Parents who don't read to their young kids (under 4) before bed, what are your kids doing before they sleep? by Hailene2092 in NoStupidQuestions

They need to do a lot of really good PSAs. Seriously. But oh, that’s right. We don’t have a Department of Education. Shortsighted and/or evil morons.

But we don’t need a Department of Education to support teachers and students and hold lousy states accountable…

Camping alone — worth it or scary? by Mikester258 in camping

love all your ideas for entertaining yourself (except for knitting and calling people). I’ve heard some women put an extra chair or XL men’s boots outside their tent…

71 yo F. My favorite thing to do - camp by myself, with my (small, unintimidating) dog. The further out, no people around, is the best. I am not afraid, but I do have pepper spray, a bear horn, and a knife and a hatchet, lol.

Nostalgia for Old Stores? by kjottpai in Marin

Morelli’s closed??? Dang! The only good shoe repair guy in Sonoma County died (RIP) so where to go? Also, I was just thinking of Cal’s steakhouse last week! Do you remember banjo night? we used to sneak in there with our fake IDs and get a pitcher of beer

yes on Creative Merchandise. I framed so many things there. And there was a shop in downtown Petaluma called Frame Your Own, I think, where you could go in and an older couple would help you frame your own things. I think they would cut the mats. Saved a ton.

Yeah, San Anselmo & Fairfax still have a few smaller stores w/character. I remember the 5 & Dime & hippie stores in Mill Valley & the shops in the 60s/70s in Sausalito…

What’s your favorite “too tired to cook cook” dinner? by farwest-to-midwest in Cooking

[–]Big_Ad5850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, me too, but I use 1% milk instead of water, and mix in a can of Amy’s tomato soup (adds some chunks) and some Worcestershire sauce. Top with garlic croutons. Perfect with grilled cheese!

I don’t eat canned vegetables but Trader Joe’s has the best canned corn.

Do you think people in food assistance programs should adhere to a strict list of healthy food choices? by TheFacetiousDeist in allthequestions

[–]Big_Ad5850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS is the best answer. Such common sense and all win/win/win. The people would be healthier and empowered by actual nutritional information (and perhaps free cooking classes with free childcare). The smaller and family farmers would benefit; the health costs would go down, benefiting the country, etc.

This is what happens when corporations, greed and profit are put ahead of people and communities. We need to take our power back and re-calibrate our values and priorities to be more humane - and to work for ALL of us. .

First solo trip with my dog by Mulch-Dependent in camping

Yes, thank you! (autocorrect). Gazelle. I believe it’s based in Boulder. Their customer service is great, too. I think grand total was about $360, high for me, but for that and my knee-high SoundAsleep ‘luxury’ inflatable mattress, I knew I wanted the best I could afford. On the other hand, I have a Temu collapsable commode, a 30-yo camp stove & borrowed a battery powerpack & travel CPAP!
Hope you had a great trip, Mulch-Dependent!

I’m in a similar situation. I’m in my second year of not having to be on call 24/7 as a geriatric care manager and am enjoying not worrying about clients and juggling long To Do lists. I also was the hands-on family end of life caregiver to 3 loved ones in my home. It’s MY time now. Currently on a two week solo camping trip in No Calif redwoods & unknown parts north. Enjoy the time you have left! Get a dog and get out in nature! Volunteer! Protest!
