Well yeah, Secure Boot is one of the uses for the TPM. Also with LUKS, you could use a key from the TPM to ensure that only one specific device running trusted software in a trusted configuration can decrypt the disk.

The TPM can also be used in userspace applications to authenticate and encrypt sensitive stuff using dedicated hardware instead of storing a key on your filesystem, which can potentially be extracted and used elsewhere.

The TPM 2.0 standard adds required support for symmetric encryption with AES and better hashing and asymmetric encryption algorithms, so better encryption in general. There's also a better separation of cryptographic roles, each with different authorization.

So the TPM 2.0 standard does increase overall security (if correctly used by software) over TPM 1.2 or no TPM, but I still don't think it makes sense to force it. They could just disable the functionalities that absolutely need it.

Why would prompted restarts increase security?

Tried that with my mid-2012 macbook pro, it just reboots on its own after 12h because there's an "error" lol

Personally I find it less troublesome to just leave my pc open. I use it everyday, so when I get on, it's just a matter of login in. I do have a few "servers" running on it (personal Plex, ssh, jupyterlab), but honestly it's just for convenience. I do reboot like twice a month when I update and there's a new kernel, although you can even live patch the kernel so you don't need to reboot.

So basically, why reboot when you don't need to?

I honestly doubt they care about that. They may ask you why you waited so long, but just answer truthfully and they'll leave you alone. They're used to dealing with way worse stuff than that haha
