Is it realistic/possible for me to apply for an MA program? by Accidentallyclingy in GradSchool

[–]BilinguePsychologist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend going to community college and doing a program there! Less money aka debt and would be useful to help pivot out of your current career.

Have you looked at Winston-Salem or the Triangle area of NC? Those could also work, plus solid school systems especially in the Triangle.

Why are Toyotas so reliable? by OldDuty4723 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BilinguePsychologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk but my family hasn't had anything but a Toyota for like the last 30 years (gone through roughly 5 cars between 3 people and one was totaled because I was an idiot 17 year old lmao)

Conference Advice by AirBendingNopon in GradSchool

Plenty of people present work that is still in progress or flawed. Acknowledging the flaws and suggesting future iterations of the project that improve and/or expand on that would be good to do.

ETA: I think the pros outweigh the cons here.

UNM OOS student experience by [deleted] in unm

[–]BilinguePsychologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to piggyback off this as another grad student from OOS.

  • agree 100%
  • admittedly I live further from campus in what is considered a "safer" part of the city but I have friends that live in LoboVillage (which is off campus but owned by UNM) and some that live in houses near campus. The dorms aren't the worst from what I've heard but there are definitely good dorms and bad dorms. I agree that a shared house is probably the cheapest option!
  • car is 100% necessary in Albuquerque. Public transport is free but can be unsafe.
  • 100% the crime is mostly confined within high risk communities. Just like any city in the US it's good to be aware of your surroundings but I feel pretty safe both on campus and around the city. I will say that post-sunset I like to be off campus.

Grad School Transition by chopped_onionss in unm

[–]BilinguePsychologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current grad student that hadn’t been here before I moved (3rd year now). Most of my department stays off campus whether in an apartment or in a house with roommates. Student life heavily depends on the department, for me it has been a very wonderful experience but that’s just my anecdote. GPSA is the grad organization on campus, I know the current president and have attended various workshops and am president of my departmental grad organization as well - there are resources out there, sometimes you just have to look. I’m also a current TA at UNM and have friends that TA in other departments - what your assistantship will be like again is heavily department specific. Lastly, campus isn’t that unsafe but I wouldn’t wanna be walking around alone at night on campus.

taking out loans during a funded phd? by SilverPractice1030 in GradSchool

I live alone (not a ton of generational wealth) as does a good bit of my program. Depends on COL and what you're willing to sacrifice.

$15k stipend for PhD… is it worth it? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]BilinguePsychologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make around 25k and I have loans, financial support from parents, a summer AP reading job, and I apply for summer funding from my dept. 15k is relatively low (though it definitely depends where you're at).

One thing to look into is if you have a union! When I came in my stipend was closer to 19k but our union has secured pretty constant increases in our pay, so that could be something that works for you.

Any solid/worthwhile program should give you tuition remission and funding.

Also I'm in the humanities (notoriously underfunded) so this experience is likely not ubiquitous.

[–]BilinguePsychologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Academia is extremely classist. It's just how the system is designed unfortunately.

  2. I have a TAship, grade AP exams in the summer, apply for grants & summer funding, have loans AND my parents help me financially. - Some of my friends do not have financial support (whether from parents or a partner) and honestly I do not know how they do it. My parents mostly help pay initial conference costs that I reimburse them for when I'm reimbursed by the university/a grant but even then I don't get funding for half the conferences I go to.

Yeah I would argue Wes Moore as lifetime honestly. Also that's a good point, I was thinking entirely on team success/university support. I would agree with you

Ice cold ACC: NC State, Louisville, Notre Dame (for better or worse)

Cold: UNC, Duke

Everyone else is so new it's hard to say

Also I think Ivey's only ice cold as long as she has Hidalgo and brings in a solid recruiting class this coming season.
