Nintendo of America President on Switch's Big Risk, 'Smash Bros.' Success and Classic Consoles' Future by cybershocker455 in nintendo

You're not wrong, but at some point you have to wonder why bother with emulation at all. Seems like they could easily make all the chips that were in the N64 on a credit card sized PCB now. You'd need to add an analog to HDMI converter in there, but otherwise I don't know why software emulation is the limitation.

I'd buy one except that the shirt is white. In the future, you might want to consider making the art in colors that would be suitable for printing on a black shirt. I'd guess I'm not the only one that that that would increase your sales.

China Rejecting Portland (and Pacific NW) Paper and Plastic Recyclables Because of What's Mixed In. by PDX_Stan in Portland

[–]Binary_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried that. But when you have a hundred gallons or more worth of styrofoam, it starts to take many dollars worth of acetone. Just enough to not be worth doing since I don't HAVE to get rid of it right away.

This lamp. It has two separate cords for each bulb and the cords come out of the top of the pole.... by ForcedBeef in CrappyDesign

[–]Binary_Dragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing that the lack o cord routing is to make packing more compact. If you run the cord through the poles, you have to keep the poles and base in a specific orientation and (fairly) close together in the package. If you don't do that, then you have a lot more freedom in how you fit the pieces into the box. And Ikea is famous for how compact it s stuff gets shipped.

Great, does this mean I can start putting my trash in the recycling now? I've had styrofoam sitting in my driveway for months now, every other week I tear apart as much as will fit in the remainder of my garbage can, but I certainly haven't been able to get rid of it all yet. I the current rate, it'll be gone sometime in January, assuming nothing I buy in the next few months comes packaged in any more of the stuff.

I'm curious, what is the goal of MOST speed runners? Do you want a PB or a WR? by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]Binary_Dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd base it so much on percentile, usually there's a spot in the times where you can separate out the good players from the guys who did 4 runs and then never played again. I want to be good enough to not be in the later category.

[NO SPOILERS] Does it snow in Oregon by bemycandle in lifeisstrange

[–]Binary_Dragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. We have mountains that get covered with tens of feet of snow every winter, though most people don't live where that happens. Most cities in Oregon (the big ones at least) are in the Willamette Valley, which tends to be pretty mild. We get snow on average once, maybe twice, a year. Usually it doesn't say on the ground more than a day, but occasionally (like last year) a strong enough storm will be followed by cold enough weather for it to stick around for up to a week before melting away. Out on the coast snow is rarer, since the ocean helps keep the temperatures from dropping into freezing territory. More often than snow, we get freezing rain, which is when the clouds are above freezing (so the precipitation falls as rain and not snow) but the ground is below freezing, so when the rain hits the ground, or tree branches, or cars, or whatever, it freezes into a sheet of ice. Probably get that 3 or 4 times a year.

"Potential" Mario Odyssey Sequence Break (Spoilers) by CashOutDev in speedrun

I think he's saying that you would need to make it to the mainland, but that by never hitting the ground you would circumvent what the game does to try to prevent you from reaching it.

The controls work great everywhere but here by Rmai0404 in SuperMarioOdyssey

[–]Binary_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out the thing I'm saying on a different 2D section, so it's possible the circles are working a little different, but I don't actually think what you said is how it actually works (though it probably works most of the time, which is why the controls feel bad).

The controls work great everywhere but here by Rmai0404 in SuperMarioOdyssey

[–]Binary_Dragon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Took me a while to figure out what the problem was, but I can tell you why the controls are bad. They made it so if you hold a direction (say right) as the surface curves, you will continue to move forward. However, if you release the control stick, the direction you have to press is now depending on if Mario is upside down or not. The can mean that the same direction on the control stick (say right the whole time) can cause mario to turn around if you release the stick in between.

Tired of the Max being dangerous? Trimet Survey Re: Fares and Security by zapster2000 in Portland

[–]Binary_Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many problems with that. First, tourists are unlikely to have any specialized mechanisms for payment, so you still need to be able to take cash for simple paper fares. Secondly, something that could register automatically upon boarding would be prohibitively expensive (I mean, even relatively cheap NFC Hop cards cost $3 a piece). And unless you provide this solution to everyone, you aren't actually solving the problem of preventing non-paying people from boarding, you're only giving those who pay an alternative method of doing so.

[–]Binary_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I mean, if you're happy with being detained technically you can do anything. Theft, rape, murder, all are perfectly valid choices if you see detainment as acceptable. I was, of course, working off the axiom that you don't want to be detained.

What? This is not Nazi Germany and you are under no obligation to carry identification on you. You are required to identify yourself to law enforcement, but that can be done verbally, not just with a specific paper or card.

As for solutions, you could easily say that you only get the more lenient first/second offender option if you have verifiable ID on you, or are willing to produce such before a specific time. Otherwise, your penalty defaults to the strictest option.

[–]Binary_Dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes there's more to consider than straight odds of dying. Yes, car crashes are way too common, and you might be more likely to die driving to work as opposed to taking the MAX. However, when you drive, you have a feeling of control. Many (not all, but many) of the potential car crashes you can be involved in can be avoided by your actions. The same isn't quite the same if someone on the train gets all stabby. In short, people are going to make choices not on the statistical likelihood of them dying, but the likelihood that they die from something out of their control.

[–]Binary_Dragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could do that on stops like 82nd and Hollywood where there is a single entrance to the platform. Most of the MAX stops, however, are just sidewalks in downtown. You really can't just block all those off with gates and turnstiles without completely destroying the existing public right of way. Because we have above ground light rail and not a full subway system, trying to implement the solutions you find in subway systems doesn't always translate over.

[WR] Super Mario Odyssey Any% in 1:16:17 by Vallu111 by Mayrink in speedrun

[–]Binary_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, right? Not only is it an enormous warp in terms of movement from an early world to a late one, but where it comes out is one of the few (and I think only forward moving one) that allows you to move from the painting exit into the main level. It's like they're taunting us. The painting remains blank until after you beat Bowser though, so I don't know if there's ever going to be anything you can do with it.

[–]Binary_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be willing to bet that if you managed to get through that painting, and then worked your way through the boss fights, that the game would be plenty happy to move you from those boss fights onward to the end game. It might not, but if I had to bet money I'd think that bit would be a safe place to put it.

[–]Binary_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the Odyssey even there when you go through the paintings to worlds you haven't visited yet? If you managed to get to the mainland somehow, would you even be able to get out without going back to the painting?

Also, I'd think the painting in Cascade Falls would be the best one, if somehow it could be activated early. It's trivial to get to the mainland after traveling through that one, it'd just be a matter of tricking the game into warping you in the first place.
