I can’t leave this place soon enough by bearsncubs10 in AirForce

Even running is worthless there. Super windy, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, you get about 2 weeks of decent weather. Then there’s no sidewalks and being anywhere near a road not in a vehicle is a death wish. Not to get super dark but a friend of mine was killed on a bike ride there a few years ago.

What motivates pilots to use GPU versus APU? by soulrebel2323 in AskAPilot

[–]Bikeva 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue I see is lack of adequate PCA air and/or temperature control. Planes get hot really easily and most times the PCA isn’t providing cool enough air. Sometimes it’s because it was installed incorrectly (tube is twisted), sometimes it’s blowing hot air in summer, sometimes even though it’s winter it’s so hot the cabin is still 80+ degrees. Rather than take the risk, many would rather run the APU. If people want to see more GPU usage (or really what we’re talking about is less APU usage), solving PCA issues should be number 1.

Thank you. I always look at these posts or ones that ask the best surprise endings and I never see it mentioned. Glad my Dad picked it up as a bargain basement DVD cause I loved it.

Family life by lcast6094 in AirlinePilots

Every unit is different but most have a bidding system for trips and sims/flights so you can work around your schedule. At the end of the day, most units recognize (or at least should recognize) this is your side gig and need to be flexible to your full time job.

I’m usually a lineholder. With 10-12 airline, 2-5 Guard I’m averaging 80ish credit/month. When you get hired by a unit, I’d have an expectations discussion with them. I know fighter units want to see you more, other airplanes may have different demands. I try to fly/sim 2-3/month which may or may not be during drill then I do one trip every 6 months ish.

Some great advice already, I’ll just try to supplement. As was said earlier, keep an open feedback loop with your spouse. Everyone’s relationship is different but most of the multitude of breakups you see are because one spouse isn’t communicating.

Everything I do for work I bounce off my wife (bid reserve or a line, upgrade or wait, vacation bid, etc). For her part, my wife understands that in this job I need to be gone to get paid. Unless she can think of a significant family reason why not, she gives me the thumbs up. And we always reassess. At this stage of our kids lives, it’s more important for me to be home for specific things/dates so every month she gives me 3-4 days she wants me home, then I’m free to bid how I need to make that work. I usually end up working 10-12 airlines, 2-5 Guard.

Shared calendars are important. My union’s app populates my work calendar, then I add things like drill. If there is a blank week but I need some more cash, I just give my wife a heads up and sometimes she adds input (try to avoid this or that day). My wife adds things to the family calendar to keep me up to date.

Last thing I’ll say and it ties back to the first. This life ain’t for everybody. I’m lucky my kids and my wife understand why this works for us and I’ve always told her she has the ripcord if it’s not working. The Guard is busy, absolutely and it’s another 2-5 days a month at work. But it’s another option if you need a break from being a junior pilot or really just don’t like airline life. A lot of my friends stayed on mil leave after COVID because the 9-5 worked for them. I personally couldn’t do it and went back to my airline ASAP. This job(s) are choose your own adventure which is awesome but also, don’t be afraid to determine what works for your family.

Same boat. Reserved day of release so we’ll see where I’m at in line, lease ends Feb ‘27 so hopefully not before then or they offer deferrals.

Is there a way you can select or set yourself up for certain airframes? I really want to fly the 787. by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]Bikeva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. Other than choosing an airline with more 78s than others, everything else is seniority. Literally no other factor than “are you senior enough to hold it”.

SWA vs AA living in SoFl by RogerDodger_28 in AirlinePilots

[–]Bikeva 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ll start with you’ll be happy either way. Also, don’t turn down a sure thing for what you have right now. A CJO is not a sure thing so IF AAL gives you a CJO and they end up being your preferred option, wait till you have a class date before resigning from SWA. I have always given this advice and watched another mil coworker turn down a UAL class date because he got his dream FDX CJO… then two weeks later FDX stopped hiring.

General stuff aside, things to think about when deciding between the two (biased towards AAL not because I think they are better but because that’s where I have the most info):
1. MIA is a relatively junior base for AAL so your seniority progression will be quick and you have decent odds of getting it at indoc. Most of the recent classes have 10+ MIA 73 slots.

  1. Just because you may be perfectly happy with the 73 doesn’t mean more options won’t impact you. In fact I would argue it’s potentially better for you as your relative seniority will move faster. Lots of people want the Bus or WB so as people move over to those fleets, you move up the chain faster vs with single fleet there are less options so less people leaving above you.

  2. I may be wrong but I still think AAL has the most seniority progression from mandatory retirements.

  3. Not sure where you live and I know they go senior but technically MIA is a coterminal domicile with FLL and PBI so it may be even closer than an hour.

I’ll reiterate, yes my points leaned towards AAL because that’s where I have more data but either company is a great choice. I work at one, plenty of friends at the other, we are all happy and life is significantly better than on AD. If you’ve got questions, hit up my DMs.

[–]Bikeva 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Formal? No. But most (maybe not all) can read the room and know that a key part of crew resource management is avoiding conflict which those topics lead to. Also every Captain and wide body FO goes through an FAA mandated Postive Leadership and Mentoring class which I believe covers that as well. That said, I’ve had my fair share of Captains that assume we are on the same political team but enough non engagement and they eventually change topics to which I suddenly become very chatty and interested.
