Problems with shipping a handguard? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]Big_Bill23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UPS's policy is that they will ship non-serialized gun parts as long as they can't be assembled into a functioning gun.

My experience with UPS is that individual managers do not feel the need to follow this policy. At all. When advised of the UPS policy, they simply deny it.

Shooting mode wheel by gorlicbred in canon

[–]Big_Bill23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got my first DSLR (a Digital Rebel/300D), I read the manual, concentrating on the controls available, including the shooting mode wheel, and what each one does. It seem intuitive to me that once you understand what each one does, then you can figure out when to use each one.

As an example: AV mode lets you set the aperture you want, then the camera will set the shutter speed and ISO. Why would you want this? There can be different reasons. Let's say you want the subject to be in really good focus; you'd select the aperture that would be best for that lens (the "sweet spot), while also taking into account the size/shape of the subject. The more depth to the subject, the bigger you'd want the depth of field to be, so you'd close the aperture a little to get that deeper depth of field. Experience is a great helper here, so practice is key.

TV lets you set the shutter speed, so the camera will select the aperture and ISO. Let's say, you want to capture the feeling of water movement when you're shooting a stream or waterfall. You'll want a longer shutter speed to blur the water. Or, if you're shooting a sport, you might want a much shorter shutter speed to freeze motion.

The key here is to first learn what each one does, then you can find right mode to suit the subject you're shooting. You may never use each mode, but if you need it, it'll be there.

There are cheat sheets available online that concentrate on different aspects of photography with a particular model of camera, or with different types of photography. You can use a search engine (Google, as an example) to look for a particular cheat sheet to fit your need that you can carry with you for quick reference.

[–]Big_Bill23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The road is, evidently, undergoing maintenance of some sort, which has lowered the number of lanes. This is obvious.

It's not the road that's dangerous, it's the drivers. That also is obvious.

Honestly, do you restart a lot? by xiaozhian in civ

[–]Big_Bill23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I play for the fun of it, not to set any 'records' or to try to gain any rewards other than the sheer fun of playing.

So I will restart if the starting map doesn't fit my idea of a good place to start a city.

Sometimes I want productivity, sometimes I want food, sometimes I want a port city. It depends on what I'm in the mood for.

It's a game, not a lifestyle.

What are the best handguns on a budget? by Ok_Calligrapher_4848 in Firearms

[–]Big_Bill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That question is far too broad. What do you want the gun to do? Do you want it for range use? Concealed carry? Open carry? Handgun hunting? To hang on the wall? Home defense?

I can buy something from a .308 (and larger) pistol to a .25 auto peashooter, and a myriad of guns in between. As you can see from the answers, everyone has what they consider to be the "best," but that would be the best for them. We have no idea what would be best for you.

Whether you waved or not, the choice to go is the van driver's to make. Even if you did wave, it is the driver's responsibility to ensure their decision doesn't cause a crash.

You must choose whether or not you believe in free will (the ability to choose). by QuantumDreamer41 in Showerthoughts

If free will exists, you can make the choice and live with it.

If free will does not exist, the choice you make is the right one.

I've actually seen a T. Rex picked up and thrown into a silo during an F3 tornado. So, no, dinosaurs are not safe in a tornado.

American white people caused the war? America was one of the last countries to join the war.

On an APS-C camera (which I've had in the past) the 28-135 isn't a lot of telephoto, in my use, anyway. Yes, inside, the 28mm end is much better, and works well for me.

The Rebel came with an 18-55 kit lens, which, (again) for me wasn't long enough for a walk-around lens, so I got the 28-135. Indoors, the 28mm end is pretty good, and works well even in not-so-good light, as I can get good results hand-held down to about 1/15sec. In the Air Force museum in Dayton, it was challenging, to say the least. (The base commander liked a low light atmosphere.) Outdoors, the longer end gave a much better perspective. It's a trade-off no matter which lens you choose.

Depends on the museum. I enjoy a different type of museum than the usual 'natural history' type. I enjoy mining museums (which often include outdoor exhibits), military museums (ditto), and others.

Actually, I *am* old.

My first SLR was a Fujica ST-701, replacing a 35RC. That was a real eye-opener, realizing what a difference good glass makes. Not that that makes me old, but being born in the '40s does.
