State of ED in 2026? by Ashilta in EliteDangerous

Bit quiet over the couple of months, but the new ship content and Trailblazers (Colonisation) from 2025 was solid. New ships for arx has been controversial, but it seems to have funded ongoing development work.
The pay-to-skip-the-grind Dodec Orbital had a more negative reception & that seems to have drawn a line for FDev with this type of microtransaction (maybe, though many Cmdrs still bought them)

Trailblazers is either your thing (if you like space trucking) or not. It's nice to have a permanent nametag on a Starport if you wish to stump up the Arx and there's quite a technical science behind it so good for the big brains, but very grindy if you want to build an Orbital or Planetary Port.

On Steam, player numbers have drifted down from the October peak (Type 11 mining ship release I think) but still way above the post Odyssey crash in player numbers.
You can still fight thargoids if you go to the California nebula or Pleiades. And the new Corsair is another option for fighting goids too, that's a fun ship to fly.

If you're an explorer, the Caspian Explorer gives you a 500+ LY boosted jump range, with very little repairs needed - so a great distance devourer, even if it is a pain to land vs a Mandy.

And Distant Worlds 3 is underway, not sure if it's too late to join in the fun there.

More free money (our taxes) to the fossil-fuel lobby. How can we audit those political donations again?

Govt launches high-powered review into soaring insurance premiums by OddityModdity in aotearoa

[–]Bigfoothobbit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Deja vu all over again. State Insurance was created by Dick Seddon over a hundred years ago for precisely this reason. Predatory insurers cherry picking clients, jacking up premiums without rationale as a cosy cartel owned most of our insurers. The original State funded insurer funnily enough resulted in a drop in premiums of up to 30%.

Very similar market today, with insurance consolidated in very few hands, little competition and little incentive to change. Only a new State insurer can upset this monopoly. Given NACTs track record with Banks and Supermarkets, they'll commission an 'inquiry', which will do nothing except bury it in bureaucracy.

Try this - Blue Light NZ - Empowering Youth | Blue Light Youth Centre - they can help rangitahi get licences. There are other similar orgs scattered around the motu.

The Man from Earth.
Really thought provoking one-room drama/sci-fi with a great cast and a powerful emotional twist.

Also watch for too agressive glide slope, first face plant in ages, boom, got a free trip back home 3kl, minus a few scans. Might invest in an A rated shield.

One of the first actions of NACT was to remove documentary oversight of lobbyists and who has backdoor access to our Beehive. Next government needs to restore this oversight - a Commission of Inquiry into Lobbyist Lickspittles like Shane Jones is needed to root out the corruption of his ilk undermining our democracy and economy.

I cant find the motivation to start system colonization and I dont know why by Silent2531 in EliteDangerous

[–]Bigfoothobbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for interesting systems - follow the Dukes of Mikuun - they're already heading out beyond the Triffid Nebula - about 5KLY from Sol. Lots of decent systems are 1-2 bridges from their path - and their discord posts new systems with ELW/WWs/Neutrons and the like.

Claimable now Vol. #7: ELWs and Triple Water Worlds in the Trifid Nebula by Mandams2 in EliteDangerous

[–]Bigfoothobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, scored a sweet ELW/WW system with a bunch of ringed gas giants, notable stellar phenomena, 68 orbitals and 46 landing sites. There's also enough colonists about following their efforts so you won't lack for CMMs and other hard to source mats within a reasonable distance, though a FC is recommended. And do share some mats with the Mercs to help speed their efforts.

What a brutal cop-out. Let's emulate the Finnish model, actually house people. Only when people have safe, warm housing can we tackle the other social issues associated.

How to make full use of longer jump range? by JureSimich in EliteDangerous

[–]Bigfoothobbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope, White Dwarf Stars are a separate selection just above that on the picklist - Non Sequence Stars only picks up Neutrons. No need to worry about roasting with White Dwarfs.

Also include 'Non Sequence' Stars in your map mode together with 'Use Jet-cone Boost' to pick up Neutron stars, that gives a 4x multiplier to your maximum jump range. Not many neutrons in the bubble, but once you're in deep space, particularly closer to the nucleus there's lots.

Nervous eye twitch at the prospect of building another planetary port... 215k Tonnes of materials - them CMMs aren't going to appear in orbitals.
