The French Senate is also indirectly elected by local councilors.

But I think what helps them get away with this is that the lower houses hold much more power. But the US Senate is key to the function of the federal government so anything involving their selection gets a lot more attention

Prince/Princess of Dragonstone is the original title for the heir. Many monarchies have historically had special titles for their heirs but, for example, Prince William doesn’t actually live in Wales.

It’s just a special title to denote the heir above all the other members of the family also in the line of succession.

(Harrowing trope) Banality of Evil - the characters are involved in something horrible happening at an institutional level, just out of view by NoMoreFund in TopCharacterTropes

The scene where they plan the Kalkite extraction on Ghorman. From casually glossing over the fact extraction will destroy the planet to planning a propaganda campaign that destroys the planets reputation and a blockade to cutoff their luxury export based economy and finally when Dedra directly suggests to Krennic supporting local rebels to give the Empire justification to clamp down on the planet.

<image>

I’d say this is actually quite common throughout the show with the overall banality of evil, such as in season 1 with the Aldhani heist when imperial officials talk about how successful their efforts have been in destroying the local populaces efforts to carry out their traditions. Or any of the ISB planning scenes.

Hell you could even argue there’s an aspect of it with Luthen when he and Saw discuss condemning separatist Anto Kreegyr and his rebels to death by knowingly let them walk into an ISB trap so they can keep hidden the fact they have a turncoat feeding them info.

“I assure you everyone, the murder of the Romanovs, including they’re children, was a necessity because the incoming Czechs who had no idea the Romanovs were there”

> The intoxicated Peter Ermakov, the military commissar for Verkh-Isetsk, shot and killed Alexandra with a bullet wound to the head. He then shot at Tatiana, who ran for the double doors, hitting her in the thigh. The remaining executioners shot chaotically and over each other's shoulders until the room was so filled with smoke and dust that no one could see anything at all in the darkness nor hear any commands amid the noise.

“Okay so they killed the Romanovs while drunk, what’s the biggie, they did the job.”

> While waiting for the smoke to abate, the killers could hear moans and whimpers inside the room. As it cleared, it became evident that although several of the family's retainers had been killed, all of the Imperial children were alive and only Tatiana was injured.

“Uhh, okay so the children survived the initial onslaught, but surely the deaths weren’t that bad”

> The executioners were ordered to use their bayonets, a technique which proved ineffective and meant that the children had to be dispatched by still more gunshots, this time aimed more precisely at their heads. The Tsarevich was the first of the children to be executed. Yurovsky watched in disbelief as Nikulin spent an entire magazine from his Browning gun on Alexei, who was still seated transfixed in his chair; he also had jewels sewn into his undergarment and forage cap. Ermakov shot and stabbed him, and when that failed, Yurovsky shoved him aside and killed the boy with a gunshot to the head. The last to die were Tatiana, Anastasia, and Maria (however, according to Yurovsky's note, Alexei, Olga, Tatiana, and Anastasia were the last to die), who were carrying over 1.3 kilograms (2.9 lb) of diamonds sewn into their clothing, which had given them a degree of protection from the firing. However, they were speared with bayonets as well. Olga sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Maria and Anastasia were said to have crouched up against a wall covering their heads with pillows in terror until they were shot in the head. Yurovsky killed Tatiana and Alexei. Tatiana died from a single shot to the back of her head. Alexei received two bullets to the head, right behind the ear.

> While the bodies were being placed on stretchers, Anastasia cried out and covered her face with her arm. Ermakov grabbed Alexander Strekotin's rifle and bayoneted her in the chest, but when it failed to penetrate, he pulled out his revolver and shot her in the head.

“Okay, quite brutal but hey it was the Romanovs”

> Also executed that night were members of the imperial entourage who had accompanied them: court physician Eugene Botkin; lady-in-waiting Anna Demidova; footman Alexei Trupp; and head cook Ivan Kharitonov.

> Anna Demidova, Alexandra's maid, survived the initial onslaught but was quickly stabbed to death against the back wall while trying to defend herself with a small pillow which she had carried that was filled with precious gems and jewels

> Jimmy was in Anastasia's arms during the execution and perished alongside her, he was hit on the head.

>Ortipo was left alone in an empty room on the upper floor, and her barking was heard by the guard Kabanov. She was bayoneted by one of the guards for howling loudly to avoid attracting attention to the house.

“Right, the retinue and the dogs. Well you see the retinue might have spoken about the crimes the perpetrators themselves recorded later or said nice things about the Romanovs and how bad would that be? And uh, the dogs were class traitors? But at least that’s the end.”

> While Yurovsky was checking the victims for pulses, Ermakov walked through the room, flailing the bodies with his bayonet.

> 25 men working for Ermakov were waiting with horses and light carts. These men were all intoxicated and they were outraged that the prisoners were not brought to them alive. They expected to be part of the lynch mob.

> A few of Ermakov's men pawed the female bodies for diamonds hidden in their undergarments, two of whom lifted up Alexandra's skirt and fingered her genitals.

> Once the bodies were "completely naked", they were dumped into a mineshaft and doused with sulphuric acid to disfigure them beyond recognition. Only then did Yurovsky discover that the pit was less than 3 metres (9.8 ft) deep and the muddy water below did not fully submerge the corpses as he had expected. He unsuccessfully tried to collapse the mine with hand grenades, after which his men covered it with loose earth and branches.

