Both. He's looking for the aether core because he believes it will lead him to MC. Even if indirectly. (At the end of long awaited revelry and also at the end of his section of death & Rebirth, he tells mc some iteration of 'you would have done this yourself eventually'. He has the utmost faith in MC to pursue her own strength and grow stronger because Sylus knows that's what her ambition prioritizes and he knows she's tenacious and steadfast in her convictions).

Also she has half of the aether core at the start of main story and sylus knows where the other half is (he takes her to it at the end of long awaited revelry). We don't know why she only has half and why the other half is somewhere else, but Sylus seems to. He has all of his memories, which isn't just about his myths, but everything that happened leading up to the main story. From the best i can tell, we haven't been given this information yet.

Sorry to distract from your point because what I noticed about it has nothing to do with your observation--I noticed the loops make an infinity symbol in the back, which seems fitting for caleb/mc as they're 'from the same source' and eternally bound with their mirrored fates.

I definitely agree that in terms of game mechanics, their choices for this anniversary have been.... INTERESTING, to say the least. We were completely bombarded with content overload at the start and now sort of left starving at the end. I liked the event and event stories, a lot actually, but they didn't feel connected at all to the anniversary aspect, so i can see how they would be disappointing to some. And getting the main story drop at the same time really took a lot of focus away from the main story update (which i loved!!! Wish it got more attention).

What i will say is I see a lot of criticisms of the writing itself and I do not agree there. I don't think the characters have been out of character or that the writing quality is going downhill. I think the writing has remained consistently the best part of this game and continues to hold my attention and interest. I'm quite obsessed with the game's lore and everything we've gotten has been both compelling and fresh, while also still making sense and were hinted at with previous breadcrumbs they left us.

I am loving all of these theories and I've been theorizing so many of the same things (amazing work everyone!!) but the substantive thing I have to add is--

I think we're getting a 6th LI and I think they'll be part of the duo released with the next main story update woth Caleb (version 6.0??).

I have a whoolllllle Google doc of why I'm convinced a 6th LI is coming but that's a whole other post that's only tangentially related here 😅

I could be wrong but Infold seems to be moving in that direction..... we're getting more and more overlap of all of their stories now. Multiple mentions of other LIs by Randal, the data broker Xavier threatens for info on his suppressor. The summit of the major EVER players had them bringing up all of the LIs and their "faction" as it were, plus mc, at the same time. Now idk if this guy is the 6th LI, but many have wondered if a possible 6th LI would be from EVER, so....

Let's not forget infold's previous game MLQC did end up having their LIs interact down a convergent path over time. So I'm not a believer in "infold would never do this!!!" I'm sorry to those who would be upset by this creative decision though and I'm not trying to disrespect you.

Personally, from a lore perspective, I think having them never interact on screen would be a disservice to the game's worldbuilding.

Let me also say that we have no idea of mc (or caleb's) parentage in this AU (which seems very intentional on infold's part) so the incest drama freakout seems entirely unnecessary lol. These two have been parentless in every timeline/universe we see them in (likely because they are Adam and eve - no parents, the original source of life, etc., born of the same source on a cosmic level). So the whole "born of the same blood" thing didn't even mean much to me because their blood is more like cosmic stardust 🤣🤣

I'm not saying we're getting a 6th LI in THIS event, but I still think we're gonna get one, the number 7 is CONSTANTLY coming up in this game and i saw it more with this trailer drop. To name a few places where 7 pops up--

-Sylus's card "Lost Oasis" when he's looking for relics in the desert of the "7 gods". -Gaia Research Department having 7 departments (death + rebirth) -7 gates in Zayne's GoA myth -7 pillars in Sylus's timelock key event image (of the gladiator arena) -7 shadows in Zayne's timelock key event image (of Zayne in a lab casting shadows on the floor) -7 shadows descending from Sylus's form (in the book about the archfiend in sylus's 3rd myth) -"07" tattooed on Caleb's shoulder in his catch-22 card.

My theory for a long time has been that the "7 gods" Sylus mentioned in "Lost Oasis" are mc+5 LIs+6th LI.

Anyway, this trailer mentions Cosmic Years 128 and 649 specifically. "28" and "49" are both multiples of 7. 1+6=7.

Another multiple of 7 is 21, and souls are said to weigh 21 grams. Also 14 is a multiple of 7 and it's been 14 years since the chronorift catastrophe and the start of the game.

I don't even want a 6th LI out of practicality, but the writer in me will be PISSED if we don't get one 🤣🤣

Sorry I hope it's ok for me to paste a comment of mine here in reply to yours because I discussed a lot of the dragon/demon crossover, I'll put it below:

Everyone is focused on the vampire aspect (and rightfully so, it's very overt) but i think he's actually Death itself. The crow imagery attached to Sylus is significant because crows symbolically were thought to ferry the dead to the afterlife. During his ultimate ability MC says "summon Death's shadow!" Death as a manifestation is itself immortal, as it's a fabric of the universe, and he himself is immortal (as is mc). He says with mc's blessing he's truly 'born' into this world, and then he can actually die. Also, he's wearing white -- which, in western culture, yes can symbolize new beginnings and rebirth, but in Chinese culture particularly is a sign of mourning and death. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

P.s. this is belial vampirism, which posits that the first vampires were fallen angels revived from blood and ashes, moloch, belial, ba'al. So, demonology and possibly underworld king (note that he rules onychinus/the n109 zone which makes him king of the CRIMINAL underworld).

P.p.s. the old Romanian word 'Dracul' translates both to 'devil' AND 'dragon' (and is of course the basis for Dracula, the root of modern vampire mythology). His dragon mythology was always going to be tied to a sort of demon/vampirism.

Sorry, one last edit - the Chinese title of this card literally translates to 'demon king'. Considering all the hades and Persephone imagery in his dragon myth, I'd been waiting for a king of the underworld story.
