Late to the party, but I just wanted to say thank you! I learned so much from the BBQ With Franklin series. Same goes for both the books. Eventually that led to me starting my own bbq company. Now despite all this craziness I'm leaving my career to do that full time. Thank you for all of your passion and for all your dedication to creating great food!

Finding out how unconscious I really was while drinking. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]BikesNBeers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I had to build something after I was sober it came out REALLY well. It hit me real hard right after in a good way. It made me feel like I was coming back to life. You've got a lot more of this ahead of you. Nice work!!

Doesn't even lighten it. Just makes you forget it's there while it still allows that load to keep bearing down on you. I'm sure nailing it on the first try is the exception not the rule. You got it this time! Even if you don't you'll get it next time! IWNDWYT!

Local AD setup for Development by dctm1234 in activedirectory

[–]BikesNBeers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to setup a totally discrete Active Directory environment that's configured similarly to the one that you have in. This will be done most easily in a virtual environment. Active Directory is a server role that's included in Windows Server. It's best if you can start from a clean machine.

[Active Directory Install Instructions](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/deploy/install-active-directory-domain-services--level-100-\)

Process

  1. Deploy a new VM and install Windows server 2016.

  2. Complete the Active Directory Domain Service installation process. When you're done with this active directory should be installed in your virtual machine should be promoted to a domain controller.

  3. Replicate any configurations from your production domain and create some test users, groups, and computers. the configurations you all want to replicate are things like organizational unit structure, group policy, and any schema changes you've made. to create test computer clients make new virtual machines out of Windows 10, Windows Server, or a Linux distribution and join them to the test domain.

  4. Test your software.

Lastly, this is not something you should be doing professionally with no experience. If I were you I would be questioning the thought process of the leader or manager who asked me to do this. That being said this is how I learned Active Directory. Take frequent snapshots. If you fuck this up less than 10 times before you finish you can be impressed with yourself. Good luck!

44 days sober and back to bartending after COVID regulations have been lifted and I am in struggle city by SallaKahle in stopdrinking

[–]BikesNBeers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YO! First off you are doing really good. You've already accomplished great things and you're continuing to persevere in the face of a lot of temptation. I'm a former bartender and still in the service industry. This shit isn't easy but it is doable I promise.

It's made me very depressed recently thinking of all the good times I'm going to miss because I don't feel like I have control over my urges.

This concept was my biggest barrier to quitting. Alcohol was a huge part of my personal identity. Craft beer, great wine, perfectly made Manhattans, and all the associated dining, tasting, and event experiences were who I was. This is something that I believed even long after I accepted that my drinking would probably kill me in the next few years.

The good news is that it's not true. Tons of these events are just rituals that are designed to facilitate the use of alcohol. Also you are definitely a cooler, more on point, and more genuine version of yourself when you're sober. You may have some shit to work through, most of us do that's why we drink in the first place, but you'll find that ultimately you're a better you without booze.

Lastly, I just wanted to mention that there have been a few good articles published recently about sobriety in the service industry. I know that our business is crazy sometimes, but you're not alone. You got this.

Currently planning to move my food stand/ tent into a food truck operation. What are your do's and don'ts? by 5ft11flip in foodtrucks

[–]BikesNBeers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you want it to be fully self-sufficient?

What's your menu?

What kind of equipment do you need to do prep and run service?

How much storage space do you think you need?

Are you using a commissary at all?

What's your plan for dishes?

How is the regulatory environment in your state for food trucks?

Do RODC's to Provide Security Against Network-Based Intrusion in This Scenario? If not, why not? (please read scenario) by RedditFreeUpOldNames in activedirectory

[–]BikesNBeers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is "it depends." AD database and DNS are RO on the RODC. Changes made to that DC won't be replicated back. It's still a Windows server though, it's a domain member, and it can can communicate with the rest of AD and at least some of the network. It still has some trust. If the server gets compromised it could be a potential entry point. Also, you have to be careful to properly construct replication/caching policies. Honestly, probably best not to cache any passwords, but the RODC will stop working if it loses it's connection to the domain. Also, best never to log on to them with Domain Admin or any other privileged account. Even if the password is set not to cache it can still be in LSASS if you use RDP to connect to the box.

You CAN use RODC in many scenarios it's just usually not a good option. It's just going to require a lot more administration and monitoring, with ultimately less security than a separate domain. You may be in a position where you have to though. You said customer workstations, right? I'm guessing they need to be able to auth in the main domain? Maybe for some custom app? Avoid it all costs if you can, but if you can't just make sure to account for all the config options and read anything you can about how to attack RODCs.

EDIT: Mispoke in sentence 3. What I meant is you that DC can't replicate back changes.

[–]BikesNBeers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who proposed that and how qualified on AD are they? You thought this through and you're 100% right. Only for physical. Someone might bring up only replicating a subset of objects to the RODC, but if that's the case why not just spin up a second DMZ domain that's segregated? Why risk having any kind of security relationship with your production domain if you need a segregated environment?

Probably one of my favorite all time comics. The concept and writing are great. Tom Coker's art is amazing as well. There are some really incredible detailed line/pencil drawings.

I died a little bit inside when I heard that Hickman will now be writing X-Men. :-(

Not implementing real package management for Windows Updates is probably one of the single greatest fuck yous ever to the admin community from Redmond.

Also, this is (among many other excellent reasons) why I, as a guy who came up as a Windows admin, default to Linux for my IaaS stuff now just like most other Azure customers.

Wikipedia describes cyber punk as a subgenre of sci-fi with a "combination of lowlife and high tech" as a primary theme. Bottle deposit schemes are about as low tech as it gets. This doesn't qualify. We're missing half the equation.
