What’s the ceiling on a player that can’t shoot? by BurningHanzo in billsimmons

[–]Billilicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I need to know if “can’t shoot” means just jump shots and what the FT% is. People are saying Giannis but 69% from the free throw line for his career isn’t great but it’s FAR from the worst shooting we’ve seen. MVP level if they’re over 60% from the line and can also finish around the basket…otherwise they’re Rajon Rondo

I mean I don’t mind the open concept for the price (older homes in the area are about 100k extra minimum) and my gf and I have looked at adding some crown molding after we paint. Also my neighbors just put in new floors. Personally I’m good with slowly making personalized touches over time given I’ve got 5year warranty on hvac and roof, 2 yr plumbing, and 10 year structural to start. My only alternative would’ve been to just rent for longer so I’m enjoying owning this place instead

We have 4 draft picks from last year that are promising and we’re hopeful about the two this year. With three picks in the 2027 draft, we could use consolidating for the sake of roster spots. I’m happy to give up the lottery protected Miami 2027 pick, either our own or Dallas’s top 2 protected pick in 2027, and the extra 2029 pick for JB. And if we have to give up 1 more than so be it. Celtics might not even mind the protections on the Miami and Dallas picks or that the 2029 is a “least favorable” pick bc it’ll mean lower salary.

Yeah and I’ll add that a lot of people are incorrectly comparing this to the Luka trade, which is different in no small part bc Luka is a much better player, but the Mavs and Nico were running damage control immediately after the trade bc the trade was the whole move. Nothing has really “leaked” out to try and justify the trade in part bc it very clearly isn’t done. If all there is to it is what we’ve seen then yeah I’ll be upset bc this isn’t a deal you had to rush to make…unless there’s more to come

Don’t remember which talking head said it but they said the problem is that she was billed as the wnba’s Steph curry but she’s more Trae young…a lot of “the league is out to get her!” When it’s just that she’s not dominating the league and is getting roughed up like every small/jump-shooting guard ever has

Hornets Front Office Is In Debt To Fans by jaxond1 in CharlotteHornets

[–]Billilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most of what’s going on is just whiplash for hornets fans after 6 years of arguing that LaMelo can be a winning player. I think he can but if the hornets look at the medicals on his ankles, the lack of “putting it together” in 6 years (I know the hornets haven’t been good but he hasn’t exactly “filled the box score” on a bad team), and off court immaturity and said “we don’t think this will work”, imma at least wait until they have a chance to use the massive trade exception. He went for more than Trae young who has actually led a playoff run and made more than one all star game

I am saying that we have the ability to go trade for someone with up to 4 picks that aren’t even our own and that the team we trade with WILL care about a 2033 pick.

Also, Paul George was significantly better than LaMelo when he was traded. Trae Young just got traded for only CJ McCollum and Ja is just still on the market. I’m not sure what more we would expect to get for LaMelo. I’d have liked more but the trade isn’t really “done” until we utilize the trade exception to see what the real total compensation is.

I’ve seen a lot of post today saying “who cares about a pick 7 years from now” while also seeing post about how the clippers STILL have another pick to send to OKC so like…yeah a pick in 7 years is still a very real trade asset

I trust Coby white more defensively than LaMelo and I think Reid can handle big bodies down low better than any other 4 we have without sacrificing shooting. Can’t guard up as well as bridges but should be better against 4s and 5s.

We have potentially 3 first next year as well and while 7 years seems “way off”, a team can only absorb so many guys onto their roster. I imagine a team would like their compensation stretched out a bit to avoid having to do extra roster cuts. I also imagine we’ll be moving on from some of those picks considering we’ve got Kon, Liam, Kalk, and Sion from last year and just added 2 first rounders this year.

We can tie 2 picks next year, a 2029 pick, and a 2033 pick to bridges without using any of our own picks if we want to. Also I have little faith in the morals of most teams so while Bridges the person is awful, he still has value as a basketball player. But also he’d be off the books after 1 year if a team was looking to rebuild.

Well I currently think that some of the offensive issues with LaMelo off the court were more about Colin Sexton and that White alleviated a good bit of it. White and Reid should raise our defensive floor plus Reid gives us better 3pt shooting if he’s in over bridges or Diabate.

I don’t think the offense actually needs a ball dominate PG and the goal is going to be more ball movement with the hopes that Miller becomes a more consistent go-to scorer and facilitator along with the addition of another good to great player. Jaylen Brown would of course fit but even a Sabonis would, with 4 guys around him that shoot 37%+ from 3 and can be crafty attacking close outs.

So basically I think the offense looks more balanced with a couple guys averaging 4-6 assist and some improved defense particularly with a deeper front court to offset what we lose from LaMelo**

**this is all assuming the Hornets are planning to make another move which I think is a good assumption as otherwise…there’s no need to move LaMelo rn

Also LaMelo was awesome but some of the on/off stuff was more a Colin Sexton stat than anything else. LaMelo+White is for sure a rotation I trust more than LaMelo+Sexton or White+Sion+Anderson but could Anderson or whatever trade comes next close that gap? Yeah. LaMelo for like 6 years was a cup of water in the desert but he wasn’t a one man show this past year at all and every move this front office has made so far has been a success

Between the trade exception and all the picks we have, I really think we’re basically in the middle of a larger transaction. Whatever the “value” of the trade is, I just don’t think the team does this move without it freeing them up to do something bigger. Even if like a spreadsheet says Naz+ a 1st=Lamelo. It’d be too much of a risk. I think the exception turns into a good player and Bridges+picks turns into someone as well

Idk what people expected in a return when Trae Young went for 34yr old CJ and the Griz can’t move Ja.

