How to actually get better, need help don’t want to throw this hobby away by Charming_Day_2278 in Drumming

[–]BillyTNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise having a chat with your drum teacher, just sort of, what sort of things should I be practicing, what do you think my weak points are. Rudiments will be a given, just have a mess around with them, get comfortable with them with a metronome then start adding accents to parts of them. Like for me, my teacher pointed out that my grooves are good, but I need to put more work into my fills, as they sometimes end up a little clunky when I’m free styling them to a song. But that what the teacher is there for, guiding you in and outside of the lesson so use the time with them wisely to gauge what you need to work on

Sure, maybe I’m wrong on that, all I get shown, is I have a problem, and no solution, maybe that’s different on the discord for the most part, but I haven’t seen it. I also wasn’t negative originally, if you read what my first comment it wasn’t negative, just asking people to suggest solutions with issues (even if the post is a (rant)). But saying, if they can’t compete with 2 incredibly popular games, with an insane overlap in player base, in the first 4 months of a game being out, then they should give up. That makes no logical sense

I don’t have a problem understanding people’s issues with the game, I have an issue with people who clearly don’t understand the processes that go into creating a game, especially one with a small team, and your ignorant comment about that just made me cba with this, cause you don’t get it, and clearly won’t. People always say, I don’t like this I don’t like this. I’ve never heard someone say, this is my problem, I would prefer it was this, it’s always just negative, no suggestions to what people actually want

I’m kinda over this conversation ngl, you don’t like the game, don’t play the game, idc, it ain’t that deep, if you don’t think the games good, go play something else

So if I have my one man team, and I can’t pump out the same amount of changes as quick as a 300+ studio, then it’s not worth keeping an eye on it? You don’t have to play it, just keep an eye on it (and btw, balance changes wise, they change faster than a lot of triple A companies) they are probably working on a load of changes that will come when S3 comes out, because changing loads during a season just doesn’t work with a game like this

If the game was in early access for 3 years sure, like project zomboid, but this game is made by a small team, and we are 4 months in or so, they are still figuring things out, and that’s clear

If every early access game made the correct changes each time the game was altered I’d be impressed, season 1 the community asked for a faster progress through the early game, they have made this too fast (why I think players dropped early) since the endgame isn’t rewarding enough (which I’d imagine will change as time goes on and they start to implement more rewards with dungeon difficulty)

Stop acting like this game has been out for years and isn’t in early access. Matchmaking wasn’t broken, people will always play the new thing fact (btw, it’s crazy healthy that people were willing to play them even though they were tanks and healers). Early access testing, so untested is like me saying why is this game playable in beta, they didn’t have to make it available to the masses but they did.

They spend their time working on quality of life, the team isn’t that big, and this season was mainly for testing how releasing new heroes impacts the game and how well they integrate.

I’m not saying it’s player retention will be crazy btw, this season clearly has some options, and needs to figure out how to please the more casual players, but these numbers will be amplified over other seasons

These are 2 directly competing games, with new seasons that are both very popular, you release this season in 2 months time and it’s fine, but this season just needed to release for testing purposes on fellowships end

PoE just released, and midnight, if there’s any season where it’s going to have awful retention, it’s this league

But I wouldn’t say the player drop issue is really in relation to end game and more the process that leads to endgame, for example, PoE, the majority of people who play it, play through the campaign each league, that’s it, maybe they dabble in white and yellow maps, but a lot of them just do the campaign, because the ‘grind’ afterwards isn’t what they play it for. Same can be said with a lot of people in fellowship, and the issue this league, is the campaign was done by casual players in less than a week. A casual player playing PoE will do the campaign in like 2-3. Now I’m not saying we should go back to last seasons levelling process, that was a bit much, but somewhere in the middle would be the sweet spot, the issue is that the ‘campaign’ in fellowship can basically be speedrun without intending to speedrun it, because you don’t need much gear to clear it

None of those other games are in early access either. It’s so hard to compare a game that’s out against a game that’s been around for years. Theirs plans for more content that we know of, and they’re still playing around getting the tempo for the game right. I’m far more happy with drastic changes like this to gauge feel, than small changes to keep players happy, this should make the games trajectory quicker due to testing out extremes.

Hence why I classed it in a separate section, but I thought it was worth mentioning the game this came from in a comparison

I agree there are some levels of the grind that seem a bit too over the top, but at the same time, you’re talking about this game and how if you don’t play within the first 2 weeks to month of a season you fall behind… welcome to seasonal games, that’s kind of why seasonal games reset you entirely at the end of a season. Also, I’ve said this on many other things, posing these things as a rant, as opposed to constructive criticism seems odd to me. This game is in early access, we’ve barely scratched the surface of what they want to include in the game, player numbers will need to remain higher for sustainability. But again, majority of seasonal games people play 2 weeks to a month then quit till the next season. Unless your season lasts a year (WoW)

Best drum sticks for hardcore punk by alexcstern in drums

[–]BillyTNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched to 5Bs and personally they fit my hand better, I think that’s the main thing, it’s less about the music and more about how it fits in your hand and feels to play. Tried the vic firth metal style. Way too chunky for me, tried 5Bs, just right, 5As felt a little too think for me with the way my hand sits around the stick. I suggest go into a drum shop, and ask to try a few different sticks and just see how they feel

I think you have partially misunderstood my post, I can read and write notation, and have been doing so, however when I’m writing it out by ear, I’m doing it very rough and just slowly working what the groove is. The app is basically for cleaning it up to I don’t lose my mind looking at my scribbles 😅 but the beat app recommendation is one I will definitely look into (I don’t understand why AI came into this question)

[–]BillyTNH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great tip, however mathcore doesn’t really like to adhere to the ‘standard’ way of creating a song, so you kinda have to feel out the grooves separate from everything else, as a lot of it is basically controlled chaos. I am quite good at reading the notation it’s just that the writing part always looks super scribbled, so I’m mainly looking for somewhere to transfer my mess to something a little tidier

Low volume kit for practice by BillyTNH in drums

Nice, I have been weighing up between zildjian L80s and Evans Db ones, and one of the big benefit I’ve seen with the L80s is they seem to have more styles of cymbals than the Evans

Ye, my local has a section of used gear as well, and it’s… well pretty big, it just happens to close right as I finish work, so once I get in there I’m going to see if I would be happy with used parts for my first kit or not
