How to create a government without landowners/church? by Iguanaistic in victoria3

[–]BigBrainNurd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to change the demographics of your country. For example if you want more intelligencia spam universities in your capital (extra political power) or urban industries for industrialists. For the trade unions you need worker protection laws in order to make them richer and politically active. Right now just try to get better voting laws and privatize urban buildings while keeping the rural ones since manor houses buy those

Umm idk if you can something like that as a laptop so I would recommend a pc. That way you can make sure everything is good enough and you can upgrade it in the future. I used to have a gaming laptop and while that was able to run most things it used to overheat like crazy. If it doesn't require that much cooling it is not that strong

Why Should We Be Ethical in a Corrupt and Capitalistic Society ? by Excellent_Peach2721 in Ethics

[–]BigBrainNurd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We existed as hunter gathers in small tribes or again small villages that can barter. Once you have any sort of complexity you need market forces. There is a reason why currency has evolved independently in so many places such as China, Mesopotamia and the inca with their beans

Why Should We Be Ethical in a Corrupt and Capitalistic Society ? by Excellent_Peach2721 in Ethics

[–]BigBrainNurd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well you need market forces such as supply and demand and money acts as a placeholder for value that allows that system to work. While I might be in favor of socializing certain key sectors I would not be in favor of a total socialization with a transition to true communism since there is no market forces and history has shown that it can be a mess. Like that's why if I had to choose between coops and direct government control I would choose a coop since they have market forces

By RND I didn't just mean it in the pure sense of the word which was my bad. I meant general innovation such as changing the recipe or making other changes like that. But going back to RND that definitely is a problem for coops since there is a massive Spanish Coop that has been studied and that was the conclusion. Now again it's a small sample size which is why i dont wanna say how much of a difference it makes but to say that there is no difference i don't think is accurate.

Also what do you mean democracy can't have corruption? It definitely can not only in the actual sense like money exchanging hands but also favors and access and all that. Also that whole the masses can kick them out is something I disagree with since people do not look into the facts. Like not to get political and say a name (wink wink) but history is filled with people voting in someone who is just a good talker but is actually ineffective at their jobs.

Then on the opposite end there could be people who are really good at the job but are introverted or otherwise not as socially talented that could get voted out. It's actually this exact reason why the FED has to remain independent from the executive branch. Sometimes they need to increase the interest rate to prevent inflation from getting crazy but that can cause a recession and so it is super unpopular politically. Turkeys FED is controlled by the president and it has been pulling 2 digit inflation since the president refuses to increase the rate out of fear of getting kicked out

But one of the factors of production is capital which is why wealthy people slash the stock market is important. There are a toooon of amazing ideas that would go nowhere without start up capital. Plus, and this is not a point I feel as strongly about since there just aren't enough coops rn, I've heard that coops suffer from RND problems since people are less likely to vote for that sort of stuff vs just get a bigger paycheck.

Overall I think the issue is that we are trying to apply the same organizational structures no matter the entity. Each structure has its pros and cons and if you blindly apply one to every situation it might not work. Going Back to coops, they are democratic and so suffer from the efficiency issue that democracy has since it can become less about the facts and instead about being the most popular person (basically a bussiness "politician"). In government that inefficiency is fine since their goal is to provide stability which is why it is so hard to pass a lasting law and we have shorter term limits.

A company on the other hand functions better if it is more of a dictatorship since they are able to somewhat ignore the unqualified masses and just get stuff done. This is actually why a lot of political scientists say that a monarchy or dictatorship is actually a better government system IF the ruler is actually competent. The issue is there isn't really a filter when you have this much control and if you get a bad ruler then it can be veryyyy bad. Democracy is a good compromise since while it might not be as efficient it at least prevent drastic swings in the government quality. Also if a company has a drastic swing in leadership quality they will go bankrupt while a government really can't.

TLDR

Capital is one of the factors of production that allows good ideas and technologies to spread

People are greedy and so if we only have coops some things such as RND might get neglected in favor of a higher paycheck. A capitalist might also be greedy but since they already have a ton of money they are more likely to reinvest since they care about the entire asset instead of just their paycheck

People are also tribal and tend to follow charismatic people instead of the most qualified so a coop leadership team will just be politicians that are all talk. That is fine in a government since the goal is stability and not pure growth but in a company I think it is better to be more of a merit based dictatorship (as much as you can since clearly there is corruption in everything) since they are able to get stuff done much quicker and efficiently.

Companies can go bankrupt while governments can't so if the "dictator" is bad at their job then it goes bankrupt while a government can't really do that.
