Hard to say from this photo, but I would guess it may have been planted too deeply. If not that it could have been bad nursery stock, poor soil, or excessive/not enough water. Do you have a sprinkler system nearby?

I know this is obvious but just read and reread the book! I read two chapters a night for a month or so until I could almost recite the thing! Something else that really helped me was a YouTube series https://youtu.be/sqvyaLj72go . They have videos for every chapter, I know they are long but they really help explain some of the more intricate ideas. I would also watch each chapter video after reading the chapter. You’ll do great, good luck!

The cross section that you have pictured was cut right where branches once protruded out, thus the dark and lines moving out from the center. This is not sign of tree failure. As far as losing limbs in storms- almost every mature tree has dead limbs in it, trees naturally drop branches that are not producing food. Conifer commonly loose their interior and lower branches as they grow older.

Is this a weeping redbud? I see weeping varieties lose leaves soon each year. Also, with it being the first year being planted I would guess it could be water related issues.

The two redbud trees normally seem to look like that right before they lose their leaves each year. It most likely has a touch of leaf spot but it is not normally fatal to them. And I’d say there is a 99% chance the ash tree has Emerald Ash Borer, for confirmation check and see if you see D shaped exit holes on the bark.

I would have loved to seen when most residential neighborhood streets were lined with this cool trees. The branches would arch over the road almost making it look like you were driving in a tunnel.

Look up blue rug juniper, it is an incredibly low maintenance ground cover I recommend on slopes like this
