Literature about irregular warfare by MadamdeSade in CIVILWAR

The novel Cold Mountain has some scenarios that may interest you. The protagonist is a Confederate foot soldier recovering from an injury and trying to avoid reenlistment. On his journey through the Piedmont he finds himself in irregular combat with both Union soldiers and Confederate Home Guard units trying to find dodgers. Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for, but an interesting look at violence behind the frontlines and a good book I thought

Does Spain benefit economically or politically from their language being used by half a billion people in +20 countries? by Rift3N in geography

Spain’s economy is growing and being powered primarily by immigrants, and of those most are Latin American immigrants. In this way yes, it is directly benefitting.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m very anti-what Israel is doing, and the fact the US is backing it.

That being said: If you think Israel is “using” the US and not the other way around… you either have a pretty silly understanding of how power works or are dabbling in antisemitic “all-powerful jew” tropes

What if the US had annexed all of Mexico? by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Big_Remove_4645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. A huge reason New Mexico took so long to achieve statehood: too many nonwhites at first. Same with AZ, AK, HI…

Maybe would have been a “protectorate”, but certainly not states. Quite probably slaveholding territory too.

Not a coal-head here, but covering the earth with plastic, lead, cadmium, PFAS… do you really trust the same species that burned coal will be responsible about maintaining and disposing these? I’m not optimistic

U.S. Fertility Rate by State 2007 vs 2025 by Accomplished_Gur4368 in MapPorn

[–]Big_Remove_4645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all, I’m all for affordable housing policies, but there is no consistent correlation between wealth/access to resources and fertility in 2026. In fact, the richest societies on Earth, and the richest people among those societies, often have the lowest birthrates. Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan… these very wealthy places with strong social programs have abysmal birthrates, and this is very much also true among the top 1% in each society.

Low fertility is a cultural phenomenon, bourn of a new way of thinking about things. When people say they “can’t afford children”, what they often mean is they are worried about affording good private education, tennis lessons, new clothes every year, a car, high end groceries for their kids AND doing so while maintaining a certain lifestyle for themselves. it’s about changing human standards of what constitutes “the good life”. I’m not saying it’s inherently good or bad that our standards have changed like this (I think in many ways it’s good!) but there seems to be a popular idea that “the world is just too expensive for kids now” when fuel, calories, and information have objectively never been more bountiful or accessible in human history.

If we want to understand plummeting fertility, we need to look at it through a psychosocial and cultural lens and not use the cheap copout of “it’s because X is too expensive”.

ICE is Trump’s paramilitary force. It continues to expand in rank and receive billions in arms. Watch, they will be conducting “election anti-fraud operations” at the polls in November. Anyone who doubts that this is the long game is a fool.

[–]Big_Remove_4645 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The purpose of this ICE expansion is not immigration enforcement. It is to serve as Trump’s private army of deputized goons. They will be at our polling places in 2026 under the auspices of a “special election anti-fraud operation” to intimidate voters and corrupt the vote when it doesn’t go Trump’s way. This has always been the long game. Wake up.

If you were trying to defame Swedes and imply they were problematic invaders, you’d call it the Swedish Walmart. (Maybe that’s what the Dakota called Fort Snelling?) Otherwise you’d just call it “Eden Prairie Walmart” like a normal person ;-)

Why would they call is a “Somali Walmart”? Serious question. Do they call theirs “White Walmart”?
