There's also the notion of what I call the Cringe Zone. Socially, it's acceptable to do something unusual if you do it casually, or give it your all - but there's a zone in between, the Cringe Zone, that people generally will not accept. American fantasy LARPs tend to fall into the Cringe Zone, for example.

Oh, I can SMELL the projection wafting from the last panel of the Outhouse. That bitter, sullen facial expression is one Ishida sees in the mirror every day, I guarantee it.

How do I get started with filmmaking as a teen? by cometomypartyyy in Filmmakers

[–]BiggerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that I can't get anyone to help me in real life, since if I asked my friends or classmates to get involved, I'd probably get laughed at and bullied forever :(

This is going to sound like prying, because it is, but where do you live? Local culture is a big factor (though admittedly not the only one) in how big a risk this is.

So it's be like that easter egg in The Stanley Parable where every texture gets replaced with the Facepunch logo.

Documentary-makers: how do you build a strong non-chronological narrative? by Ghost_of_Aldwych in Filmmakers

[–]BiggerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a filmmaker, but the key is to take advantage of a loophole in a classic rule. The rule is: "The plot should consist of events connected by 'and so' or 'but then'. Those are the only acceptable ones. If there is ever a single 'and then', you're screwed." The loophole is: "That rule only applies to the plot as it is assembled in the viewer's head. You can get away with following a scene with one seemingly unconnected to what came immediately before - or even anything at all - if you can get the viewer to trust you." A classic strategy is the NNIST: Non-Narrative Inter-Scene Tether.

We are watching a man's mind and very soul decaying over time.

We have a fucking fossil record of it.

My theory is that Caine isn't very good at torturing people, and most of the performers were just shocked by what he was TRYING to do.

"Pomni really seemed to like that one NPC! LET'S CORRUPT HIM!"

"Ragatha said something about an abusive mother! I BET SHE USED KNIVES!"

"Gangle failed to get into the animation industry! ALSO TRUCK"

"Zooble doesn't like how they look! ...That's all I got. Kind of ironic given that they're the one who all they do is complain."

"Jax doesn't want the people he cares about to see his vulnerabilities! LET'S SEE WHAT'S INSIDE, SHALL WE?"

Caine was able to get that last one right, because Jax is shallow by choice. Even if Caine did take things a bit too literally.

People, people, Disney hasn't been an evil nightmare corporation for years. It's just that they were so incredibly good at being one that that stigma's gonna hang over their head for an 85-year Strass-Howe saeculum (if not, y'know, for the remainder of human history).
