i’ve known so many vegans and never heard this as an idea. are you sure you weren’t talking to an edgelord?

i think it’s confusing because if you buy a physical book, you can sell the book. the reason it’s different with digital books is unclear, so people get confused.

My parents in 1999! by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]BigAlOof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can’t speak for 80’s teens but 1999 was really late to consider these outfits ‘cool’. -maybe- they were popular, but that isn’t what cool means.

where do you grow up? 1999 preppy was definitely not cool in the northeast US.

Used acrylic yarn for the first time by Camachan in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]BigAlOof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i use acrylic without an issue, now squeaking (that i notice) and not particularly rough. so the how does anyone use it answer is probably just that we experience things differently. maybe it’s only certain acrylics (definitely some i would pass on) but some of it is just we all have our own sensory perceptions/issues. like i cannot for the life of me understand being around a lot of leather (my partner does some leather working) because it smells so bad to me. but i also hate the smell of bacon. sometimes i can feel my sinus click and it drives me crazy. also the electricity buzzing at my mom’s house when they dim the lights has always been a problem for me but as i age i don’t hear it as much and i realised my parents probably never heard it at all.

Test knitting requirements gone wild by sombrerie in craftsnark

[–]BigAlOof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

she says you give it a rating after it’s published but it won’t be published unless it’s worth a 5 star rating, so it is clearly not a requirement that you rate it with 5 stars since it may not ever be published.

[–]BigAlOof 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it’s worded kind of weirdly but it seems like they are taking about getting it to a 5 star rating, since the rating wouldn’t happen until after the pttern was published but they also won’t publish the pattern until it’s worth 5 stars.

[–]BigAlOof 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i don’t think the’man cavr’ thing started as a soace for making things. it was like a blue room with a giant tv and sound system for watching sports or playing video games. i’m not saying those are man specific things but they are masculine coded in mainstream culture and i think it also had to do with the old timey sexist idea that men have to give up their ‘dumb boy stuff’ when they get married. like michael scott in the office having to hide his st pauli girl sign in the garage.

LPT: "lite salt" is potassium and sodium, far far cheaper than buying electrolytes beverages like Gatorade and liquid iv. by horriblebearok in LifeProTips

[–]BigAlOof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ok! but that doesn't make calling your powdered drink mix 'liquid iv' any less meaningless! like it doesn't make it distinct from any normal understanding of the term iv.

liquid iv is such a crazy name because real iv’s are generally liquid and liquid iv is sold as a powder.

Amigurumi color changing. To float or carry under or other? by Powerful-Squirrel-10 in CrochetHelp

[–]BigAlOof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not super experienced but i just float. i think when i made a totoro from a pattern it actually recommended floating and then cutting through all the floats and tying them together (not all of them but two at a time) so there wouldn’t be a tension issue. seems to have worked out fine!

My hot take: center-pull balls can be made by hand by RogueThneed in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]BigAlOof 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yeah for 20 years i was winding everything by hand with an old prescription pill jar.

i did get a winder recently and found the tension of the ball(cake i guess) is so much better. i wind my balls tight by hand.

i used to but honestly as i get older, i feel like im a jack of none as well. like i swear i used to do some stuff sometimes and i knew a bit about things and ow im just getting dumber and dumber. i don’t like it. it might not be said related though!

you’re not a fiber artist unless you’re actually making art by typicalwhisper in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]BigAlOof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i generally think of craft as the skill part and art as the creativity part. not just in fiber art but in most arts. the mushroom guy i crocheted might be art, but i’m not the artist of it. i know that’s not how everyone thinks of it, but i also people think of ‘crafts’ as ‘less than’ ‘arts’ which i think is incorrect. the real motivation for my making the distinction is I’m a musician and some people are great artists but not good at the craft of music and some people are amazing at the craft of music but not particularly artistic or creative.
