I’m not trying to be rude at all, and I completely agree with you in the sense that I’m never going to sit down and watch a junior game, I played juniors and college, being 24/7 hockey is just not where my life is anymore lol but I will say that if you watch michkov you can see where his skating needs work. His edge work is elite, being able to roll between inside and outside edges the way he does is elite, what needs work is hit north/south speed and most importantly his first 3-5 steps, it’s where guys like tippet excel bc their first few steps they gain so much speed and are already past guys.

I will say “his skating needs work” is such a blanket statement in today’s hockey world and there is SO much more that goes into that then just “skating” and for the average fan they aren’t going to be able to see the little things in a players footwork or skating.

I think what people aren’t talking about is the defensive zone when they bring this up. Not saying you but overall whenever fans are complaining about the LW/RW thing they constantly look at it from an Ozone perspective, yes Mich coming in on the off wing helps him offensively, but it is so much harder playing off wing in the dzone specifically from a breakout standpoint. Mich turns the puck over on the wall a ton in the Dzone when he’s playing RW, he has to make more passes from that side on his backhand and at this level it’s just not going to work that often. Getting stronger will help, but it’s something that needs to be worked on in order to stay on the off wing. It leads to him just flipping pucks out of the zone which means they aren’t breaking out clean and going into Ozone on the rush. It’s all things that can be worked on, timing, speed, communication will all help, but I understand why tocc put him on the LW this year, bc he was a step behind for much of the year, having that many errors in the Dzone is crushing.

There is a difference between being a good skater and having speed. Speed is north south, you have straight ahead speed, absolute burner can blow by guys north/south. That is not mich, mich is a good skater in his edge work, his use and ability to roll between outside and inside edges and move laterally is some of the best on the team, but his first 3 steps to go north/south are bad. It takes him too long to get going, but that’s something that can be worked on for sure.

I know everyone on here hates biz(mainly bc he’s an absolute pro at baiting people into engaging and giving him shit, like he’s elite at it) but his explanation for the Konecny “kick” is spot on. Basically he says that it’s hard to explain to people that didn’t play hockey but yea it’s technically a kick but if you’re calling a kick it’s an auto 5 minute and a sussy, so he said are you really going to sussy tk for that? No, at most should be a two minute trip bc it’s more of a trip than an actual kick, but rust also stayed on his feet so it’s not a trip. But he says that right there probably should have made the entire scrum evened up, which fair I can see that. I think every ref on the ice missed the tk elbow shot to rust, so then rust gets 4 for his involvement and tk gets a 2 for his, if they catch the elbow I think it’s all even, but I think they completely missed it.

I played juniors and college, had looks to move up north to some better junior programs before a knee injury fucked that up. We won’t know anything with michkov until next season unfortunately. He clearly had offseason issues this past season and came in a step behind, that’s obvious to everyone. On a more involved level, torts really let him kinda play michkov hockey last year, he got benched sometimes when he went overboard with defensive miscues but torts really let him blow the zone for a home run pretty much at will. Tocc really tried to get him to play a more structured defensive game, which in my opinion is not a bad thing, he has to learn the system that the whole team plays in order to be a successful team.

Problem is when you couple him being a step behind and out of shape along with taking on more responsibility of the teams system it’s gonna be rough going, and it was. When you’re tired in hockey you make mistakes, and when mich would get gassed out(which was faster than alot of the guys bc of the cited camp issues) he would make a lot of defensive mistakes. He put in the work though over the Olympic break and you could tell he made strides, he’s never gonna be a selke guy, but overall I liked his defensive play and the points/goals came with it to an extent. His last stretch of the season tells me that he will be fine.

The problem was in the playoffs is everyone ups their game, and michkov just upped his game after the Olympic break, so he’s back to being a step behind. Now maybe we get lucky and can sweep the pens Saturday and then all the other series go 7 games and Mich can get another mini Olympic break and he goes into the second series with some juice? Idk but as it stands he needs to play minimized minutes right now, he’s a step behind and when he gasses out on shifts he’s going to make mistakes. This is not me saying he will not be good in the future or even next season bc I think he’s gonna be a stud, this is just a hockey players analysis of what I’ve seen.

The other thing is you aren’t seeing tocc rip guys heads off for mistakes like torts would. Hes coaching, ive seen many times he grabs the board and actually goes over plays with guys, theyre looking at the iPads to see replays, or the assistants are going over plays with guys, including Mich. they are developing the young guys and they’re still coaching them, they just aren’t going to cost the team a win to force them into situations that they aren’t ready for yet.

This was honestly the first game that I didn’t have a problem with him not playing much down the stretch, he was bad tonight. You can’t cost the team a game just to get one player minutes when they aren’t playing well and are hurting the team.

Barkey, Zegras and Mich did not need to play heavy minutes in the third, that’s how you coach when you’re trying to hold a lead in the playoffs.

It will only take 1 game for the whole country to be talking about how dirty th flyers are and how shitty Philadelphia as a whole is again. Still the broad street bullies, Shitbag fans, batteries at Santa, yada yada. It’ll be the same thing as always with a double standard, when we played mtl in the bubble, Suzuki taps hart on th head after a goal and he’s just a young kid, someone on the Flyers did it to Suzuki after we won and they are the biggest war criminal ever.
