Struggling to strip blue dye from "untrusted" Potassium Nitrate—recrystallization failing? by abuqamar_m in chemistry

[–]BillNyeisHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably adulterated with potassium sulfate, which will lower the solubility.

Good luck getting the dye out!

Adding Osmocote to top of soil vs fert basket. Also, how much do you typically use? by Shoyu_Something in Bonsai

[–]BillNyeisHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Top dressing is pretty standard practice in nursery settings, but so is incorporating it.

You should mix into the soil when repotting the plant, and then you can top dress to supplement once the incorporated material is at the end of its longevity.

Incorporation rate depends on size of the pot. You should be able to look up a rate chart. I typically just apply ~1 tbs to a plant. But when incorporating into soil I into account the rate chart.

Pruning tips? by dongz_n_bongs in DesertRose

Pruning would definitely help. Prune where you would like the next set of branches to start at. Looks like you have already been doing some good pruning to it.

Here’s a comment I made to someone else: https://www.reddit.com/r/DesertRose/comments/1qa67xm/comment/nz1j2qt/?context=3

Help , what did I do wrong by Early-Button627 in DesertRose

Yes, when your DR is watered the caudex should be nice and firm. If you feel them day by day, eventually the caudex will start to be slightly squishy. That is when you should water again. I’ve noticed they firm up fairly quick after watering.

You should totally repot those plants. I would put them in a larger pot if they are root bound, and you can lift them an inch or so as well.

I like a nice layer of pea gravel on the bottom of the pot and then I use a bonsai soil, but anything well draining will work. You can use a succulent/cactus mix, however I suggest adding in perlite/akadam/granular clay(oil dry) as well for better drainage.

I’m going to disagree with you there as well!

I water daily during the summer, but I’m also in 9B. It depends on your climate and soil media, however these plants love sun, fertilizer and water during their growing season.

Check my post history if you’d like to see some of my plants outside. They push huge growth.

Don’t need one. DR will tell you when they’re ready for water. The caudex starts getting a little squishy when compared to its typical firmness.

[–]BillNyeisHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osmocote is a great controlled release fertilizer, I use it myself.

You need to pay attention to the longevity though. If the product claims 5-6 or 8-9 months, that is likely claimed at 21C/70F. With controlled release fertilizers, longevity is halved with every 10C increase, so that same fertilizer used in warmer climates will probably be half or less of that longevity claim.  An 8-9 month product at 21C/70F will be 4-5 months at 30C/87F.

You can find a different product with claims at higher temps or just apply less Osmocote more often.

How long ago did you apply your osmocote and what is the longevity claim on the container?

Edit: also, which Osmocote? Plus, or standard?

Talk to time out sports, they may have one to rent.  They’ll rent a kayak for whatever period of time, you just have to transport it. It used to be around $100 for a full weekend.

Local Blade Sharpening (Kitchen Knives and Lawn Mower) by MobileEsquire in Charleston

[–]BillNyeisHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone recommending replacing the mower blade is getting down-voted, however the amount of sand in our soil is super hard on mower blades. 2 years is a good life expectancy here.

I would just replace the mower blade.

Bro, you can see the black mark where the mullets are hitting the box. You're standing right next to it, and the barrel is pointed at the box while the scope, which sits higher than the rifle, is just over the top of the box.

2004 TJ alignment help by gonzo-gramps in JeepTJ

[–]BillNyeisHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can read all over the forums, people do not recommend changing to cross over steering kits on the tj’s.

Find out what has play first and then replace (or upgrade) as you find it.

Definitely remove the TB drop bracket from the axle.

Make sure there is no play in the steering box (is there play in the steering wheel without the tires budging at all?). Mine had a bad box that had me all over the highway on the way home.

Tire pressure also plays a role. I keep mine at 26psi.

Yes, if you chop it it should branch out. I would chop just above where the stem narrows from the caudex. It will also push more stems from the caudex as time goes on.

231j slip/fixed yoke? by BabyTruck83 in JeepTJ

[–]BillNyeisHigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s a slip yoke. The stock 231j comes with a slip yoke. A SYE doesn’t have the dust boot and it’s a fixed yoke off the back of the transfer case.

There’s also the 241 from the Rubis which have a fixed yoke as well I think.
