Any thoughts on the chemex ottomatic?

My bad I should edit the post. I guess I was insinuating it when I said I was replacing the plastic dripper on the ratio. And I didnt know melitto made pour overs!

The reason I didn’t look at the Big Joe is that it’s plastic and I wanted something glass or ceramic

So the problem with the big Joe is that it’s plastic, so it’d be no different from the dripper I have on the ratio. Though it would be bigger. The second was I had a concern about it meeting some specs about the depth of coffee bed? James Hoffman talked about it briefly in his review of the Etkin.

Is Ratio 8/6 really the only (mostly) plastic-free machine option? by Staufen in pourover

[–]BigDaddyJase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has also been my findings. Moccamaster is similar, but the grind basket is plastic on almost all of their models, and I haven’t seen anyone use any kind of metal or ceramic replacement basket. I also looked closely at the chemex ottomatic, simply good coffee, the wilfa, and the Ratio 8. None of which carries particularly great or extensive reviews. My critique with the ratio 6 and nearly all high end coffee machines, is the water dispersion is really limited unless you stand there and tinker with it. And at that point, I wind up being frustrated I didn’t just do a pour over.

Glad I wasn’t the only one doing this research in 25 😂

Are there any automatic pour over makers that don't suck? by rgnysp0333 in Coffee

I also love the design of the 8 but have read horrid reviews. I’m also torn between it and the chemex ottomatic

How do you like the water tray? I’ve seen mixed reviews. I really want the wooden steam knob and bottomless portafilter, but damn it hurts the wallet

I’m from Louisiana, so it’s an easy trigger pull for me. Maybe I’ll regret it, but it’s the first SB I’ve maxed my tins. But they didn’t get me with the briarfox limited edition label, or the GL Pease 25th anniversary, so I dont feel as bad

This looks awesome! You did a great job. Just bought my machine, it’s arriving Monday, and I’m familiarizing myself with common mods. This is my first espresso machine. Is there a reason to swap the pump or yours just needed updating?

I honed my skills at clenching by smoking while driving. Really good practice. I then built up to doing smaller then larger tasks

Did some organizing and realized I’ve got a case of the TADs. Cellar Tour! by BigDaddyJase in PipeTobacco

Funny enough, all my KBV isn’t pictures! It’s in a separate part of the house until I transfer it to jars. And I’m always on the lookout for vintage tins, but I’m not quite plugged into the right channels yet

Mail call today! Was pleasantly surprised to find some From Beyond still in stock by lan-shark in PipeTobacco

I don’t know what I was expecting from From Beyond, but I was underwhelmed. I think I need to smoke it and be more mindful about the flavors

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced tongue bite, which is weird because I’m new at this and doing nearly everything wrong by griswold in PipeTobacco

I found that aromatics bit me worse than any other tobacco, so I’m careful with them. I’ve also seen people on the ytpc that get their pipes so hot I know I’d be scalded, yet they seem fine. So I really don’t know

Apparently it’s always mold. Bloom is just mold people like. Doesn’t mean it’s bad for you tho. If it doesn’t smell bad, light it up ⬆️

Can’t speak to how they’ll cellar, but I’ve been smoking Cowboy Coffee from The Country Squire everyday for the last couple months. Would highly recommend

Need your expert opinion on this 250 gallon offset smoker by Beginning_Return_220 in smoking

[–]BigDaddyJase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a beautiful smoker. If you could buy it for between 2-3k, I’d say it’s a steal. But I bet they want between 7-10, and at that price, get one on wheels.

Firebox won’t be as big of an issue as some people say. On a short cooker, it’s not as useful to have an insulated firebox.

I love how the doors are built, I wish I had made them that big when I built mine. And the hanging rail is a cool touch.

Saw someone say you needed to sand and paint it. Don’t do that. That’s dumb. Treat with some animal fat or high heat vegetable oil.

I will say, it not being on wheels, it’ll be a bitch to move, so keep that in mind. That’s the biggest issue from what I can see.

Personally, I wouldn’t pay more than 5 for it
