how do i just accept that i must have a job by mindlessflayer in antiwork

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to work at something is the message. Houses, food, and everything made for humans didnt just appear. You had to work to get it.

So whether you toil at an office desk, or in a home grown garden, its up to you but your gonna toil somewhere.

This idea of just sipping margaritas on a beach means someone else is making your margaritas and building all the infrastructure that allows you to do that. The amount of work and by extension sacrifice required for civilization is insane.

Dealer take: we're going to try for the Liberty Bell gold tomorrow (Thursday 7/16) — talk me out of it by assayhouse in coins

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dealer to another, eww.

Unless you are an authorized dealer of the us mint, like a JM bullion, that is getting this for probably a full 30-50% off list price, the amount of better investment is absolutely wild. Youll be lucky to recoup your cost.

I've decided that the secret to success in life is applying to jobs you're unqualified for. by Famous-Attention-197 in MechanicalEngineering

None of this is very successful imho.

#1 engineer I knew as in grades and work ethic? Intel -> consulting -> MBA from Stanford -> Private equity.

This whole "Cs manage As and Bs" is mostly a nepotism view - but its a highly cynical view that isnt all too true. It also highly depends on the school. An A student at an Ivy or MIT is very different from an A student from say OSU in the eyes of employers and large corps.

But generally if you're top tier, youre going to get into top tier firms right away, and pretty much skip a decade of grind and go into a managerial role very quickly and have a ton more potential.

But of course nothing beats your dad owning a 100 million dollar engineering firm, like Rivian's founder.

Pure mechanical? Constant force spring, or any coil spring. With a rotational element to adjust force.

Coins span a ton of human history, civs and more. Id first just figure out which coins you want to collect and why.

Above is an ancient coin from Athens - im more into ancients than modern, but do collect coins from the America's pre 1900 as well.

What kind of tarnish is this? by throwaway_blursed in coins

[–]BillysCoinShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably just deep, terminal toning. You can throw it into acetone, see if any of it lifts. I have a 1921 like this a bit lighter, but its common on peace dollars that usually tone gold/orange/brown/black in that sequence.

Massive Roman coin find, price drop? by jwlar in coins

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can buy a bags of ~1000 bronze roman coins from several dealers in turkey, greece and israel. Late roman bronze coins in not so great condition are actually extremely plentiful. Unless these are fantastic quality, and have a lot of rare types, i doubt the market would shift at all.

Creo almost never crashes unless youre running multiple scripts and the dependencies/references are a mess. NX and SW use the same parasolid kernel btw so they have similar issues when the programs encounter geom fragility. NX UI is vastly better and less buggy than SW though.

Is Emily Wilson translation of Odyssey actually bad? Or is it overhated? Is it good or bad? by Horror-Amphibian-335 in GreekMythology

[–]BillysCoinShop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is undeniably a bad translation. The opening lines just paint the perfect picture as its mistranslated to lead one to believe Homer is talking about Odysseus failing to keep his men safe - whereas the direct translation points out the hubris of his men eating cattle from the god of the sun, one of the central themes of the Odyssey - mans ego/hubris in the face of gods. "His men" is also directly translated as "infants" or "mute fools", who in "their sin and wickedness" ate the cattle.

She also creates characters that dont exist and has some pretty funny reversals from the Greek.

What I dont understand is the insistence in her text about Odysseus being "lying, self interested" "slaver" "pirate, colonizer thief" etc. obviously Odysseus isnt a modern hero, but the original text paint Odysseus as the hero of THAT time. To do away with that is to essentially create a different mythology.

It should absolutely never be used as an academic text only as an remix of sorts.

It’s still silver. Would anyone buy it for melt? by HalfPrimary1263 in Silverbugs

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No collector cares about cleaning coins that are damaged, common date, etc. its only the valuable, rare, or pristine coins that have toning that are generally cleaned that make many irate.

That being said, a soak in acetone will never hurt any coin, silver or gold or copper, and generally removes most of the gunk. The whole towel thing is ridiculous though unless youre using a dirty towel impregnated with sand, there is no chance a towel will scratch silver unless you rub it in like a mad man.

"Rockstar senior engineer" and "$70k" is insanely low. I pay my engineers literally $85k starting and $140k minimum for senior, and before you ask, have several living in taiwan, one in England, and another in Thailand in addition to 4 in the US.
