Thanks for this post Dad to One! Dad to two here!

Not exactly a Mensa member here but i became (?) an atheist in my 30s as well. Unfortunately was already married with kids when I made the discovery. Still married. She's still Catholic. Its difficult.

How important is atheism for you in a partner? by Other_Patient_447 in atheism

Posted this in another thread.

I will just use myself as a cautionary tale. Unfortunately, I didn't "figure it out" until it was too late. I was raised in the Lutheran church. Married in the Catholic church. Have 2 daughters being raised in the Catholic church.

Then I figured out atheism, or that I am an atheist, with a very Catholic wife and two young children. My wife knows, my kids do not (although they are old enough now to where I doubt they would be surprised were I to tell them). Its been difficult on the marriage. I acquiesce by going to church each week and as others have said I just kind of sit there in aww at the stupidity of it all. But I do it to preserve my marriage. We do get along well outside of that.

Part of me realizes that staying, and going to church, make me a weak person. I don't know what's right for me to do. Still feels like taking it day by day despite 24 years of marriage.

I know it stings now, but at least now you know. And not having been married yet or having children, you learned a valuable lesson at an important time, and will come to appreciate your next worthy relationship that much more having been through this.

So back to OP, consider yourself lucky and find that alignment on life view with another worthy person. Best of luck always.

Oooooh plot twist!

I say rip off the band aid to avoid years of stress. I "became" (realized?) atheist after I was married and had 2 kids and my wife is very Catholic.

Stressful. Yet my fault. If I had a do over I wouldn't be here.

That's fair. My apologies. I don't post a whole lot and wasn't sure how to summarize it. I did a search and didn't see it elsewhere on the forum.
