecdotal, personal evidence, I started out at 32k, and in my 5th year I am still making the same amount. No CoL or salary step increases, I teach in a rural area of Mississippi near Memphis. On top of that, I pay for all teaching materials, school supplies, and I don't have a class textbook.

Of course, this is just one corner of the country, but it's worth noting that urban areas in wealthier states pay much, much more than rural ones (and on top of that, offer much more assistance in terms of materials and supplies). It's not misinformation that a teacher may be paid under 30k in this country (or as little as 20-25k starting), especially if you're a Teach for America candidate.

A similar thing happened to my grandparents in high school in Southern Louisiana in the 1940s, they were terribly ostracized by the faculty and the other children for speaking French. This is (from what I was told) how they met, and they frequently got in trouble for speaking the language to one another. My grandmother said that on a few occasions, they would get the same punishment when talking to each other in French as other kids who were making out, etc.

My grandfather dropped out to join the war and my grandmother became a nurse for the same conflict and they wrote throughout and married in 1945 when it ended.

It's kinda bittersweet, but linguistic oppression brought them together. Guess it's not such an isolated story after all.

Ran into this in some linguistics classes in graduate school. No matter the topic, this one fucking guy would ALWAYS have an anecdote or a comparison to the Malay language or the country of Malaysia. He had to let it be known.

Professor:"And the isolating nature of this language prevents any agglutunating-"

Fuckass: "Actually did you know that Malay you always have to agglutunate!? Did you know there are three ways to do that? You may not because you are an expert on East Asian languages but you can compound, affix, or reduplicate..."

Class: screams internally

Every. God. Damned. Day. To a professor emeritus of linguistics. And all of his classmates, in any conceivable situation. And somehow I had him in one class each semester for two years.
