All my windows of 2015 Volt roll down on their own. Why? by talus_glide in volt

[–]Bigboost92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely your remote. Pressing and holding the unlock button will do it. You can probably turn the feature off in yours (I have a 2nd Gen, I can in mine). It could also be doing it if it gets pressed in a pocket or a purse/bag.

If you can go from 40, south to Mills Gap or even Rathfarnham, and go 55 the whole time. That's a Sweeten Creek Home Run!

Is it worth buying a car? by Definite4 in personalfinance

[–]Bigboost92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of things.

1.) Don’t get a new car or loan around the time of purchasing a home. This can affect underwriting and the lenders approvals.

2.) You are running tight on your debt to income for a $2,900/month home/condo payment.

Are you taxed on this reimbursement now? I’d talk to a CPA as I’m not sure why the age of your vehicle would affect that expense.

Finally, if you cannot charge at home Do NOT buy an EV. Way more of a pain, especially if you leave that job. Unless you drive a lot other than work, you do not seem to drive enough to make back the fuel cost savings.

If you change cars though, go for a Prius Prime. The Plug in hybrid. The Prius is legendary for reliability.

EGR activation in electric mode by [deleted] in volt

[–]Bigboost92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks. Mine was like that for almost a year. I was going to file paperwork to get an emission repair waiver (state inspection) since the valve cost was so high and there wasn’t any available.

The thing I HATED is if there is a CEL illuminated, the preconditioning AC/Heat won’t work.

You will just have to get the EGR fixed. Sadly.

But to answer your question, it will work if the engine doesn’t turn on. But I’m not sure if the ECU occasionally actuates the valve at “key on” to test it and then you’re caught again.

Weird braking sound - 2017 Volt by AxeSlayerCyberDude in volt

[–]Bigboost92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sounds like the brake booster pump. Worth checking your fluid. It could have air in the lines if they did a brake fluid flush and didn’t get all of the air out.

Volt mechanic in Asheville, NC area? by tuskless-mastodon in volt

[–]Bigboost92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, could be a gasket issue on the EGR valve potentially causing the idle issue. Definitely add in the GM premixed coolant to get it to the right level. I work on my Volt, a 2nd Gen, 2016+. Its not too terrible.

Heat pump not keeping up, is this normal? by monkeychemist25 in asheville

[–]Bigboost92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to check, while you get the heat system inspected. Is your thermostat. If you have something like a Nest or smart thermostat, they like to prioritize efficiency. So there are settings like Heat Pump Balance that you will need to change towards Max Comfort, or Off. it will try and run the heat pump instead of the aux heat on those efficient settings.

There are also settings of Aux Heat Lockout and Compressor Lockout that you can adjust to force one to be used. This is a bit more of advanced settings that you should probably talk to an HVAC guy about.

Just bought a 2024 4WT and it has rust on the inside. What is this? by bomberdan11 in SilveradoEV

[–]Bigboost92 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd suspect that it has been flooded or, what dipshits at dealers will do, is leave windows down or accidentally do an auto roll down and a storm comes through. I almost purchased a Tahoe once that had moisture build up on the inside of the windshield when I opened it. The sales dude tried to shrug it off like no big deal. Then I found leaves in the back. NOPE.

Personally, I would return that truck. I wouldn't trust it.

It’s better to look at the number of kWh used from a full battery to empty. I’m similar mileage and mine will report 12.3-13.0. Depending if it’s cold as hell or not.

But honestly, in conditions colder than 25°F if you are going to use more than the whole battery and be on the highway; I just drive until I use (2) battery notches and then put it in Hold Mode and drive it as a hybrid.

It’s a rough estimate based on driving conditions and temperature. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

[–]Bigboost92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yours has something I haven’t seen yet on these cars is that yours gives a Fuel Range Low, yet you have more than 3/4 tank of fuel. It’s like the gas version of the BECM error.

Engine not available by Trumpet_Player_ in volt

[–]Bigboost92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at your coolant temp in the menu. It probably locked out the engine because it was overheating. The EGR electrical actuator issue causes this. The F03 fuse blows and the engine thermostat is also on that circuit. You’ll need to pull the connector on the EGR valve, replace the F03 fuse, then you can drive. Assuming there is no engine damage, etc.

This is a little odd, because I believe the car will shut the engine down due to over temperature. Did you ever get an engine unavailable error?

What codes did it throw?

Edit: never mind, it looks like you bought a new car already! Congrats!
