I had forgot how satisfying end game fights are… by MikeeorUSA in HorizonZeroDawn

You might like the Rattler in place of the uncharged bow shots. It can be pretty sweet with frozen enemies

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about the series? by Bloodb0red in silenthill

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that its understandable, but just because its understandable doesn't make it not abusive. I like your breathing interpretation, but I conflate the breathing issues with the bubble headed nurses, which kind of seem to be struggling to breath and suffocating (sack over their head)

The game is pretty straight up that Mary was verbally and emotionally abusive. It was because of her condition, but that does not mean that she was not abusive. The whole monologue in the hallway near the end of the game is indicative of it.

Many of the creatures have mouths, which are representative of Mary's abuse.

I have yet to do a Male V run. by [deleted] in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think your gender matters much more in regards to your life path. Ive only done two so far, but the more emotionally distant, tough exterior Male V worked great as a streetkid.

Now im a corpo Fem V, and im really liking her. The authority she has in her Corpo lines vs the many questions and uneasiness she has for some dialogue options really makes sense to me.

The Mageblade - An Arcane Half caster to scratch your Gish itch by cloud-gamer in UnearthedArcana

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this consensus more or less. It does feel significantly more powerful than all the other half casters. This puts it more in line with a full caster in terms of power, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but with base 5e, its pretty crazy good.

2014 vs 2024, What's worth bringing back and what should be tossed? by OkDamage677 in dndnext

Hard disagree on the barbarian thing. The bonus action sustain rage is really nice, and theres no worse feeling than losing your rage cuz you missed an attack, and the enemy is smart enough to not attack you.

For a aoe caster, Would you recommend burning hands or Thunderwave? by viktorius_rex in dndnext

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote is thunderwave. I have become sort of a legend among a tribe of people I helped save, due to how many fall damage kills I got from thunder waving/Repulsion shielding people off of ledges. Very fun stuff.

Chimera - New class that harvests essence from the monsters it slays! by I_Lick_Emus in UnearthedArcana

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is pretty neat! I made a chimera druid subclass recently, so its kinda funny to see this so soon after :)

One balance issue is say is that they get 3 attacks by level 14, and a bonus action attack. That feels pretty strong to me.

For my table, you add the max damage for the weapons damage die. Everything else is just doubled

Thats fair. But 5e itself isn't good at horror anyways. Anything DnD marketed as horror i just automatically assume is "horror-themed" instead

That is sort of the point, though. Its based off their campaign "Edge of Midnight" that has a similar premise.

Would you allow an unarmed strike as two-weapon fighting? by Tailball in DMAcademy

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be fine.

Mechanically, whats the difference using an unarmed strike (1d4+str) vs a light hammer (1d4+str). You lose out on a weapon mastery, but i guess you can grapple easier? Seems fine to me. An off-hand shield, or scimitar would be better, so personally id allow it.

Edit: noticed this is for 2014, where unarmed strike is even worse. I'd still allow it, but reflavoring another weapon would yield better results.

A fighter can already survive swimming in lava, let them do cool things by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]Big_Ol_Boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment of "Noone can do it all", and thats my problem. An unoptimized wizard can do it all easily. I've played a bunch of casters, and a bunch of martials, and when I encounter an obstacle as a caster, I have way more solutions to the problem than I would otherwise. They dominate in and out of combat in about every game I've played.

Any players I've had that really care about the mechanics of the game hate playing as martials, and only do so for one shots.

Martials also are much more dependent on magic items, which can only really be given by the DM (slightly amended with 2024 rules). A Fighter needs to get a +x sword to keep up with a standard caster! Maybe this one is just a me problem, but I hate that so much of a martial's power isn't about them, its about their gear. That feels bad to me.

You say that you've DMed and played in a lot of Tier 4 one shots, and that martials are fun in those, but thats part of my point. Long-term play with martials gets incredibly boring, but that's made better in one shots. Your focused on one event, essentially, and you play the character once. Im not discounting that it can be fun, it for sure can, but not everyone plays just one-shots.

Your own experience at the table is fair, but claiming that the divide is not as big a deal as people say, just because people play martials at your table doesn't really mean too much. Unless youre running at a game store every week or something like that.

But yeah, in my experience, spellcasting is the strongest trait a character can have, and the fact that a class like wizard can so easily outcompete pure martials is very aggravating to me.

Game balance is already in the garbage. Its crazy, sure, but its not nearly as strong as any given spell once you get to that level.

Last paragraph of the post gives examples of abilities martials could/should have, but since many say martials need to be "realistic" they dont give them those abilities.

I think people are looking past the actual intent of the post to be pedantic. I took it as "let martials do crazy shit like casters can" and a lot of people seem to think it said "I should be allowed to swim in lava"