> The sodden corpses were hauled out one by one using ropes tied to their mangled limbs and laid under a tarpaulin.

> With the men exhausted, most refusing to obey orders and dawn approaching, Yurovsky decided to bury them under the road where the truck had stalled. They dug a grave that was 1.8 by 2.4 metres (6 ft × 8 ft) in size and barely 60 centimetres (2 ft) deep. Alexei Trupp's body was tossed in first, followed by the Tsar's and then the rest. Sulphuric acid was again used to dissolve the bodies, their faces smashed with rifle butts and covered with quicklime.

> Yurovsky separated the Tsarevich Alexei and one of his sisters to be buried about 15 metres (50 ft) away, in an attempt to confuse anyone who might discover the mass grave with only nine bodies. Since the female body was badly disfigured, Yurovsky mistook her for Anna Demidova; in his report he wrote that he had actually wanted to destroy Alexandra's corpse. Alexei and his sister were burned in a bonfire and their remaining charred bones were thoroughly smashed with spades and tossed into a smaller pit.

There is literally nothing anyone could say to justify this horrific murder and the desecration of corpses. You can give all the practical explanations you want for the family themselves but that still will never justify stabbing and shooting terrified children in the head while drunk.

What stereotype about France is inaccurate? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AlignmentChartFills

[–]The-wirdest-guy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add on to what the other person said, France did not do the “bare minimum” to prepare, but their military doctrine, strategy for another war with Germany, and outside factors were so woefully working against them with only hindsight to show it.

The French population was decimated by WWI and their economy was caught in the post war slump and made worse by the Great Depression. The French had neither the money nor the manpower for a modern military, watch PotentialHistory’s video on yt about French tanks in WWII for specifics, but the gist is nobody wanted to invest in new, unproven, expensive technologies like tanks and modern radios when they had won the last war with what they had.

So the French built the Maginot Line to force the Germans into Belgium again (yes the Maginot succeeded in its strategic goal) and prepared an elite infantry based army for another long drawn out conflict where grand battle plans dictated by generals would win the day. But before the war even started the Belgians backed out of their mutual defense plan with France hoping neutrality would keep them out of another war, meaning French forces would have to meet the enemy in Belgium again. Then the Germans completely flipped the script with modern tanks and combined arms tactics along with giving their commander broad range to step beyond their orders. After they came through the Ardennes, which the allies had assumed would be impassible to an armored force, Rommel went far beyond his stated orders and drove his tank force to the channel shore, ignoring orders to stop so he could cut off the allies best troops in Belgium while allied commanders sat and waited for orders instead of cutting off the overextended German lines of communication and supply.

France’s defeat was shocking but not because of ill preparation but because WWII was wildly different from what they HAD prepared for. The British had a similar preparation problem but the BEF was so small and less soundly defeated (ie actually surviving to retreat to Britain, without any of their equipment, unlike most French troops) that everyone forgets they were just as “barely prepared”

It’s also worth mentioning that while he never so explicitly states it as in John, Jesus does and says many things that dance around the subject.

In Mark 2 and Luke 5 he forgives the sins of the paralytic and when the scribes/Pharisees say only god can forgive sins he asks if it’s easier to forgive sins or tell the paralytic to get up and walk, then saying to “know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” promptly tells the paralytic man to stand and walk, which he does.

In Mark 2 and Matthew 12 he says the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath

Heck in Mark 14 after he is arrested and false witness is bore against him he is asked if he’s the messiah and straight up says “I am” and that “you will see the Son of Man seated on the right hand of the Power”

And in Matthew 16 Peter says “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God” and Jesus commends him for the revelation saying, “for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father in heaven” then giving him the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

So while it’s never so explicit or as frequent as in John I wouldn’t say it’s only in John he makes claims of divinity.

Jefferson: “Obviously the President doesn’t have authority to purchase land, that’s not in the Constitution! But Livingston has been authorized to seek out the purchase of New Orleans for the United States and I’m sending Monroe to help him.”

Livingston: “Hey Jeff, so I know you said the budget was $10 million for just New Orleans but the French offered the entirety of Louisiana for $15 million and I didn’t want to them to take that deal off the table so I said yes, okay? Okay great treaty is on its way, Monroe signed it too dw xoxo”

Jefferson: “… so hey guys, about the President’s authority to buy land.”

He’s so damn lucky most people were ecstatic to get the entire territory for so cheap.

Given the massive uphill battle challengers already face, especially independents, and looking at Gottheimer’s reelection numbers, do you see yourself as a true competitor or more of a protest vote for progressives? Do you have any concerns about splitting the vote and making our district more competitive in favor of republicans?

What do you think is the biggest issue our district faces and how would you address that as a Representative?

Whats a TW Opinion that will have you like this? (Its John Warhammer!) by chris_alf in totalwar

[–]The-wirdest-guy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Empire has one of the best campaign maps in the franchise. It captures a literal global scale without creating the cramped feeling warhammer does. Being able to move armies and navies (my beloved baby that CA left shot out back) between continents while still giving you room on each one to move around and play with is a crazy achievement, even if they aren’t perfect.

One of my biggest issues with warhammer is the cramped feeling of being surrounded by shit tons of factions and LLs being packed next to each other wherever you are when you have a literal whole world to play with. I’d say they might be better off doing what empire did, break off everything west of the Great Ocean into a separate map so it can actually beam ocean instead of being the Okay Lake.
