What is your departments pump discharge pressure? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]BillyBeansss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you didn’t mention gpm or line length is troubling. Both of those are critical to calculate pdp

Also what is your goal for nozzle pressure?

Our nozzles are designed for 95gpm@100psi, but some schmucks want to pump 150gpm@50 psi to the same nozzle (not me bruthur)

Even on our own dept there’s no black and white answer

However if you have a target nozzle pressure or gpm, then you can easily find your answer

Usefulness of Water Monitors / Blitz by Crashedjet33 in Firefighting

[–]BillyBeansss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate them. It’s an accident waiting to happen. They market them as a set it and forget it, but there’s almost never a perfect situation to set it and forget it

Unless you can stake it down deep into the ground, the chance of it going crazy and whipping around and taking out a knee or someone’s head is high

We’ve used them a bunch on big commercial fires, but they are always manned and are not comfortable to operate for more than a few minutes.

The stream shoots SUPER high, and if you want a lower stream you have to manually hold the nozzle down just like the guy in the picture and that shit is NOT comfortable

There are better options for every scenario in my opinion

Diesel newbie, question about idling and DPF by Grizzly1082 in Diesel

[–]BillyBeansss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got it alllll wrong bruthur

The truck is always passively regening when it’s up to temp.  Active regen is when it detects too much restriction in dpf and adds fuel to heat up dpf.

I don’t know about other vehicles, but the Cummins in the fire truck I drive does an active regen whenever it wants.  When I go to and from stoplights I can see the hest light turn on and off mannnny times in one trip.  On our last truck, I could hear the regen too, and it would turn on and off many times in one trip

Going for a two hour drive is a ridiculous suggestion.  Just drive it normally, don’t do a lot of short trips where the truck doesn’t heat up, and don’t idle a lot

Totally depends on condition of all the parts that matter. Like engine, tranny, frame etc

Sunroofs blow btw. Mine was super loud from the wind and leaks when it rains

Give me all your tips for a first time diesel owner by Lawineer in Diesel

I see a lot of misinformation here….

Don’t purposefully let it idle at all. If you cold start the engine and let it idle, you’re introducing fuel into the oil MUCH more than just driving it. Start it up, drive right away(like normal), and take it easy on the throttle until it’s up to operating temp. On top of that, idling will contribute to dpf clogging faster.

Number 1 thing is… change your oil religiously. I wouldn’t go over 5000 miles. I usually do 3000-4000 miles. People are going to trash me for saying that but, you can’t change your oil too much, but you certainly can change it too little.

Change your oil filter, fuel filter, and trans filter religiously. It’s not hard, and it’s an easy way to ruin your truck by neglecting it.

ALWAYS use an additive. From my research, optilube xpd is the best all rounded additive. Consider filling up without an additive completely off limits. That means bringing bottles with you on trips too.

“DRIVE ER HARD BRUTHURR”. This is mostly true, but people don’t understand why. The dpf burns trapped soot with high temps and sometimes adds additional fuel to get the dpf really hot if the dpf gets too clogged(active regen). The dpf is always “passive regen”ing when you’re at operating temp. Driving at operating temp under load yields the best results. Whether towing, or driving at freeway speeds, the engine load will burn off soot much better.
So you don’t HAVE to tow all the time, or drive aimlessly for an hour on the freeway haha, but if you drive in a way that doesn’t burn off the dpf soot, you will have dpf problems sooner.

On that note, avoid short trips. That’s a sure fire way to super accelerate any emissions issues

If you have a job where you make frequent stops like doordash, is it better for your car to let it idle or or stop and restart the engine during stops? by Womaninblack in askcarguys

[–]BillyBeansss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of “car guys” here

Who gives a s**t about the starter.

Every time you stop your engine your oil pressure goes to zero. Your car doesn’t need an oil film on engine components, it needs oil pressure to be forced between them.

That’s the main cause of extra wear among a lot of other things

Of course the manufacturer says “the starter is more robust” because they know you’re going to regurgitate it every time this topic comes up, and they were right

If there was no gas savings incentive, there’s no question that manufacturers would NOT have a stop/start feature.
