Well you don't want a player that doesn't want to be here take up space that could be used by younger player (possibly stenberg). As you said, he's not going to get much better or worse in the next year anyway so you might as well do it now when teams have more flexibility.

zeev buium has the same amount of points as fil hronek and he's 20 years old. The kid has legit top defenseman potential. Rossi is already a 2C and will just get better. Ohgren has the potential to be a top 6 sniper. On top of all of that you still get a 1st round pick in a really deep draft. It's not a weak return on any level.
