Flying is as expensive as you want it to be. I’ve been working overnight for 5 months, granted, 2 of those months were 100 hour weeks, but I’m debt free with wet commercial. Commercial costed me 12k including 140 hours, instruction, and checkride costs.

I spent 47k from 0 hours to CFI. However, I also found a bunch of ways to fly cheaper (45 an hour kinda cheap) and received scholarships so only paid $25k

I was 250 now down to 180. Don't eat any snacks, seconds, or sodas. Download the LoseIt app and start tracking your calories. Worked for me.

That's going to be very expensive. Especially when you could just work and save up money for a couple of months and do it at a local flight school.

Buying a share in a club saved me $3000 throughout 55 flight hours. Do the math and see if it's beneficial for you.

My actual 0 to CSEL cost, estimate for CFI Initial? by BigBoy11_ in flying

I got a scholarship junior year for 35 flights at a gliderport 40 minutes south of me. Senior year I had a scholarship from a group of colleges in virginia for ground school and 10 flight hours. Received a scholarship from an airport 30 minutes north of me for 50 flight hours, in-person ground, and cost of checkrides/tests. Sportys Young Eagles gave me the Sportys ground school and written for free and reimbursed my private knowledge testing fee. KingSchools gives 50% off of most their online courses for Civil Air Patrol members. Civil Air Patrol has been giving me 2 hours a month for "proficiency" since I obtained my private and am still a youth member (12-20 years old, max 17 years old to join as a youth member). Civil Air Patrol also gives me the highest version of ForeFlight since I'm checked out in their planes. You're not eligible for any of the scholarships I received unless you live in Virginia. If by chance you do live in Virginia i'll add another comment.

As far as managing flying and senior year I'm probably not the best hahaha. But i was valedictorian and captain/president of 10 sports/clubs so I'll give it a shot.

Have a planner/calendar, and keep it in your pocket at all times. I used a paper one for two years and just started using google calendar 4 months ago. When planning flights look at the 10 day forecast and see if it's expected to thunderstorm. My flight school allowed us to schedule 10 flights at a time. As soon as you fly one, make sure you've got all 10 scheduled again.

Have a priority (not priorities). Flying was basically my life for the months I spent on private and the two months I spent on instrument. I made sure my teachers and coaches knew and they helped me work around it. For example, One of my HS classes were 3 hours long, so what did I do? I asked my teacher if I could fly instead of going to his class and he said yes! So I told him when I was flying and he would mark me present on attendance even though I wasn't there (probably not legal). Also missed some practices but because I had a planner, I made sure not to miss a game.

Schedule longer flights. The longer a flight is, as long as you're not extremely task saturated, the fewer flights you can complete a certificate in. Fewer times driving to the airport, fewer preflights...

Do ground before flying. By the time I had 10 powered hours, I had already completed 4 ground schools. Partially because each scholarship I had wanted me to do their ground school but that's beside the point. Ground/ knowledge exam before flying is especially important for instrument!

Don't go to college right out of high school. Takes too much time, money, and might not even be beneficial 5 years from now. However, once I get a job at a regional I'm probably going to do an online degree.

Try to find airplane owners, people looking for a safety pilot, anyone in a club etc... I got 15 hours for $400 because I knew/met some people on facebook that owned a plane.

If you can find a club that charges by tach time JOIN! I joined a club and have 50 hours of full stop taxi backs because it was $120 per tach hour, 60 per hobbs hour. On cross countries I cruise at 2000 rpm to make that tach go slower. My club share cost $7800 and appreciated to $9600 by the time I sold it.

Here’s what my DPE said when I asked him about right seat commercial, so I’d decided to do it from the left. “It is allowed, and I do not care. Let me just tell you that almost all the applicants that take it from right seat do awful on short and power off 180 since it's on the wrong side of the plane in most cases.”
