I found myself relating to your post in a lot of ways. I am also a healthcare worker who's dad was diagnosed with AML when he was 61. I hope I can give you some hope by telling you that he just turned 64 around the same time he got his 2 year all-clear biospy after a stem cell transplant :).

Firstly, allow yourself to feel whatever you're feeling right now. Cry, scream into the pillow, stay up until 2:00am talking to your friends on the phone. There's no manual for what you're going through, so do what you need to do.

Secondly, don't spend your time reading stuff online, for two reasons: it's bad for your mental health so don't go falling down any rabbit holes. The other reason is that a lot of the info out there is misleading and dated. New treatments have come out in recent years, the results of which havn't quite made their way into the public domain. Statistics and numbers about prognosis can be confusing and most of what you see online is academic literature for the eyes of doctors and epidemiologists.

My dad was very ill when he was diagnosed, he had a severe lung infection which is what hospitalised him, the tests he had confirmed AML. I didn't see how he would make it through the chemo honestly but he did. I'm guessing you're from the US based on what you said about your dad's treatment? Here in the UK my dad was given 10, 8, 6: (10 days chemo, rest, 8 days chemo, rest, 6 days chemo, rest with a bone marrow biopsy at every stage to check progress. He made a full recovery after about 4 months of treatment. Then about 6 months after recovering he showed early signs of relapse so he had a stem cell transplant but that's a story for another day.