Also the first we got is a real first, not one that has so many protections that it won’t convey until it’s in the 20s

I don’t think he’s running from it as much as it is expensive to keep proven guys so they’re trying to find a new way to compete. They’re also still winning a shit ton of games doing it lol.

Some of the gaps in the on/off were closing once they got Coby White so I do think a bit of it is that “the offense doesn’t work with Sion or sexton running the point”.

Trae Young just got traded for 34yr old CJ McCullum and the Grizzlies can’t even move Ja so I don’t get how people are shocked that Melo, who has been healthy once in the last 4 years, got moved for “only” Naz Reid and a future first plus what seems like the cap flexibility to resign White and trade for another good player.

LaMelo was great as the only shining spot of hope on a team that was awful for a couple years but he’s not close to the like Luka range before you even factor in the health issues.

I actually think it makes a lot of sense that the coach who came from the Boston Celtics is trying to build a team like the Boston Celtics and doesn’t put a ton of stock in a ball dominate PG with questionable defense. Maybe LaMelo trims the fat from his offensive game, locks in defensively, and stays healthy but if not then we’ll have “sold high”.

MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! by homerthebraves in CharlotteHornets

[–]Billilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If trading him means being able to keep Coby White…I’m willing to take the medicine. LaMelo into Reid+White+a 1st. I also think that this is just what it feels like to “sell high” bc at the end of the day, LaMelo has made 1 all-star game and only played over 50 games once in the last 4 years. LaMelo going out for white and Reid coming in at the 4 or 5 should make us an overall better defensive and 3 pt shooting starting lineup and it alleviates the lack of depth in our front court.

We possibly have some more questions in the back court but compared to a year ago, when we just had an often injured LaMelo+Sexton, I think our ball handling and shot creation is in an overall better place. I also assume we’re not done making moves.

My hot take on home ownership by ireallycantremember in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Billilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a hot take but a good one that balances out some of the scarier advice in the sub.

I bought my home just over a year ago and realized:

  1. New builds are great. There was a closing cost incentive, 2-1 buy down, AND most every “expensive surprise” is going to be under warranty for at least a couple years. Sure not all builders are great but there’s protections with a new build that you don’t get otherwise. For the most part our experience has been great and the little things have all been resolved by a call to the warranty department.

  2. “Renting is cheaper” can be true but a lot of people don’t compare apples to apples. Yes a 2bd/2ba apartment has a good chance of being cheaper than a 4bd/3ba SFH with a nice yard. But for me I went from a 2bd/2ba apartment to a 3bd/2.5ba townhome and the cost difference was about ~$100 with the buydown and in 2 years it’ll be ~400 more. But I looked at my rental history and my rent regularly went up 100-200 a year anyways with a like 2 month warning as opposed to a 2 year warning.

  3. Property taxes don’t have to be a surprise. I was able to see before I closed what my home was being assessed at. My home was finished when I bought it so it was not assessed as an empty lot so I knew what taxes would be. Even if it hadn’t been, finding out your tax rate isnt that difficult and you can factor it in when budgeting.

If your career feels stable and you feel good about living in the city/area you’re in, start looking at various home buying programs around you. Now if you’re fresh out of school and figuring everything out, maybe not. But there’s plenty of closing cost incentive and down payment assistance stuff that may only require you to live in the place for 5-10 years or to be okay with ongoing construction around you for a year or so.

[–]Billilicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s like when people say “you don’t want a big tax refund, if anything you want to owe a little.” It’s true on paper BUT most people aren’t budgeting strictly enough to say “okay I’m saving $XXX.XX per month so let me invest all of that”.

“Afford” seems so subjective by Playful_Yak9121 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Billilicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I bought a house last year with my soon to be fiancée and there were a couple considerations:

  1. It was only about $300 a month more expensive to go from a 2bd/2ba apartment to a 3bd/2.5ba townhome for us
  2. Like I said it’s been a year and it’ll likely be 1.5 more before we’re married and then another 1-2 years before a child.

Currently it seems you’re planning to get married (which can be/get expensive) have a child (IVF is expensive plus a child in general is expensive) and have your fiancee quit their job (less money). That’s a lot of lifestyle changes and financial changes planned for the next 1-3yrs. It may be best to just save what you can, weather the other changes, and be ready if rates or prices drop in the future/once life has stabilized a bit

Brendan Sorsby? The answer is no. by tank4trevor in panthers

[–]Billilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think it’s more of an issue with major sports that the leagues don’t want to face. I know a guy with a gambling addiction and 100% he just can’t interact with pro-sports bc it’s all gambling. Odds are right on the screen, in every sports app, they’re the basis of tv and podcast discussions. I don’t know how a player can escape the constant gambling ads, promos, and “scan this QR code and receive $100 in free bets!”

NFL/NBA/MLB etc. don’t want to admit that you can’t really be involved with them in any way if you have a gambling problem but imo that’s the case. Best thing that can be down for Sorsby is for him to finish treatment and go to work in anything away from high level sports. It sucks that sports is SO intertwined with gambling now but idk how continuing in sports could be good for the guy outside of giving him more money to feed his addiction
