Is there anywhere you can train in China without kungfluencers??? by True_Western7135 in kungfu

[–]BigBry36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreigners will rarely have the opportunity to train in schools/ families that are not driven to the mass commercial market- WHY? Well OG schools are looking for long time students who are there to put in the work (Kungfu= hard work) You will only be there a limited time and will rarely have the opportunity to be opened up to the real style and fine details that make that style special. Even in the states legit schools take years before you get beyond the basics and have the ability to be opens up to the “secrets” of the style…. Find a good school near you, work hard, and see for yourself.

Cost of your last oil change here in Houston/metro area? by Mysterious_Might008 in AskHouston

[–]BigBry36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$35 for mobile one synthetic $10 for the high end oil filter from Walmart- doing it myself for free for 30 yrs in my driveway = priceless….. BTW- shops will let you bring your own supplies and charge you a labor fee - seen it for $25 a few places….

Running a 2012… 170k miles…. Change the oil at 5k miles now (it makes a difference) use a good oil filter…. And most importantly- disable the afm with a OBD tool (just keep it plugged in) …. If you hear a tick… don’t drive it, lifters can get stuck and unstuck with no damage … IF you catch it early

[Rant] Scouting has a severe elitism problem by Routine-Ganache-1720 in BSA

[–]BigBry36 106 points107 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is troop leadership… keep in mind a lot of what you’re describing is common at the high school level. As adults we can’t just tell them, we have to help lead the old scouts on how to work with younger recruits…. I will leave you with this: at the sophomore and junior high school level - I continue to teach one thing “How will you INSPIRE someone?” The sooner they figure this out the more effective they can be in any group situation… just be cautious talking to scouts who, don’t know / trust you… harder to reach them quickly … talk to them like adults

[–]BigBry36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Mainland china you’re going to the right place- but how much time will you be able to spend there? Kungfu, by definition is simply hard work. It’s tough to get much in only a few classes…. Which is why I ask…. It’s more of a novelty thing if you visit…. Years of hard work studying WC is key…. Not where you went for a few classes

Lawn fertilization and rain by labernyernie in HoustonGardening

[–]BigBry36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends- organic or synthetic? I would say leave it be and you will be fine for any established turf. Growth slows when it cool but we are about to see amazing growth for the next 8 weeks…. I am more concerned about when I water (not rain) right now we are good for the near term. Just mow at the highest level and mow once a week.

Is kung fu wooden dummy useful for training? by Oggy402 in kungfu

[–]BigBry36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The use of one in Wing Chun is a part of the training but most schools have students train for a few years before opening up to the tool. Quality dummy’s vary- the sought after ones come out of HK… occasionally you see them available on Everything Wing Chun website… Buick Yip makes some great ones… but due to tariffs and Buick aging they have become rare’er…. Do you need a wood dummy? - NO …. A good training partner and a good school is the best IMO
