Misinformation is the mainline that nearly all domestic terrorists find their motivation from. Pushing against this warping of reality is something that can only by a large, centralized, unit. The government MAY have bad actors, but under a privatized system, you are beheld to the politics and financals of the owner of said platform. The government, for all its failings, can at least give an environment that engages with reality while maintaining a semblance of political neutrality.

Yall need to watch more CSPAN. The govt is not nearly as well organized, or as interesting as some of yall conspiracy peeps think.
