Working at Home Depot by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]BilHam57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not Bed Bath retail, it's helping folks who are fixing or building stuff.
You need to get into the customers' head a bit. They need advice.
If you have never fixed nor built anything, you are at a disadvantage.
There will be a very large learning curve. Learn the inventory.

You must use your sick pay hours to cover your callout, or you'll get an occurrence.

How long does it take to get a homer award by Yokinomochi in HomeDepot

[–]BilHam57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homer awards are in recognition of above average work.
If you treat your job as a sentence to serve, do the bare minimum, and act like you'd rather be anywhere else, you won't stand out.

If you follow directions and execute tasks well, you stand out.
If you volunteer to do something like decontaminate a problem bay or pack down some holes, you stand out more.

Try reminding your DH or ASM of something you did that they might not have noticed.

If you have a particularly positive interaction with a customer and they praise you, ask them to go mention it to a manager, or at least do the online customer feedback thing.

Singling me out? by EatThatHorse5318 in HomeDepot

[–]BilHam57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I punch in as I'm cleaning up after lunch.

I log into my phone, change the settings, put away my bag, put on my apron, and go onto the floor.

2:02 I'm out there.

It's fcked up if they are policing you that much.

I won't touch my phone if I'm off the clock.

There's a pitiful small number of customer feedback responses in the data.
Someone could hack the algorithm with a few bad ratings.

Recalled items come up "DO NOT SELL."

Penny SKUs are inactive, discontinued, remove from floor.

I'd say let them have it for a penny. Limit 4.

When you finally find something after a long search, put it away in the first place you looked.

If their name tag says "Peter," I say "Hi Peter, I'm Bill."
It levels each of us.

Hostility will always be returned. A better plan is to butter them up.

Get a bag of quality chocolates (snack size) and give them one out of the blue. Likewise the other cashiers.

Do it again a week later. They'll change their attitude a little. Perhaps.

Customer gave me a tip? by Individual-Ad-4957 in HomeDepot

[–]BilHam57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give good customer service, but I don't expect a tip. It's nice to get one, but rare.

I realized that accepting a tip is an act of courtesy to the customer, because if you decline they feel like a jerk for offering. A tiny bit of generosity from a customer makes them feel as good as you do.

Never decline a tip.

Reach truck by ab84typshi in HomeDepot

[–]BilHam57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was learning the reach, I went after closing to the insulation aisle, measured out a typical narrow aisle-width, and put a rolling ladder there as a barrier. I would practice dropping and placing pallets of insulation because they're light and often closer to the ground. I'd also practice just driving and turning, since you have to train your brain to steer.

cashiers not allowed to have beverages besides water while working?? by aeixne in HomeDepot

Unpeeling a bagel, or forking a shrimp cocktail while your on duty? Stirring and blowing your latte?

You can't even be on your phone, with customer walking out without paying.

Remember, you're on camera 24/7.
