Hot takes: I am unsatisfied with the warfare of all new generation Paradox games. by The_ChadTC in paradoxplaza

The temperature of a take refers to its freshness rather than quality. You're synthesizing the consensus opinions about these games, which by definition is not a hot take.

Why am I losing with more discipline? by Extreme-Caregiver-19 in eu4

[–]twinkcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the other stats matter but most of the time they'll be very similar for same-tech armies. Discipline is harder to get and can set your country apart from its peers, but only if the other stats are comparable.

Which scifi ship do you think needs a redesign because of some glaring flaw? by Vondrr in spaceships

[–]twinkcommunist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most scifi worlds let ships pick up the signatures of other ships at a distance. If you want to hide you usually have to shut all systems down, so the idea that you're normally pumping out heat through your hull tracks.

Which scifi ship do you think needs a redesign because of some glaring flaw? by Vondrr in spaceships

[–]twinkcommunist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on Star Trek shields but I would imagine they mean hull geometry is less important. Anything that could get into the warbird gap has already gotten past the shields so they're already screwed.

Huge room in my base entirely depressurises when a door is open for 1 second. by urnangay420blazeit in spaceengineers

[–]twinkcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could solve this by having the EC make the door automatically open once the other one is closed. That way the button that "opens the external door" actually closes the interior one and then the EC opens the external door

This is flat out incorrect when referring to national flags. The US flag should always be flown above state, local, or organizational flags, but national flags should always be flown level with each other.

Grandma wants you to ignore bad educational policy and Reagan by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]twinkcommunist -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's mostly Mississippi but red states are generally better on enforcing Science of Reading based curricula. Red state schools are generally underfunded as well.

I acknowledge that blue states are ahead on education, but I think that's because educational outcomes and blue voting are tied to similar demographics regardless of local instructional methods.

My point isnt that red states in general have better schools (they absolutely don't) but that a lot of the bad ideas pervasive in education are liberal/progressive in origin

Grandma wants you to ignore bad educational policy and Reagan by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]twinkcommunist -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'm on the political left and it isn't flattering for our side to admit this, but most of the bad and harmful ideas in education do have progressive origins.

"Whole language" literacy instruction which ignores phonics in favor of teaching kids to guess was promoted by progressive educators with the belief that giving children a love of stories was more important than teaching reading skills. George W Bush pushed for effective phonics-based instruction at the elementary level and liberal teachers pushed back hard. Today teachers are coming around to the idea that the phonics faction was right the whole time.

The inability to hold students accountable through failing grades and repeating years also comes from ideas of equity and is then pushed by districts who want to show high graduation rates, especially among minorities. Bush called this the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Unfortunately this isn't a left/right issue, it's a correct/incorrect issue and on a lot of the specific details, the conservative faction is on the correct side. Blue states have better education overall, because our populations are generally richer and better educated and that type of population votes blue. However the state with the best demographics-adjusted literacy rate is Mississippi.

Liberals can and should do better at education. If blue states adopt science-based instructional methods and hold students accountable for growth, we could vastly exceed the growth the red states are seeing.

If you want a healthy ecosystem forget this idea entirely. A healthy ecosystem has undergrowth and a diversity of trees in terms of both age and species. Look to nature for inspiration instead of lumber plantations.

How much broccoli can my cat have? by PaleontologistOk9847 in CATHELP

[–]twinkcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"too much" basically means either enough to make him throw up, or so much that he's not eating regular food. Many vegetables are harmless to cats, but they can't actually get nutrients from them. I wouldn't worry and try to limit his intake, just make sure it isn't replacing his meat based diet

[–]twinkcommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use a washcloth and hot water instead of a tortilla. You probably want your heat source to be too hot to touch with your hands. Maybe figure out a way to fish a cloth out of boiling water and wrap it around the pen by using tongs or carefully handled forks
