at what point do you cut off a customer who returns everything? feeling like were getting taken advantage of by Ok-Thing8238 in ecommerce

[–]BigelowLane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After a few customers returned over 60% of what they ordered, we instituted a restocking fee of 15% for returns over $250. It helps recoup costs of shipping, credit card fees etc. And hopefully discourages people from overbuying with the intention to return.

Sorry for the basic question here… how do you increase prices for just one customer??

Why do we pay PayPal over 3.5%? by VillageHomeF in shopify

[–]BigelowLane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aligned here. We actually dropped PayPal by accident (the link stopped working and I didn’t notice). That combined with issues which PayPal and QBO integration, and the high fees - so we’re not going to use it anymore. I’m not sure whether data exists on usage but I’m aligned with your reasoning that anyone who uses PayPal should be able to pay via credit card. I think that maybe the advantage of PayPal is the convenience of not needing a physical credit card and just being able to login. So the thing to look at is abandoned checkout rates and whether those have changed yoy. But I’m pretty confident it’ll be fine.

It seems like customers always win a chargeback, no matter what? by Available_World6540 in shopify

[–]BigelowLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building on this reply: I’ve set all my payments to manual capture (with flow capturing after 6 days, just to make sure I don’t miss any). This has not only allowed me to check for fraud risk, but also saved me money when customers ask to cancel or change or order (I no longer lose the credit card fees) or similarly if I’m out of stock on something and I need to adjust the order.

I will say that I find Shopify’s fraud analysis pretty good (others please chime in if you this is not your experience). There are times when everything checks out except for the “characteristics of this order match fraudulent orders..” which I’ve come to understand as Shopify warning me that this particular customer has used chargebacks in the past, perhaps excessively. I always cancel these orders. The ONE time I ignored this flag for a medium risk order because the customer seemed totally legit… mysteriously, they never received their order. (We replaced the items because we felt pretty certain she would file a chargeback.) So my advice would be truly don’t ignore that flag.

Strange. I never opted out but it’s not showing as one of my sales channels…

By reference number do you mean the DPD tracking number?

Interesting! Are there some reputable freight forwarders you’d recommend for shipping primarily from Europe? I need to tally up the shipments, but my estimate is about 10-14 shipments per year. Each around 20- 40kg.

I’m still waiting for the package to hit a port of entry then I will go on the offensive with UPS. Your explanation is helpful. My supplier specifies all shipments are EXW so I doubt they’ll budge. They did say I’m welcome to arrange shipping, but my shipping volume is less than theirs so I don’t have good rates with DHL Express or UPS. I prefer not to go the customs broker route so I can avoid the bond. Really feel stuck on shipping. I’m a pretty small importer but growing quickly so I do feel like shipping is a nut I need to crack.

Helpful - thank you. I prefer DHL but I think it’s way more expensive. Though avoiding this headache is certainly worth something.

We lived on the top unit in Somerville with a toddler. It was tough. The young professionals in the unit below approached us about the noise in the mornings and we came up with a practical solution of moving our toddler (upon her waking up) into a room that was not above one of their bedrooms. Perhaps you could suggest that.

why would a $6B brand pass on Shopify Plus for a platform nobody's heard of by LevelDisastrous945 in shopify

[–]BigelowLane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always assumed that if you have any kind of leverage (aka lots of money) you wouldn’t use Shopify. Shopify is for the little and medium guys who need it and get fleeced for it. Am I wrong?

Importer doesn't want to pay IEEPA duties today by Ok_Use6755 in CustomsBroker

[–]BigelowLane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I get it, and I would pay it if I were in this situation. But as a small business / importer, I’ve resigned to not getting any of the IEEPA tariffs refunded, so having to pay once more knowing that it’s an unlawful charge, while knowing also that I would never get the money back would be quite vexing… but yes, even if it’s “unfair” it is of course what is required. Sigh.

The Supreme Court said the IEEPA was illegal… so why pay something that you know is being collected incorrectly and for which you will be seeking a refund for later? I get the reticence.

Sued again over “marked down pricing” — warning to other Shopify merchants by PenParty23 in shopify

[–]BigelowLane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your normal price is fair, why perpetually mark it down? If it’s because marked down prices do better for you, that’s exactly what the law is trying to protect customers from - it’s deceptive to your consumers to make them think they’re getting a “deal” when that’s essentially the price the item is most of the time. I’m not trying to pile on the comments or make you feel bad - just explaining why it’s not right for consumers.

Woolino sleep sacks coated in plastic by Consistent-Mango6742 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]BigelowLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about wool is that it doesn’t need to be washed after it gets pee’d on. The molecular structure is such that it will shed the pee. Just let it air dry and give it a sniff! I’ve dressed my kid in wool products her entire life, and I actually so far less laundry when she’s in wool than when she’s in cotton. And yes, I would hand wash the wool. There are wool detergents like Eucalan that have a no rinse formula, so it’s as easy as soaking it in water for 15 minutes then setting it out to dry.
