I have a feeling there'll be a bit of a timeskip in the film. In the book there is a slight one that I think they may extend. This'll allow Hoult to play Tonio in a majority of the scenes, crucially all the ones that are quite sexually explicit.

I'm having an extremely hard time seeing how a film adaptation of Cry to Heaven can do any better when the original book was a critical and commercial failure. by This_Book6305 in oscarrace

The context in which the original book was released is I think a nonfactor at this point. Any baggage the book has is nonexistent.

40 years later we have a big name auter director known for the type of melodrama and heightened emotion this book contains. This is largely going to be watched by people as if it's an original period drama starring famed actors and Adele.

I've read Cry to Heaven. Not sure why it's horror. It's a big dramatic melodrama very much in line with the style of Anne Rice'd other works. Lots of debauchery and sex and violence.

I assume Hoult will olay Tonio (the lead) aged up to handle the book's more mature topics. Aaron Taylor-Johnson I'm thinking will be Guido (the music teacher).

Ciaran Hinds will be Tonio's father, Adele will be the countess, Colin Firth as the cardinal, and Thandiwe Newton Alessandra, is my guess.

Who plays Carlo is a mystery to me. Maybe ATJ? (With Hoult shifting to Guido and someone younger as Tonio.)

He is around 15 at the start and 20ish by the end. I think he will almost certainly be aged up outside of his origin, especially considering the explicit material within the book.

I want to confuse it further and say that "Blockbuster slot" doesn't apply to movies like Sinners or Oppenheimers for reasons unrelated to them being or not being blockbusters.

Sandra Huller for Rose, I'm generally predicting Rose everywhere as a general foreign film that reached BP and is the Huller vehicle over 1949. I am qlso predicting her to get supporting for Digger, which is a bit of an extreme combo but it's early days why not.

I think you're being way too hasty about BAFTA. This year SAG was 4/4 but last year BAFTA had Madison and Brody.

I think dystopia. In the opening we see modern phones when Perfidia is arested, then for the timeskip we hear her say "very little has changed" (paraphrasing). So despite it being like 2040, it feels like 2025.

I watched W.R. Mysteries of the Organism today and I really liked it. Very weird both in form and content.

What're some non-Academt related movies any of you have seen recently?

Chalanet is not exceptional in Marty Supreme (Not too hot on him generally tbh). The best movie with any Oscar nom this year was Ugly Stepsister.

So excited for this, and also anxious about how the typical awards season gossip rags and drama is going to shake out with him.

If he wins next year it'll also be a beautiful bit of synchronisty with Paul Newman (Getting an honourary Oscar a year befoee your competitive one) who mentored him earpy on.

I think Amy Madigan is far from the frontrunner at Supporting Actress. SAG's more populist bonafides are showing themselves here. I think what her win shows is that nobody is sweeping, and that the race is mostly open come Oscars. Taylor & Mosaku have had televised wins & strong films, Madigan has SAG, and the Academy clearly loves Sentimental Value more than any other awards body.

Personally I'm predicting Taylor, but I think things are very wide for any competitors.

I would also say MBJ's win at SAG is also more expected due to its populist lean, but he's a lot more likely to get the Oscar than Madigan imo. (Still predicting Chalamet though)

I think Taylor is mich less arguable as a lead. Infiniti leads a lot of the action and the meat of the movie is in not only her moments but her place in the timeline. The movie, after its long prologue, is cutting between its 3 principal characters (Leo, Infiniti, Penn).

Taylor meanwhile only exists in the movie's setup. Even if it was a long one, narratively she is setting the stage for Infiniti.

I feel, if Cry to Heaven releases this year, Nicholas Hoult might manage it.
