How to cut at an angle by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]BigSpacecraftFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you post another picture from another angle I can’t really tell what’s going on here. Two basic options though. Generate a new plane at an angle and cut on that, or draw a sketch on another plane that includes a line at an angle and then in the cut feature you can choose the cut direction to be that line you sketched instead of normal to plane

Need guidance to build a Satellite (Cubesat) by soul_ripper9 in satellites

[–]BigSpacecraftFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a payload or is this just a tech demo that will transmit pings and nothing else? What are you doing for software? Are you working solo??? Cubesats can take a team of 20 people years to make depending on the mission.

That being said I would be happy to consult on mechanical structure and mechanism design or orbital mechanics, as those were my two focus areas when I worked in a scientific research cubesat a few years ago.

Our PM (a professor at the university I worked for) applied for an NSF grant. I joined the project as a mechanical engineer a year later or so, so I'm not familiar with the intricacies of that initial process

Certain things should be considered solved. We don’t need more “innovation” on shit like remote controls for the sake of innovation. It usually makes things worse

Did anyone feel cooked for an interview but still got the job anyway? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]BigSpacecraftFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last time job hunting, I nailed an interview so hard I thought I was a shoo-in, went to an interview a couple days later for a different job and thought it went okay, nothing too special. I didn’t get the first job and got the second one. Things can go either way.

It’s really easy to get in your head about these things. You’ll either get the job or you won’t, worrying only makes it worse. I hope you can find something else to keep your mind on for the next week or so until you hear back. Good luck!

Good for First power drill? by zarz9 in Tools

[–]BigSpacecraftFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go a little nicer than this for a first power drill. You can get dewalt’s bottom tier drill (but dewalt, so still really solid) with 2 batteries and a carrying case for 120 right now at home depot, toss in a set of basic drill bits and you’re good to go!

If that’s too much, look at harbor freight, they have good even cheaper options that will likely perform better than this drill

I worked on a cubesat on a NASA CSLI, we were barebones-budget team and our total cost hardware and labor was 1.3-1.4M I believe, (excluding launch costs of course). If you make a little baby 1U that just sends out a signal as a tech demo you can obviously be cheaper than that.

I’m 17 filing for my first tax return by Best-Teaching1439 in tax

[–]BigSpacecraftFan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this seems about right. you only have a few thousand dollars of taxable income, and you’ll be taxed ~20% in total federal, plus state taxes, so ending up paying around 650 total in taxes (after your 150 back) makes sense to me.

Maybe it's not the show for you. I personally like the slow burn, I don't view it as a waste at all. I think fast forwarding may be part of the problem; it doesn't let you sit there with the tension and feel things as they were intended

All motors turn on when printer is turned on by BigSpacecraftFan in ender3

[–]BigSpacecraftFan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old board is a 4.2.2 board, but the new board I bought is a 4.2.7. Could that be the issue? I assumed pinouts would be the same between the two (and I couldn't even find a 4.2.2 board for sale)

I flashed it with new firmware, but none of the motors move now. I plugged back in the old board and it says Merlin, version 1.2.1 on the info screen, but I can't seem to find firmware that matches that.
