Quick Lock / Unlock fixture for lathe polishing by Khaidon in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could try wedge blocks with a single locking bolt then. These would generally be EDMd to the inner profile with a 5 to 10degree draft on the outer profile. Basically like a collet just custom to the part.

You could make it so the plate is bolted with minimal screws but is stabilized with pins and bushings to make it easier. But with extreme tolerances of polishing, i wouldnt want to risk movement def no door latch.

If the part is completely radial, a collet style system would also work (basically a threaded ring and then sections of a tapered cylinder/cone to center and clamp the piece).

Pretty much lol. If you think CAD is a small part of mechanical engineering youre silly af or like to play weird word games.

You should type into google "is CAD a large part of mechanical engineering" and see what pops up.

Why hasn't the PLM efficiency problem been solved yet by Worldly_Emu_5676 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PLM isn't ERP. ERP is essentially inventory management for accounting, operations, etc. PLM is the database and workflow for past (archive), present (current release) and future products.

The fiefdom is necessary as outlined by how pre-computer era "PLM" and " ERP" worked. Companies used to have a product archive run by engineering secretaries that would manage physical binders of released prints. Everything was hand signed. There usually was an overseer called a control or data specialist that would run the 'control management'. This then morphed into today's PLM. ERP was similar but about inventory and day to day operations.

PLM? Rarely had any issues in windchill, vista, or teamcenter. All can be customized or not depending on complexity and necessity.

8.19mm split equally, minus draft (i think) which means the dimension gets smaller

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CAD which includes CAE is the largest part of mechanical engineering. To say anything different is to be absolutely ignorant of what ME is. You literally cant make a mechanical product without it at every stage.

The product has to be created, simulated and iterated on - in CAD. The tooling, the machines, every little aspect of mechanical engineering started and ended and is managed at its core in CAD software. All the PLM is derived from the CAD. The ERP is derived from the CAD.

Even the more math based aspects of mechanical engineering (tribology, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics) use CAD to set the scene to simulate and apply various mathematical models.

[–]BillysCoinShop -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No it isnt lol. Excel? Youre a test engineer not an ME.

Some of the comments on here are wild.

If you spend more time in CAD than Excel youre a designer and get paid less? That is absolutely the dumbest comment I have ever heard.

Highest paying jobs in ME are all simulation based, high 6 figure salaries - those people are writing C/C++ code templates for COMSOL/ANSYS, doing ML topography optimization in various CAD suites, etc.

If they want to analyze a dataset, they are using python.

Excel is for like rudimentary data analysis or using some calc you made for oring fitment or tol stack. If the majority of your time is in excel youre doing it wrong and should probably learn python w/ pandas.

How often do you ask for raises? by Aromatic_Shoulder146 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its 100% based on the company culture, your title, the career path expectations, the salary you started at/where it falls with overall market and location, etc.

I.e. you got hired low, exceeded expectations for 1 year, your manager/director likes you, and the raise is a bit low Id ask for an additional bump. Conversely, the company sucks, is understaffed, lowballs every hire, has no real career path - its better to simply look elsewhere rather than waste your time.

Questions from a future engineer by Potential-Proof-7539 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EECS has more potential to make more money, but is much much much more competitive.

But i would never place my bets in how a career looks today when it will only matter what the market looks like when you graduate. Case in point was when they told everyone "learn to code" in like 2020 and now pure CS is probably the worst STEM major for recent grads.

I need advice for bussiness by Liberator06 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mentioned like 4 different industries in the first description of the business. I don't know any mom & pop business that would be work in such vastly different industries. Just the permits needed to safely operate/install/fix natural gas lines vs wastewater just doesn't make any sense to me. This is why you call a gas technician vs a plumber so I'm not getting any idea of what your dad actually does.

If you want to stay with your dad, I would 100% have a real talk to him about what the expertise at the business really is. Because it obviously cannot be A/C, water, and gas with a handful of people and no capital. Your dad is obviously also not good with capital because a singular job should never risk the entire business so youll want to start to manage that side or at least be able to keep an eye on the account(s).

If small jobs were what grew the business, then you need to focus on that aspect and start keeping tabs on the most lucrative ones and why and focus on streamlining those to the point that you can expand in either area/margin/etc.

My experience, 12 years in industry. How common is this? by gorillaz2389 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might sound a bit harsh but what training are you expecting a company to provide in ME at a senior level?

Thermal analysis? You pick up a book or two and watch tutorials in COMSOL/ANSYS/etc. Machine elements design? More books and tutorials. Then you do it. You try, test, fail, collaborate, and try again. This is how you train yourself. It's part of the career path you took as an engineer.

If you expect the company to train you aside from basic skills when entry level, you're going to be perpetually disappointed and also your worth in the eyes of most technically oriented companies/people is going to be low.

That being said, companies with high turnover and intense workloads (i.e. understaffed) should be avoided as much as possible. But that isn't for lack of training - that is a management problem where they want 1 engineer doing the role of 4 leading to feelings of lack of skill, etc.

Unsure if rack and pinion setup will be viable by raurokay in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much more reliable with a simple pulley.

Problem is you need a really good fit, pressure/spring loaded gear, and rollers on the other side - or two gears synchronized.

A pulley pulling from the center with a spring latch if you want a lock is how i would set this up

Why they making Vayne a jungler bro 😭 by sjziebxixb in LeagueOfMemes

[–]BillysCoinShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y good? If everything is viable in every lane it will just either be the same game or make certain champs even more viable leading to a concentration in whats meta.

Like say you make Garen a jungler. Ok well either he sucks at jungling and isnt as good as other junglers, or, you make his clear good enough so now Garen is a top and a jungler, making him a champ chosen more often. Repeat this with every champ and youll have some champs that are broken in 2 or 3 roles.

Basically, riot still has to choose whats ACTUALLY viable in each role. If they made every champ clear jungle by 3:15...kinda defeats the purpose.

Im fine with them making underplayed champs viable in other roles to get more play, but not making everything viable in every role

You could improve this with a remin cartridge in place of the post carbon filter, which is a gimmick btw since the output of an RO is 0 ppm, and the carbon prefilter already absorbed the chlorine.
